« Cafardo's Latest: Lugo For Dontrelle? | Main | Odds and Ends: Mussina, Proefrock, Cuban »
On Friday evening, MLB.com's Chris Haft revealed that the Giants have "sincere" interest in free agent lefty Joe Beimel. Beimel, 32 in April, is probably in line for a three-year, $12MM deal. Remarkably, he allowed just one home run (to Carlos Beltran) over 116.3 innings the last two seasons. Beimel has also been linked to the Cardinals, Rockies, and Mets.
Giants GM Brian Sabean has reportedly expressed varying degrees of interest in many other free agents, including Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake, Bob Howry, Juan Cruz, Manny Ramirez, Mark Teixeira, and C.C. Sabathia.

It would be really nice for the giants to pick up some good guys. However our year to shine is 2010. We'll have Bumgardner, Alderson, Posey, Pucetas.
NO CC

Beimel would be a nice addition once I get over the fact that he was a dodger..

So out of those guys who is most likely to get the most regretable contract?
Who ever it is. That will be the one the Giants sign. My bet would be CC.

Most regrettable contract? CC? Definitely not from the Giants. Maybe the Yankees, but they do that kind of stuff all the time (see Pavano, Carl; Brown, Kevin).
I would say Manny at 4 years would be the one who'll likely get the most regrettable contract.

Beimal would be a solid pick up for the G-men.

Whoa, according to SI.com, 16 year old girl has been drafted by a Japanese professional team. Apparently she throws a side-arm knuckleball.

Brown did not sign that contract with the Yankees - he signed it with the Dodgers and was traded.

Last time I check the Yankees didn't sign K. Brown. Every team makes bad signings.

Stlredbirds -
Right. Thanks for correcting my mistake. And I'm not saying that it's just the Yankees that make bad signings. Every team has. Why, just last year, Kansas signed Jose Guillen to a $12 million contract ($36 million over 3 years or something like that).
I was just saying, with the Yanks unlimited payroll, sometimes they tend to overpay for certain players, more than most teams.

Manny Rameriz even on a one year deal, he'd quit on them just like he did with the Red Sox. Imagine an unmotivated Manny in the middle of august, he'd make the fans wish they had Bonds out there.

Beimel would be a solid pickup for anyone and as a lefthander he's probably in demand. His price I would guesstimate would be similar to Damaso Marte. Others will also be interested. He just doesn't give up runs.
As long as the Mets don't get him I'll be happy.

Beimel has been linked to the Mets, and I think if they can shop Show/Heilman they will sign Beimel.

Beimel, Furcal, Blake, Manny... are the Giants interested in everyone who played for the Dodgers last year? You gotta wonder if they actually have interest in these players or if they're just trying to drive the cost up for the Dodgers to resign any that they really want (like Furcal and Manny). I think it's more so the latter.

Giants interest in Manny, CC, and Tex is more of touching base with their agents. I doubt any serious offer will be made.
Beimel and Furcal interest is understandable.
Blake - Just kicking tires...Giants have Pablo Sandoval who is much more valuable at this point in their careers.

Bob Howry?? If ya'll want to win i wouldnt get him. He was HORRIBLE with the Cubs last year. He was a pitcher he threw corner to corner about 93-95 mph. Last year he threw 88-91 mph, down the middle of the plate, and his ERA showed that.

and which IDIOT GM will accept that garbage???

lol @ furcal, injury prone for the last 2 seasons. Perfect for the Giants.
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | November 17, 2008 at 12:26 PM
furcal is worth the injury risk for the giants at this point. Sign Furcal and Beimel, trade for Beltre and pick up his (reasonable)salary-12mil so he doesnt cost much as far as prosepcts. And trade for another solid reliever (or sign another one), and unload Winn's contract. Don't deal starting pitching. That will up payroll by about 25 million I would assume which puts them in line with where they normally are and doesnt cripple them for the future. Plus Beltre will provide some draft picks at seasons end. Bam.
LF Lewis
SS Furcal
1B Sandoval
3B Beltre
C Molina
CF Rowand
RF Shierholz
SS Burris
Lincecum
Cain
Sanchez
Lowry
Zito
when needed: Pucetas or cheap SP free agent
If Furcal does happen to get hurt just move burris back to short and let Frandsen take second. Realistically he wont go down for the whole season again though. Also, beltre lets Sandoval just worry about first base and hitting, while the left side of the infield is above average. As long as the bullpen is shored up the bench would also be decent and they win the west. and watch beltre return to form in his contract year out west in the NL. Any idea about what the M's realistically would demand in a trade for Beltre though? I'm sure they wouldn't mind Winn they need OF help

SFg49w, that's a horrible lineup still. I can't see how these moves make the Giants even a .500 team.
Posted by: O's in '13 | November 17, 2008 at 01:02 PM
O's in '13,
I agree. (love the name BTW). That lineup will be lucky to score 600 runs. They'll need their insanely good pitching staff. Looks like a lot more 3-2 games.
Oh and congrats to Mr Pujols on winning his 2nd MVP. Very deserving.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 17, 2008 at 01:10 PM
Pujols wins MVP with a hurt elbow? Impressive.
I think adding Beltre and Furcal improves the team, although I agree, they still probably won't win the West.
As for acquiring Beltre, I think all it would take are prospects. A mix of pitching prospects and hitting prospects. Enough prospects to make the Mariners forget about the 2 draft picks they would get after this season.

i really am so unsure in what direction i want the giants to go....we really have a good system now and prospects comming up...i kind of want texiera but that will block either anvil or pablo eventually....i love sanchez but if there was anyway for us to trade him to nag either davis from the rangers or preferably hardy from the brewers i would jump all over that....we can be very competative next year because of the weak NL west but i still want 1 more year of the young players....we need to give schierholtz a chance to start
Posted by: SF in 2010 | November 17, 2008 at 01:36 PM
obviously the lineup i put up isnt some amazing offense. but i still think its the best offensive lineup they can put on the field next year without compromising the future of the team. Furcal is definitely buy low right now with upside, and the giants have nothing coming up in the system at shortstop so there is no reason for them not to swoop him up. and i would be willing to give up some solid prospects for beltre because there is a good chance he comes out type A so we would get the picks back. but this offense, combined with not having to alter the pitching staff by losing one (which i really dont think they can afford to even tade sanchez right now) gives the giants a good shot to win the west and does not really deplete the system

Would the Giants still be interested in Beimel now that they signed Jeremy Affeldt?
