« Braves Moving On From Peavy | Main | Yanks Make Offer To Sabathia »
5:06pm: MLB.com's Matthew Leach says a team source was "somewhat nonplussed" by the report of the Lopez offer, and Lopez says he has not been informed of anything.
Leach says mutual interest is clear with Edgar Renteria, but the Cardinals were not among the ten teams to have expressed interest in Rafael Furcal.
2:32pm: According to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have already made an offer to free agent infielder Felipe Lopez. Lopez, a Scott Boras client, is said to desire a multiyear contract on the strength of this year's resurgent 169 plate appearances with the Cards.
Keith Law's thoughts on Lopez: "He's not a .385 hitter and probably isn't even a .300 hitter, but as a guy who could easily hit .280/.350/.400 and play a capable second base, he's one of the best infield options on this market." However, Law notes that Lopez's effort level has been questioned often.

Lopez? Tell me they aren't serious.

It's not hard to phone it in when you play for the Reds and the Nats.
Posted by: A Washington Tragedy | November 14, 2008 at 02:37 PM
I really think the Cards should try to sign Orlando Hudson. He'd be pop in the lineup that would allow them to trade Rick Ankiel (sp).

Good for the Mets. Less competition for O-Dawg.
Posted by: sampsonite168 | November 14, 2008 at 02:42 PM
How in the world can he easily hit .280/.350/.400? He's done that once in eight years and just barely.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 14, 2008 at 02:46 PM
There's a big bout of stupid running through the NL Central this offseason.
Posted by: Teetz | November 14, 2008 at 02:47 PM
Does "capable second base" mean well below average now?

"How in the world can he easily hit .280/.350/.400?"
When Scott Boras decrees it and thus people have to believe it. Behold, for this is the word of Scott Boras.

SWP....like I said before...everytime Boras speaks, a puppy dies.
Posted by: Cardsfan387 | November 14, 2008 at 02:53 PM
The Cards need a SS too so maybe he'll play there and they'll find someone else foe 2b.

"everytime Boras speaks, a puppy dies."
Dude, you just made my day.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | November 14, 2008 at 02:55 PM
I think I could live with Lopez in the Middle Infield if he wasn't such a horrible defender.
Lopez reminds me a lot of Jeff Weaver circa 2006. We appreciate the good but short time we had together. But we still remember when we pulled you out of the garbage heap. So don't think we aren't going to pay you like Trash + 1 now.

...Except that Keith Law said it, not Boras. Keith Law is a pretty intelligent guy.

This would put the Cards at the top of the NLC.
--I think it would be a better idea for the Cards go to after an impact player.
Posted by: cubs land | November 14, 2008 at 03:06 PM
Apparently not. There is nothing in any of Lopez statistics to suggest he's capable of that line at all.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 14, 2008 at 03:13 PM
(in reference to Keith Law)
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 14, 2008 at 03:13 PM
Who? Sorry, I've never heard of this guy. There was a Felipe Lopez who I went to middle school with.. another one on my second grade soccer team. I think there's one who lives a couple houses down from me.
I've never heard of this guy, and usually if a guy is one of the best on the market, chances are I would have.

as a cub fan i welcome this development wholeheartedly. the secret to motivating someone who might have questionable effort is to give them guaranteed millions over multiple years.
"everytime Boras speaks, a puppy dies."
that is good stuff.

