« Reds Hope To Add Lefty Reliever | Main | Hot Stove Chat »
According to Chris Haft of MLB.com, the Giants are seriously interested in signing Orlando Hudson.
The Giants have already signed Jeremy Affeldt and Haft says their big off-season plans could also include C.C. Sabathia, Edgar Renteria, Rafael Furcal and Juan Cruz.
Kevin Frandsen, who's played mostly at second base, could play third if the Giants obtain Hudson.
The Indians, Mets, Yankees and Dodgers all seem interested in Hudson too.

Hudson is not the right fit for the Giants. This is the exact player they claim they are avoiding: aging veteran on the downswing of their career. Hudson's best years are behind him.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hudson is not worth a draft pick to the Giants organization.
The Giants have more depth throughout their organization at 2B then anywhere else in the infield

Could someone explain to me why we would be interested in Hudson? I honestly don't know anything about him, so I looked at his stats. Doesn't hit for power, doesn't steal bases....what exactly is his value? I would rather see them try Frandsen out instead....

Please, oh please let Haft be wrong again

Orlando Hudson is Aaron Rowand Part Deux.

Brian Sabean likes veteran grit
Posted by: melonis rex | November 21, 2008 at 12:14 AM
This is a typical Sabean move, he's trying to surround his star with a supporting cast...this time he forgot the star.
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | November 21, 2008 at 12:17 AM
His only value is tied into the fact that he bats around .300 and has a "reputation" for strong defense. However, he is 30 years old and aging fast. The Rowand comp is perfect in that he is better known for his name than his future production.

As much as I would love for the Giants to get CC, I have to admit that it doesn't make sense. We already have a solid starting rotation, (sort of reminds me of Atlanta at the beginning of their run!) We need a bullpen and offense!!! If we did that, we win the division, then who knows? Lately, it hasn't been the best team winning the Series, it has been the hottest...
Posted by: jay k. | November 21, 2008 at 12:19 AM
Frandsen needs to be given a full season to see what he can do at second base. An expensive stop-gap player in a non-contending year is clearly not the way to go.
but as we Giants fan know far to well... Sabean tends to see things differently

Furcal works alright partially because of the unranked status and at least he gets on base and steals a little. Hudson isn't a leadoff hitter, can't run, and is a type A! So what, a new strategy of building from within lasts 2 drafts and 16 month? He's going to blow the second and third round picks on Hudson and Cruz, a 2B that isn't what our need is and a middle reliever? Sabean better go get another Type A then thats worth his status to us, like Texeria. I know, he's not on the radar but is what they need.
Someday I'll have to learn, what he Giants need to do and what they are going to do never work. Who would have ever thought The right thing to do would be the right thing!

CC Sabathia: Cy Young winning lefty with Connections to the Bay Area.
"This is a typical Sabean move, he's trying to surround his star with a supporting cast...this time he forgot the star."
Lincecum!!!
Too bad the offense still sucks.

