What's the worst thing Beane could do?
The worst thing BB could do is abandon the farm system. That starts off with not trading Anderson or Cahill. The A's need to continue investing big in the draft, maintain a solid presence in the international markets, and maintain a solid farm system.
From The Big Lead:
"It’s crazy, but it just might work. Of course, you have to wonder if they’ll ever address an actual need and pursue a shortstop."
Exactly. Jeter needs to be moved off shortstop. A better defense would improve their pitching quality.

If the Yankees have the money, then why not? They made a ridiculously high offer to Sabathia (well-deserved, but highest salary ever). They can make a big offer for Texiera because they need a first-baseman. They can even go after more pitching such as A.J. Burnett or Ben Sheets.
It brings up the question of a strict salary cap in the MLB. Why let them spend all that money where smaller market teams can't even come remotely close?
