Giambi might actually be a decent fit for the Jays. He is not exactly in his prime anymore, but the Jays could use some help in the power department and Giambi obviously knows the AL East pitchers/ballparks.

I think that depends on whether or not Toronto's draft picks are protected as I'm not sure where they finished. If they are its a pretty good fit, otherwise its an expensive signing.

Giambi has shades of Frank Thomas all over it for me. I just don't see their desire to go sign mainly a aging power hitting DH at this point if they already gave up on one really quickly. I realize Giambi can play 1B (and I would LOVE him on my team) but I don't see the fit with Toronto. Maybe I'm wrong.
Penny on the other hand makes a lot of sense for both sides I think.
Giambi is a Type A I assume? Does a Penny signing come without any draft picks given up?

Toronto finished 17th i think, or 18th, but i know for sure that their first round picks are not protected.
Which is why i would rather sign Milton Bradley who's a type B free agent, is a switch hitter and younger then Giambi -- sure he gets injured, but so does Giambi.
I think Penny is only a B free agent so that would be a sweet signing

cubby - i think toronto's motivation to bail on frank thomas was mostly $ driven.. not necessarily performance and lack of patience.
he was due to make like 10MM had he hit a certain number of PA's and he was on pace to do so. the fact that he started slow was a good cover to make the move.
unrelated - someday, someone will explain to me why toronto acquired a lighter hitting, poorer fielding SS when they already had mcdonald.

Omar, please send Delgado back to the Jays in exchange for 2 relievers

"cubby - i think toronto's motivation to bail on frank thomas was mostly $ driven.. not necessarily performance and lack of patience."
But what is Toronto going to pay Giambi? I would think it would be a relative contract to Thomas.

I would love to see Toronto sign Penny. He shouldn't be that expensive coming off an injury, and if he gets healthy, he could be better than the man he's replacing in AJ Burnett.
Not too sure about Giambi, Milton Bradley would probably be a better signing but I could live with either. Now all they have to do is find a trade partner for BJ Ryan which may not be so simple.
I'd love to see the Jays contend next year, but something's telling me their ship has sailed.

Bradley is the way to go for the Jays to fill their DH hole over signing Giambi. He is quite a bit younger and coming off a career year not a declining year as Giambi had. If the Jays can move Overbay and sign both Bradley and Giambi that would be perfect. Short contract for Giambi that won't block Cooper (their 1st rounder that is expected to move up the latter fast) and adds power to a wussy lineup.

Penny on a short contract would be a pretty low risk and high reward situation.
I am not a fan of trying to aquire Greene either. He as horrible with the bat last year. Mcdonald esk numbers but more money. If he can get back to where he was a couple years ago then sweet, but who knows if he will or what was the reasoning behide his pathetic 08. Injuries (we don't need more of those) or lack of effort (we aslo don't need more of those). If you are going to go after a SS go after Tejeda or Young. Both teams need pitching help and bullpen help and we could afford to drop a couple pen arms plus Lind.

Bradley coming off a career, *contract* year. May not be declining, but he isn't exactly healthy. Giambi would only be 2 years anyways, so he wouldn't really block Cooper that much.

Anyone know if Giambi is a Type A or B?
According to the info I have found he isn't which means he can be signed without it costing any team a draft pick.
IF that is the case, then its a relatively low risk move by the Jays.
IF they do have to give up a pick then it makes no sense; but again, according to what I have been able to find (and who knows because this Elias stuff confuses me like crazy) I haven't been able to find Giambi's name on the Type A or B list.

JP Ricciardi needs to be fired, he sucks!
the Jays were in on Jacobs(for whatever reason) but not in on Swisher? someone who is better than Jacobs. explain that, especially consideirng what it took to get both.
Penny is interesting, but i wouldnt offer him much money.
Greene could/should be a better overall hitter out of PETCO

if the Jays can get Giambi for around $10 MIL i think its worth the shot, but i wouldnt want to give him the type of money hes been getting in recent years.
he made $21 MIL in 2008. i wouldnt even come close to that number.
hes on the decline. hes old.. 37/38 in Jan)

I think Giambi is type A though... I'm not saying the Jays have a bad farm system or that giambi wouldn't fit, but wouldn't make sense to get a younger, more talented player if you're giving up draft picks?

I understand what people are saying when they say that the Jays really might be better off in the long run with just keeping the draft picks... But you have to keep in mind that it's possible that Ricciardi isn't looking at the long run. There's a good possibility he won't be with the club beyond 2009 if he doesn't make immediate improvements.

if they do sign Giambi what about beastly Snider
Posted by: Joe | November 13, 2008 at 09:12 PM
As soon as the Blue Jays found out that the Angels were not going to try and re-sign K-Rod as their closer the Blue Jays should have mentioned trading B.J.Ryan and Lyle Overbay for Howie Kendrick and a prospect.
