Cardinals Working To Sign Trever Miller

FRIDAY, 5:23pm: Negotiations continue between the Cardinals and Miller.

THURSDAY, 5:02pm: Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch talked to Mozeliak, who said Miller's deal has not been finalized.

THURSDAY, 8:42am: Rosenthal says it will be a two-year contract.  Correction to my earlier statement, Miller is not a Type B so the Rays will not get a pick.  Thanks to Mike A. for letting me know.

WEDNESDAY, 11:35pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Cardinals are in "serious discussions" with Miller, and would sign him to a one or two-year deal.

10:45pm: According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals signed lefty reliever Trever Miller (pending a physical).  GM John Mozeliak said southpaw relievers were flying off the shelves, so he acted quickly.  It's a bit of a surprise in that the Cards were said to be targeting Will Ohman and Arthur Rhodes.

Miller, 35, posted a 4.15 ERA in 43.1 innings for the Rays this year.  He held lefties to a .209/.305/.308 line.  Earlier this month, the Rays chose Miller's $400K buyout over a $2MM option.  Miller was a Type B free agent, so the Rays will get a sandwich pick for their loss.

Nice signing. Good fit for the Cards.

Where did you find a comment by Johnny Mo saying "he acted quickly?" I didn't hear anything official yet from the Front Office, just what Bernie posted in his Press Box.

You'd think they could have waited to avoid giving up the draft pick. But whatever, I'm not the GM.

The good thing I see from Miller is his HR stat... Giving up only 2 in 43IP, not bad. His WHIP and ERA might be a touch high, but as a situation man he could be pretty good. The stats are a bit off from above, his line for LH is actually: .209/.302/.308. He has declined ever since the 06 season with the Stros though......

Ian Ostlund might be a bit of good news for the Cards future as he was just signed to a Minor League contract after leaving Detroit. He posted a 2.45 ERA with 77Ks and only 17BBs, not bad, not bad at all. They also added a minor league SS to the 40-man roster, the kid has a touch of pop in the bat so should be interesting to see what he could become (although he hasn't posted the best batting averages...).

Re: Ian Ostlund.

Yeah that's great news for the Cards future. He is a 30 year old career minor leaguer.

They did not give up a draft pick to sign him. He is a type "B" free agent. The Type B's only get a sandwich pick (between 1st/2nd Rounds) for their former teams...the signing team gives up nothing.

If i'm a cards fan, I don't like this. They need more bullpen help and he's not one of the top guys. I'd rather have had Ohman or better yet Beimel. This to me is taking the cheap way out, who knows maybe because they need more than one.

After watching Miller all last year he should never face a right handed batter unless it is mop up work, but he's a good teammate and from that area (Kentucky) so not a bad signing, but nothing major.

i dont think they are done signing lefties...at least i hope they arent done. TLR likes two lefties in the pen. this is one of them. the birds still need another. with 43.1 IP in 68 appearances last year, miller isnt going to be the 'go to lefty.' i think the cards will continue to talk to ohman and beimel.

cards not done yet. i think they will still get Ohman & maybe Rhodes.

I don't remember seeing anywhere that the Rays offered Miller arbitration, in which case they wouldn't get the sandwich pick. Can anyone confirm that he was offered arbitration?

i dont think it is necessary that they offer arbitration before he signs, only that they offer arbitration before dec 1. i believe the rays can just file some paperwork and get the pick.

Miller is not a Type B FA, USAToday.com has the complete Elias ranking.

Raysrule07, Type A and B FAs that sign with another team before arbitration deadline (Dec. 7) will always net their former team a pick.

"Yeah that's great news for the Cards future. He is a 30 year old career minor leaguer."

Because clearly there have never been those type of players to make impacts.

The guy had great AAA #'s last year, I think it's an outstanding minor league signing. The guy's career minor league numbers are pretty great as well. I think he could be a good option for St. Louis.

correction; dmb60614 is right, dec. 1 is arbitration deadline, dec.7 is deadline for accepting arbitration

I think it is a decent signing as long as they get someone else as well (Beimel, Rhodes, Ohman). They might have signed Miller to try and save money since they need to upgrade at other several positions.

Shouldn't he have signed after he took the physical? Unless they saw something they didn't like when he took the physical?

Since when is Miller a hot commodity?

Good God. How hard is it to sign Trever freakin' Miller! All this Negotiations stuff is probably a way for the Cards to say they tried when the deal falls through.
