« Pirates Rumors: Wilson, Paulino, Byrd | Main | Japanese Links »
George King of the New York Post swapped emails with Dodgers GM Ned Colletti, who admitted to "some" interest in free agent southpaw Andy Pettitte. Ken Rosenthal originally reported the Dodgers possibility on Tuesday, and on Wednesday Ken Davidoff talked to a team official who considered a deal unlikely.
With Pettitte considering the Dodgers, King says the Yanks have a dilemma regarding the decision to offer him arbitration. River Ave. Blues runs through the scenarios. In a recent poll of over 2,700 MLBTR readers, 39.1% expected the Yanks to offer Pettitte arbitration.

The Dpdgers are in need of pitching, i like the idea of picking Andy over Randy, because he seems to have more left in the tank, may cost more, but it could be worth it.
Get a big name starter on top of that would be great to!

Yankees would be crazy not to offer arbitration for Pettitte, at least if he walks they get a pick for him.
Johnson AND Pettitte would look good on the Dodgers... they need 2 starters. and what about all their other holes???

How many pitchers do the Dodgers need, anyway? They lost Penny and Lowe to FA, I highly doubt Maddux will come back, and Billingsley is hurt. I count 4 spots (although Billingsley shouldn't miss too much time, so I guess we can make that 3 spots). Kershaw will probably be given a full-time starter spot in the rotation, but who else? McDonald might be better in a relief role for this year, Elbert has regressed, and who knows when Shmidt can return?
I say, if you lose that Sabathia sweepstake, they should go for both Andy and Randy.

Oh, right, I forgot Kuroda.
Well, that leaves 2 spots then.

no way the Dodgers give up draft picks to get Pettitte. Even with the holes in the rotation, ok the rotation is currently one HUGE gaping chasm, he is simply not a difference maker. Just not worth losing a 1st round pic and a sandwich pick...though as we all know with baseball, when a guy is drafted only matters to how big his signing bonus will be not if he would ever make it to the majors.
All-in-all Pettitte is just not worth the cost.

They need to get one of those 3 lefties, and some leadership. Would be great to get Maddux back somewhere even if he isnt pitching. Dont know why the Dodgers avoid keeping players who have played well over the past few years (Lowe, Penny, Furcal, etc) bring somebody back

dodgers need a big pickup of a 3rd basemen too...any ideas?
Posted by: dodgers4lyfe | November 28, 2008 at 02:50 PM
or do the dodgers try to sign lets say orlando hudson for 2nd base and move dewitt back to 3rd base?? or why not give up a bloated outfield contract somehow for a 3rd basemen?
Posted by: dodgers4lyfe | November 28, 2008 at 02:58 PM
Only way the dodgers sign pettite if the yanks dont offer him arbitration and he comes cheap. Don't see neither of those happening.

i think the dodgers will give him the cash...Colletti has show he will give money away (i.e andruw jones) and i think he will get rid of one of his bloated contracts somehow this offseason

Probably just semantics, but you don't "lose" a sandwich pick. You lose your first round pick, and the player's former team gets an additional sandwich pick as compensation.

I don't think any teams have bad 3B contracts who would be better off with a horrible OF on a 1 year deal.
Orlando Hudson for 2B might be interesting.

1) Lowe stated he did not want to come back to the Dodgers, and really wanted to return to the East Coast. Plus his cost and years he wanted were not in Colletti's budget plans or team plans.
2)Penny has been injured almost as much as he was healthy. Plus he was kind of a cancer in the clubhouse. He wasn't a Jeff Kent, but he definitely isn't a clubhouse guy.
3) I agree with you on Furcal though. I think the Dodgers are making a grave mistake in not re-signing him given the upside he has. But the fact that his injury this last year, and his persisting back issues are cause for concern, especially if he is asking for a 4 year deal.

Regardless, the Dodgers need Andruw Jones out of there. He is doing nothing for them, getting anything in return would be an acomplishment. Maybe they could pick up a bad SS contract since they seem unwilling to resign Furcal. The McCourts can spend tons of money on meaningless things, ticket prices increase, and yet they still havent even thought of making a splash this year.

Loney
Hudson
Hu
DeWitt
That would equal the least powerful infield in baseball...
Maybe 40 HRs from the entire infield...
Posted by: MikeClarke | November 28, 2008 at 05:32 PM
But if they get Manny, and he has the kinda full year he had in a half a season, he hits 40 of his own. Kemp + Ethier throw in another 30, they would survive. But then they need to get some starting pitching, which means getting CC! or even Ben Sheets and one of the 2 aging lefties to help strengthen the rotation
Posted by: dodgers4lyfe | November 28, 2008 at 05:40 PM
True, but based on the McCourt's recent comments...
I do not believe for one second that Manny will be back...
Posted by: MikeClarke | November 28, 2008 at 06:35 PM
haha 40 homeruns that would be impressive.
yeah manny dictates the whole offseason for the dodgers. if he is resigned then the lineup is going to score runs.
if kemp can take some more walks he will be a great lead off hitter.
and sheets would look good, i wouldnt ever bank on him pitching 220 innings, but 170-180 and a 3.00 era would look nice
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | November 28, 2008 at 10:36 PM
and they need to sign a relief arm.. like bad
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | November 28, 2008 at 10:43 PM
honestly i would rather have andy leave so that we can have better pitcher take his spot casue frankly his best years a behind him and i think he is washed up
