| Garret Anderson Tries Free Agency »

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic has some good stuff tonight:
- Scott Boras made his pitch for infielder Felipe Lopez, suggesting Lopez "re-established" himself in 169 plate appearances with the Cardinals. He hopes to find Lopez a starting gig and a multiyear deal. Piecoro heard Lopez would love to play for Arizona, but isn't sure if the interest is mutual.
- Adam Dunn does not have a positional preference - he's open to first base or either of the outfield corners. Piecoro's heard Dunn prefers the NL, just like Pat Burrell.
- Piecoro likes the fit with Kelly Johnson for the D'Backs, but isn't sure who they'd send in return.
- If the D'Backs fail to re-sign Randy Johnson, they'll probably look at bargain free agent starters in January. If it's true that the Diamondbacks have just $3-5MM budgeted for Johnson, he's gone.

Max Scherzer.

Lopez was good offensively but it was only 169 PA's....he still made many boneheaded plays on defense which cost the Cardinals a few games.

Agreed. Pay him for his whole season's numbers, hell, pay him for his overall numbers, not that half year that he began steaming.

It's not fair to say RJ's gone if the Snakes are only willing to pay $3-5mil for him. You forget a) how well he's treated by ownership (including the incentives in his former contracts that include courtside season tickets for the Suns, that he loves, amongst many other things), b) the fact that he would MUCH rather play for the Diamondbacks so that he can live at his home in Paradise Valley and just simply drive to the stadium each day. It's an extremely hassle-free situation for him here, and c) the fact that he's not a young guy hitting the market for the first time. He's "gotten paid" multiple times throughout his career, and might not care as much about $3mil extra like younger players would if he can get a reasonable salary in a better situation.

Shrerzer is to much for Johnson. Johnson is a solid ballplayer but isn't great at anything and Shrerzer is.

Scherzer + B-level prospect for Johnson.
I could see the Braves adding pieces, but I could not see a Johnson-to-AZ deal without a guy like Scherzer or Jarrod Parker in it.

What would it take for the Braves to get Conor Jackson?
