« Jake Peavy Rumors: Monday | Main | Giants-Renteria Rumor False »
5:54pm: The D'Backs offered Vazquez a one-year deal with a club option for 2010, according to his agent. Vazquez has a better offer from another club, and awaits a counteroffer from Arizona. He wants a multiyear deal.
10:20am: Jack Magruder of the East Valley Tribune says the D'Backs offered a one-year contract to Vazquez, but he seeks a multiyear deal.
10:08am: According to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert, the Diamondbacks have talked to the representatives for free agent infielders Damion Easley and Mark Loretta recently. They've already offered a contract to Ramon Vazquez; Easley or Loretta could form a platoon with him.
Easley hit .297/.366/.459 against lefties the past three seasons, while Loretta batted .300/.383/.424. Easley earned $950K last year. Loretta accepted the Astros' arbitration offer but lost his case and was paid $2.75MM.
Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says Arizona's conservative offseason agenda could leave them little margin for error in 2009.

As long as they don't spend more than $4-6M on second base, then they seem to be doing a good job of filling the hole.
A platoon of Vazquez and Loretta/Easley would cheaply give them a very good OBP and a little pop as well. Vazquez would give them some nice versatility as well.
I really feel like at this point, Vazquez should be getting more attention than he is. The difference between him and Hudson really isn't that much. With Hudson's decline on defense, he's really a near equal to Vazquez in the field, and their bats play similarly as well. Vazquez will likely get like 1/4 or 2/8, while Hudson should land 4/40 or something. I don't get that.

Vazquez's career splits against lefties are abysmal, rendering him a platoon player at best. Hudson will be declining in the near future, but he is MUCH MORE than a platoon player.

The difference between Hudson and Vazquez is that Hudson has a much longer positive track record at the plate, while being a year younger. Also, there is nothing to suggest that this year's decline in +/- wasn't a momentary blip for Hudson, who was still dominant with the glove as late as 2007. There really is no comparison between the two. The only real advantage Vazquez has is that he plays more positions.

I wasn't necessarily comparing the two so much as I was saying that Ramon Vazquez could end up providing some really good value for someone, while Hudson may very well end up getting overpaid.

Always wondered why Mark Loretta took so long to get signed in the off season as a FA the last few seasons. he does not require that much since he left Boston with the 3-4m million dollar contract several seasons ago and has been getting in the 1-2 million per year range for couple seasons now. A excellent deal for a guy who can backup every infield position, play LF and RF in a pinch and hit pretty well to boot.
