Debunking Angels Rumors

MLB.com's Lyle Spencer shoots down three recent Angels rumors, based on his talks with "an informed baseball source."  Spencer says the Halos are not interested in free agents Randy Johnson or Trevor Hoffman, nor are they talking to the Rockies about Garrett Atkins.

The Angels were never linked too seriously to the Big Unit, though I thought it was a good match.  Hoffman's agent mentioned the Angels as a "potential interested party."  Both Rockies beat writers, Tracy Ringolsby and Troy Renck, have linked the Angels to Atkins recently.

Busy day Tim?

GOOD!

i am SO relieved that they're not going after Atkins.

If they don't sign Tex, the Angels will be interested in Atkins.

THANK GOODNESS.

Actually, Johnson is very interesting. I would be steamed if Hoffman or Atkins were pursued.

ariel777 -

based on what was said in the article, i doubt it. if they don't sign Teixeira, i think they go after Adam Dunn. Whether he plays 1B or LF, i don't know. but i do think they'll make a pitch at him.

agree with nrmax88. This bodes well for the Mets.

I am in the minority on the site. I do value a good closer. I love Shields and Arrendondo but neither is proven that they can save 90% of their opportunities. It will be interesting. In addition to the obvious 2 mentioned above they have other arms that might end up closing.

Bulger - AAA (43IP / 0.63ERA / 75K's) was solid - but old. Jepsen is the real deal. You also have Kelvim Escobar coming back. He might take the closer role while Arredondo is further groomed.

Finally, I do hope that if K-Rod's price does come down that both K-Rod and the Angels take a fresh look at the situation. A 4/50 deal would be reasonable for all parties.

Typepad sucks ...

Actually, I would like to see them give Atkins a chance. It would cost (at the most) Weaver, but would probably end up being Adenhart and another prospect. The guy knows how to hit... Hes not a fluke and just hits only at Coors (although his stats do insist that). For him I think its more of a mental thing where he feels very comfortable at home, especially in Coors. Who knows, he may turn in around and be the same in Angels Stadium. He does know how to hit... I mean he was a good hitter at UCLA and obviously got drafted for a reason, so I would give him a chance.

Wrong Wrong Wrong.

If the Angels dont get Tex, they will play Morales at 1b and try to make a trade for Magglio Ordonez, he fits their contact model much better than Dunn.

I agree with BK... Morales is there to play 1B or LF which they tried him at. Atkins isn't need in the infield as they already have Top prospect Brandon Wood who can play SS or 3B with Figgy, Aybar, Kendrick, Rodriguez fighting for the infield. Plus, Atkins D isn't all that great and we all know the Angels covet the D.

"If the Angels dont get Tex, they will play Morales at 1b and try to make a trade for Magglio Ordonez, he fits their contact model much better than Dunn."

Dunn also doesn't fit the organization's "walks are evil" mentality.

I'd rather have Dunn than Maggs if the price is 2 or 3 prospects + his entire contract. That's way too much to pay when Dunn will come in a few million less per year + not costing good prospects.

For anybody talking about Francisco Rodriguez.. it's been reported that the Angels have tried to come to terms with his agent, blue printing 6, I repeat SIX different contracts to try to sign him reporting back to last offseason. Tony Reagins is just about done with negotiations with him, and he will most likely not resign unless he drastically lowers his asking price, and the Angels do not run out of money with the signings of players such as Teixeira and CC Sabathia.

If they don't resign Tex, I really do not think there is a move that fits them, and I do not believe they will make one unless someone becomes available via trade. Adam Dunn is not a possibility, he will not fit into the Angels play style and they do not need an excess outfielder/DH player.

Look at who they have, and anyone who follows the Angels will agree with me on this. Should the Angels lose Teixeira, they would rather resign Garrett Anderson or Juan Rivera and play Kendry Morales at first. It would leave them with an outfield with Guerrero, Hunter, Matthews Jr, Anderson/Rivera, and Willits. The Angels have a tendency not to make big moves, and I don't believe they'll panic if Teixeira leaves. They will turn their attention to CC Sabathia and play Morales at first. I do believe Morales will projected out to be a .280 hitter with 20-25 HR next year.

Unrelated note. Saw Jered Weaver dropping of some dry cleaning today. Maybe I should have gunned my car?(not serious)

Why is Adam Dunn not a viable option?

He is a terrible fielder but he can DH when Vlad is in RF and play LF/1B when Vlad needs to rest.

They don't need speed or brilliant baserunning from their bopper. If you watch Tex, he is hardly the epitome of a prototypical Angel hitter. However, his power and OBP more than outweighed his ability to run the bases.

bjsguess You're wrong though, Teixeira IS a perfect fit as an Angel hitter. Not only does he provide great power and OBP, but he does many other things the Angels value: Tex works the count deep in almost all his at bats, being the 3 hitter, working the count is just a luxury for the Angels. He isn't afraid to take his fair share of walks, along with his patience at the plate he always has a great approach at the plate and will take a walk (as we saw many times in the playoffs ahead of Vlad). His speed also isn't as bad as Dunn. Scoiscia was able to put him in motion on pitches, and he had no problem going 1st to 3rd, where as Dunn would be a HUGE liability to put in motion on the pitch and would not suceed going 1st to 3rd on an average armed outfielder.

Not trying to call you out, just trying to give a view point many people might not see.

The Dodgers should consider Johnson. He'd be a cheaper and effective alternative to a Sabathia, if they can't nab him, or even Oliver Perez.

spencer ... come on now. You praise Tex over Dunn on (1) great power (2) great OBP (3) working the count (4) taking a walk and (5) baserunning.

Here are all 5 categories for you:

1. Great power - HR's
Dunn = 40
Tex = 33

2. OBP
Dunn = 386 (career avg = 381)
Tex = 410 (career avg = 378)

3. Working the count - Pitches seen per plate appearance:
Dunn = 4.3 p/pa
Tex = 4.0 p/pa

4. Taking a walk - BB's:
Dunn = 122
Tex = 97

5. Baserunning: neither is good but here are their career SB totals:
Dunn = 59/19 (career)
Tex = 13/3 (career)

On all but ONE category, Dunn was superior to Tex. Now, I fully acknowledge that Tex has a better glove and would be the safer signing. I just don't see as big of a gap between the two players as you do. They are both monster middle of the order hitters. They both clog up the base paths. They both would add immediate offense to the lineup. If the choice is 7/140 for Tex vs 4/65 for Dunn I would really lean toward Dunn.

Note, I didn't say Johnson was a more effective starter than Sabathia, but that he will be much cheaper. I can see people jumping on that part of my comment.

Those numbers are close, but I'd rather have Tex at the plate with the bases loaded.

bjsguess. I'll sit down on the pitches/pa, I don't watch Adam Dunn as much as I do Teixeira and I did not realize that he works the count just as well.

As far as walks, I truely believe their walk numbers would be closer together if Texeira went to the NL or if Dunn came to the AL. Dunn gets pitched around alot, especially with one less bat in the lineup in the NL.

Another thing I forgot to mention was the strikeout rate. In the Angels system, strikeouts would kill rallys with the Angels, especially with their low power number lineup. But, Dunn could spark some rallys with his home run power. Dunn had 162 K's this year to Teixeira's 93 K's. That is one of my main concerns.

At the same time if you want to look at a long term contract, we all know Teixeira is the overall better player. And I believe that guys like Dunn who hit for high power, low average, high K rate will fade off quicker than Teixeira. I can see Tex getting old and still hitting for a high average somewhat like Todd Helton. With Adam Dunn, I just see him hitting 32 or 33 and going downhill from there, turning into a Jim Thome.