Can Frandsen play shortstop?
If so, the other team across the Bay could use him.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 21, 2008 at 12:33 AM
since Sabean probably won't play him.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 21, 2008 at 12:33 AM
Tim, can I curse on this site because that may be the only way to express my true feelings on this.
NO TO HUDSON, NO TO CABRERA, NO TO RENTERIA. Now, if one is not offered arbitration and wants a short contract, come ask us again in mid December
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | November 21, 2008 at 12:33 AM
How does this sound for a lineup?
Furcal SS
Burriss 2B
Lewis LF
Dunn? (Fielder?) 1B
Rowand CF
Winn RF
Sandoval 3B
Molina C
You would have 3 table setters with speed up top, (plus I think Lewis would excel at # 3) then power in the 4 spot. Rowand would do well # 5. Then rounding off with Winn, Sandoval, and Molina. I could live with this!
Posted by: jay k. | November 21, 2008 at 12:39 AM
Yeah. Go after Hudson. Leave Furcal to Oakland.
Posted by: green_and_gold | November 21, 2008 at 12:44 AM
I am a HUGE Giants fan, and like all of you I am weary on the signings of players like renteria, furcal, and hudson because they are aging risks with limited power.
BUT THEN WHO DO WE SIGN?
I know it's fun to bash sabes but hes got to sign/trade for some hitters and i'm sorry but I would rather have hudson then frandsen at second or burris at second and furcal at short.
In a perfect world David Wright would just hop over to the bay because he loves SF so much, but that's not going to happen...so instead of all of you saying what we shouldn't do, WHAT SHOULD WE DO (GIVE ME PLAYER NAMES NOT JUST GENERALITIES LIKE POWER HITTING INFIELDER...WE ALL KNOW THAT!)
Posted by: Leland11 | November 21, 2008 at 12:47 AM
"Yeah. Go after Hudson. Leave Furcal to Oakland."
Not on a 4 year deal. The Giants can have him for that.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 21, 2008 at 01:16 AM
Leland11: If you're signing a guy like Dunn for 1B, that's one thing. Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder (do NOT trade Cain for Prince straight up though), Mark Teixeira (I know, expensive), Jason Giambi, etc. Guys who, you know, actually hit for power.
Hudson isn't even a power hitter. He isn't even that great a defender.
If the Giants are going to sign/trade for bats, trade for power bats, not more Aaron Rowand types.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 21, 2008 at 01:19 AM
Giants are like a crappier version of the Yankees. But instead of paying stupid contracts for a whole team, they do it in bits and pieces.
Posted by: juiced | November 21, 2008 at 01:42 AM
Who do we sign?
It's not necessarily a sign as much as it's a trade or develop thing. Obviously, it takes two to tango so we have to find an agreeable team. We also can't just sign everyone without taking into account their ranked status.
Furcal for instance is unranked, so we wouldn't lose the draft pick. Hudson is a type A, we lose our 2nd round pick.
As for what we should do:
First-Try to trade for Ryan Zimmerman. He may be available for a steep price but has a few years of arbitration left, I think 3, and would anchor 3B, our weakest positional spot in the organization. (Conor Gillespie needs a few years before he should even be considered)(he would also probably cost Matt Cain)
If Zimmerman can not be had, try for a trade of JJ Hardy, without dealing Matt Cain, Yunel Escobar, without trading Cain, or sign Furcal.
Sign CC Sabathia. After this year, the giants will have incredible depth at starting pitching if the have Sabathia, Lincecum, Zito. They will have another year to get Sanchez experience, and Cain will be at his peak Value. Trading Matt Cain should be avoided this year if possible. A trade of Matt Cain should be withheld unless the Giants are getting a middle of the order type back.
I do agree, signing Juan Cruz is the right move, I just don't like losing a 2nd round pick for him. If they sign CC or Tex (not going to happen), it makes the Cruz pick a little easier to swallow.
The Giants need to move Winn, (what you can get in return is debatable, but possibly a solid to good offensive 3B or 1B entering his walk year, possibly a future type A, like Beltre) free up RF for Shierholtz this year. He may not be the awnser in the end, but deserves an everyday shot and is low cost. Next year, Carl Crawford is a free agent and is the perfect hitter for PacBell park.
the Giants should really be setting themselves up for 2010, and hoping the new guys play well enough to get into the postseason in a weak NL west.
Burriss deserves the chance at either SS or 2B. He gets knocked for his power but everyone forgets he was a single A ballplayer starting last year with barely 1 year of minor league experience. He is going to grow in some pop. I'm not saying he's going to hit 20 home runs, he may never hit 10, but it's too early to tell. He will grow into enough power to start hitting the gaps for 2B and triples. He has 30+ SB ability now if given the entire year, and he has a canon.
Molina needs to be around unless they are given a knockout offer. Possibly trade him mid season if we are falling apart, possibly extend him another 2 years if need be. They may want to Fast track Buster Posey, but not everyone is Tim Lincecum. It is very likely he won't be up until 2011 and Molina can be dealt later on. Sandoval can also catch between molina and Posey.
Give Sandoval the shot at 1B 3B depending on which move above is made and let Ishi challenge.
Frandsen should be given every chance to win a job, but we can't count on him yet. He deserves it, and can fill in at 3B or 2B. The giants have Eugenio Velez still in the wings for 2B but he may not work out. They also have Nick Noonan low in the minors so a few years from now, maybe he'll take over.
Bottom line is, the Giants don't need another aging veteran at a position they can fill internally. Hudson may be an offensive upgrade, but not much, and not at a position of need.
Next year, Roberts, Winn, Molina, Lowry are off the books.

