According to Buster Olney, Jim Edmonds intends on playing in 2009. His agent, Paul Cohen, told Olney that Edmonds is "definitely coming back."
Edmonds hit .256/.369/.568 for the Cubs this year after struggling with the Padres. He'll meet with Cohen to discuss his plans in the next few days. Lou Pinella has said that he plans on platooning Reed Johnson with Kosuke Fukudome in center field in 2009.
About a month ago, Edmonds was considering retirement, but Cohen says his client is ready to play again in 2009.

I'd like to see Edmonds convert to RF. His instincts and arm are still there, but he doesn't have enough left in his legs for regular duty in CF. Remember too that he is a very adept 1B and could serve as insurance/strong righty platoon there for Lee.

Can EDMONDS comingback with CUBS next year? I don't think he can that do that he did last year.

Hopefully he just retires.

Not enough in his legs? Did you see when he did the Willie Mays up the hill in Houston? Or when he just full out dove to get Samardzija's first win? He might be getting older and lost a step or two but can still make plays in CF. Oh and also Edmonds would not play 1B for someone has not played their before.

Hopefully someone kicks you in the face for saying that.

Bring edmonds back, let go of Ward. That way you can Hoffpauir and Edmonds as the lefty off the bench.

If he doesn't sign back with the Cubs and if teams don't want him in the field then he could serve as a DH.

Im sure edmonds can find something better than sitting on the cubs bench. His defense isnt what it was, and just because he makes a diving play doesnt mean his legs are fine, thats a ball jim catches on his feet 5 years ago. Anyway i think you have to let Pie get a shot before you bring edmonds back, but with kosuke in CF now i guess Pie is gone.

Atlanta?

Edmonds will be back somewhere next year. He probably won't get a starting gig, but not because he can't play the position anymore, but because teams will opt for youth rather than a stopgap. I think Edmonds role will be that of a bench/platoon player. Given that role he could wind up back in Chicago.
A Johnson/Edmonds platoon in CF and K-Fuk/D-Ro platoon in RF is a real possibility, even given Lou's comments about K-Fuk platooning with Johnson in CF. That plan requires them to bring in a RF, unless they plan on playing D-Ro in RF fulltime and Fontenot/Free-agent at 2b.

If the Brewers don't bring Cameron back a Kapler/Edmonds platoon would probably be pretty productive and they sure could use another LH bat.

Moving Fukudome to center doesn't mean that Pie is gone. It means that Pie is going to have to work his butt off to get a spot in the starting lineup. He's out of options so unless he has a terrible spring and winter, he's going to be on the big league roster and he's gonna play. They can use a quick runner to steal some bases and play an excellent center at the end of games.

I like the Atlanta idea. It would give the seasoned leadership that Kotsay supplied with more of a power threat. We all know they need that. I say trade for Magglio, sign Edmonds and hope that Francour continues to show the signs of coming out that he did in the last few week s of the season

I really think that Cincinnati is a good fit for Edmonds. The Reds are an up-and-coming team that could surprise in the next couple years. They need veteran leadership on the field and have question marks in the outfield. He doesn't have as much ground to cover there on defense and the small park will benefit his hitting style greatly. There is also the Jocketty connection and Dusty Baker's perceived loyalty to veteran players.

It's silly to think the Cubs would entertain signing a guy like Raul Ibanez when they could have Edmonds on a smaller, cheaper contract and get more production. I will say that Edmonds would thrive most in a home stadium with a short porch in left. He can no longer pull the ball with authority, but he raked on those low and outside fastballs. I'd still like to see the Cubs re-up with him on a one year deal+1 year option, but with Fukudome's contract, it seems unlikely.
