Nice move by the Giants today, as they signed first baseman Josh Phelps to a minor league deal with a spring training invite. Phelps, 30, hit .291/.373/.568 with 31 home runs in Triple A this year. He has an .815 OPS in his big league career, and could provide decent pop for the league minimum if given the opportunity.

The Giants need offense from multiple positions.
Phelps platooning with someone at 1B could be ideal, with Sandoval moved to 3B (can he play 3B?).
Good move by Sabes.

Sounds like a good fir for both sides.
Phelps needs an opportunity to play and the Giants are rebuilding and have the opportunity to take a gamble at a player with the only risk is the MLB minimum salary.

Shocked the Mariners or A's didn't jump all over this. Nice for the Giants though.

Not a bad start for Sabes