sorry, I should have put some spaces between the lines up there

"Hudson is not the right fit for the Giants. This is the exact player they claim they are avoiding: aging veteran on the downswing of their career. Hudson's best years are behind him."
Agreed, but at 5/50, Hudson is not the right fit for any team.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 21, 2008 at 02:12 AM
I actually agree with most of the Giants fans in here which is scary. Hudson is not the answer. They need to be willing to trade some of their surplus (starting pitching) for what they need. CC is not the answer. And before I said that Burnett would be the biggest FA mistake someone will make. I take that back. If someone gives Hudson 5 for 50 then that's the biggest mistake. That's like Utley money. More than Rollins makes (realizing they play different positions in the middle infield. BIG MISTAKE.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 21, 2008 at 06:20 AM
jimmie, I did the math, even with those guys coming off the books and assuming CC, Cruz, and Crawford sign, and with contract raises and arbitration, you're looking at a payroll north of 120M.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | November 21, 2008 at 07:28 AM
Before I read the article, I thought the headline meant the Giants were trying to put back the A's rotation from 2002. Damn.
Posted by: worldcupfever | November 21, 2008 at 08:30 AM
Either way, the Giants need to sign someone.
First priority for the Giants should be 1-2 power bats since they have zero power in the line up.
Second should be a defensive oriented shortstop and Furcal would be wasted money IMO. I would aim for a cheaper option like Everett, Uribe or maybe Lopez.
Spend money getting power then figure everything else out.

Adam Everett? Have the Giants learned nothing from Omar Vizquel?
You guys need bats. Defense is great, but Furcal is a need on that team along with a big power bat.
I say go land Dunn, ink Furcal, entertain Giambi if he's wanting to come back to the Bay, call it an offseason. If Giambi can play 1B for 120 games a year, a Phelps/Giambi platoon would be amazing. The defensive stats I was checking out last night had Giambi pegged at about -10 RS/season so I'm not sure if that's viable at all though.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 21, 2008 at 09:20 AM
If Giambi plays 1 bag then where will Dunn play? I hope youre not seriously trying to tell me that Dunn could play left field in San Fran because if its one thing that they NEED in that ball park it is mobile and above average defense in the outfield.
Dunn and Furcal are great ideas though but theyd be better off finding a big bat for 1st base and potentially a good contact/power guy like Abreu for the outfield before paying out huge coin for a SS.

ARE YOU SERIOUSS!!??!!
Could you be more vague...O wait you were successful in naming quite possibly the worst options at shortshop available, do you really think thats who the giants should sign?
And for all you people saying Adam Dunn is the answer: He bats .220 hits like 40 dongs which would be reduced at AT&T and has horrible defense in left...and we want to put him at first base? He is simply not the answer.
Jimmie: I think your post was very thoughtful and good, as it outlined two very good options: Cruz to solidify our pen' and Zimmerman as a possibility to our third base hole.
I like the crawford fit somewhere down the road, but Giambi?? Comon guys.
I think as of now CC would be the best option because although hes packin some major pounds he's a straight stud, loves the NL, loves to hit, would give us tons of flexibilty in trading other starters (cain, sanchez), and would pay for himself by brining the whole town of vallejo to every Giants home game selling out the hot dogs their hot dogs like crack in hunters point.

I would like to see a 3 way trade with Atlanta, and San Diego. We all know Atlanta and SD are the only match for Peavy but SD needs some kick before they deal so why not... ATL- Get Peavy, SF- Get Escobar, and SD- Get a package of talent from SD and SF.
Posted by: JaCoby Shaddix | November 21, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Xethicx & leland: We sign no one for longer then 2 years that is not clearly above league average and going to stay there for 3+ years. He also has to be position we don’t have viable in house options for. Singing a guy just to do something is a big part of how this team is still in the condition its in. Next winter has a free agent class should better suited to our needs. It gives us time to sort though the young infielders we have and gives some of the young arms in the minors a chance to get a track record in the upper minors That helps us by possibly give the team starters to count on in the 4-7 spots (and if they do well in the upper minors ) other teams to be more interesting in acquiring these guys.
Phils Champs: The GMen are probably at least half season away form being near to having a starting pitching surplus. thats if 2-3 guys tare things up right out of that gates. They need to show they can handle the upper minors a bit first. Right now we are in a gap were we might not kick out even a bottom of a the rotation starter for a few months or over a year.
Posted by: daveinexile | November 21, 2008 at 01:10 PM
daveinexile,
IF i was a giants fan what I'd want them to do is make sure Sanchez was in the rotation and hope he starts off strong in April/May and then possibly move him at the deadline for an impact bat. That's what i specifically meant.