The NL central is becoming less and less impressive by the day
Posted by: Aduncaroo | November 14, 2008 at 03:35 PM
@cubbyfan23
lopez has the talent to do what law suggests. its just a matter of properly applying those talents. as law notes, motivation has been a particular problem for lopez. i dont know that "easily" is the best term, but i wouldnt be shocked at all if he hit .280/.350/.400.
i get the impression the cards are offering one year at a bench player's salary. that is reasonable gamble, imo.
Posted by: dmb60614 | November 14, 2008 at 03:40 PM
We made the guy a offer that doesnt mean we signed him and hey cubs fan that said something 100 years buddy dont question us
Posted by: southpaw | November 14, 2008 at 03:52 PM
Why in the world would you trade Ankiel for a SP when you can just turn him back into one and save yourself the headache?????
Posted by: CY33 | November 14, 2008 at 03:52 PM
The (sp) after Ankiel means I wasn't sure if his name was the correct spelling, not trading him for a starter.
Posted by: jlowrance | November 14, 2008 at 04:00 PM
What's the point? Lopez isn't good enough defensively to play SS everyday, and Aaron Miles is a slightly better and more affordable option at 2B. Middle infield is an issue for St. Louis, but Lopez definitely is not the solution. There are much better players available through trade and free agency to address that area of need.
Posted by: Coxy75 | November 14, 2008 at 04:01 PM
I think Keith Law is trying to point out that Lopez is entirely capable of that hitting line, but he's not suggesting that Lopez will achieve it necessarily. In other words he's got the talent to do it but not the will or desire to.
Posted by: pageian | November 14, 2008 at 04:03 PM
I'm liking this new report, I hope it's true and the Cards haven't offered Lopez a contract.
Posted by: Cardsfan387 | November 14, 2008 at 05:27 PM
What do the Cardinals want for Kennedy? I could see the Mets trying to trade for him to shore up second base.
Posted by: tinski | November 14, 2008 at 05:34 PM
I think you're right, dmb. Lopez was used as a bit of a rover last year, appearing in left field as well as second base. As a bench guy, he's acceptable, as a full-time second baseman, slightly less so, as a full time shortstop, ee-gads NO!.
Tinski, I bet the Cards would take Schoenweiss for Kennedy.
Posted by: Devlsh | November 14, 2008 at 05:45 PM
I thought Lopez would be a perfect fit for the mighty Cards! He's worth a chance shot at least, I know he's no David Eckstein, but come on, who is?

Free Agent David Eckstein might qualify.

i thought a couple days ago the cards werent even interested in lopez. interesting.
Posted by: twoseamer | November 15, 2008 at 01:36 AM
I hope that this is not true at all and that the braves can renew the Kelly Johnson and change for ryan Ludwick talks. The cards get their young controllable top of the order left hander who has premium offense for the position he plays. The Braves get their controllable power hitter in left to provide some balanace to the line-up. The cards could then go out and sign renteria and have their problems up the middle become a lot less stressful. I could see, however, the cards wanting to move ankiel a lot more than ludwick though, since ankiel is eligible for only one more year and Boras is his agent. The braves really do not need another left handed hitter, so I definately FW and JM at least talking over the weekend to perhaps see if something could be done.
Posted by: bravesbeast | November 15, 2008 at 05:42 AM
Kelly Johnson for Ryan Ludwick would be a massive loss for the Cards. The braves would have to offer something else besides Kelly Johnson for that trade. I can see them trading Rick Ankiel for Kelly Johnson, but not Ludwick.
Posted by: DrNo990 | November 15, 2008 at 09:22 AM
"Kelly Johnson for Ryan Ludwick would be a massive loss for the Cards. "
Huh? No. Kelly Johnson is under control for 3 years, as is Ludwick. There are fewer middle infielders with good sticks than there are corner outfielders who can hit.
That deal is dead even.

Felipe Lopez is one of the main reasons WHY the Nationals have stunk for the past few years. Bad defense, bad feelings, bad attitude. Clubhouse presence toxic. Check out D.C.'s win streak the moment he got released and replaced with a dude from AAA...

the cards front office is a joke we fill the seats every game every year and they continue to not go after big time players we are suppose to 30 million to spend plus trade kennedy and piniero and thats another ten million off the books we need furcal hudson burnett and fuentes thats about 35 million a year we deserve it
Posted by: dfresh | November 15, 2008 at 05:10 PM
I would love to see Renteria back in a Cardinals uniform, and I like Miles for second base.
