Hoffman Comments

ESPN's Buster Olney spoke to free agent reliever Trevor Hoffman, who felt blindsided by the sudden end of his Padres career.  He tells his side of the story, and says the Padres are "spinning lies to do damage control."

A couple options for Hoffman: the Indians and Tigers.  Hoffman has never pitched for an American League team, however.

It'll be a shame if the Padres and Hoffman split badly. Hes the face of the franchise, no one wants to see this.

Hoffman hasn't pitched for a whole lot of National League teams either.

I feel really bad for the Padres fans...no wonder Peavy wants to get out of town...

Ha, Padres are such a joke. Can't trade Peavy, now they screw over Hoff

Good guys never win

How bout the Mets? I'd love for them to look at shorter term options like Wood and Hoffman.

Red Sox Dynasty:
Please show me what month Manny quit on his team in.
April: 178 OPS+
May: 94 OPS+
June: 147 OPS+
July: 179 OPS+
I don't see it. He had a bad May but Ortiz sucked all year and you are not accusing him of quitting. Btw, a dynasty the Sox are not.

I think they're implying that Manny is a selfish pr_ck and only cares about Manny. He tries his best when it best suits him which is too bad. there are too many of those types of people out there.

"How bout the Mets? I'd love for them to look at shorter term options like Wood and Hoffman."

I think they should and will. KRod may be in Mets blue next year but he certainly won't be the only addition to that pen. Adding either Wood or Hoffman would add some serious depth.

Both Wood and Hoffman will close not set up KRod. Hoffman might get 5-6 mil for a yr with a second yr option but Wood might convince someone to give him 3yrs/27-30 mil. Question is will either make successful jump to AL? If Astros can ship out Valverde they will make a run at Wood - I think Hoffman ends up with angels or brewers ( brewers will have interest in Wood as well )

Very different than the way the Cubs split with Wood. Really makes you wonder why the Padres handled it this way with Hoffman. My guess is that they're parting with him simply to save salary, maybe related to the Moores divorce, and they didn't want it to look like that. They probably wanted him to either take the low ball offer or just go quietly to another team. Still, someone screwed up with the way they pulled the offer and told him they don't want him back over the phone. Seems like an Alderson type thing to me. Maybe Towers is to blame because he's spending so much time working on dumping Peavy. Moore obviously isn't any help right now either. Just a big cluster-f*ck right now in SD it seems.

I love how every thread here turns into what's good for the interests of the Yankees, Mets, Cubs, and RedSox fans. Not!
As if, I mean kudos to all of you elite fans, you are passionate and dedicated, and life revolves around your team, but keep in mind, there are 26 other teams in MLB baseball as well, and we tire of your selfish biases. I hope the Washington Nationals win the WS next year, so all the sanctimonious elite can hang your heads in pity and ignorance.

As far as Hoff goes, hey I'm a Tiger fan, but I hope he goes to the Indians. That's a Tigers rival. I prefer balance and competition in baseball, not four all star teams and 26 AAA teams.

Why has no one mentioned the Brewers? Now that Torres has retired and they have no real in-house option, why wouldn’t they be mentioned in the same breath as the Tigers, Indians, Mets etc. They have a team that should contend, Hoffman would hands down be their closer and he stays in the NL.

Why not retire? Closers are so overrated and Hoffman was the first of the current crop that only pitches one inning. I'll take a Gossage, Fingers, Sutter over him any day.

Ty-Grrrrr, greatest comment ever! :)

FB365: I totally see him going to the Brewers. Wish he'd go to SF and be an 8th inning -- wish the Giants would overpay him to do that -- but it ain't gonna happen. Hoffman and Wilson have the same agent, and Hoffman apparently wants to pad his save total.

by the way, Manny quit on his team when he needed some time off in a pivotal august series against the yankees, and he could not make it because his knee hurt....

When asked which knee he needed an MRI on he said and I quote "the right one, or this one well I have some pain in the knee" (the ole forgetful pain)

Stick with your own team

So let me get this straight. I am an elite, biased, selfish, sanctimonious fan if I suggest that an available free agent who would fill a need for my favorite team sign with my favorite team, but I'm a good fan if I prefer that my favorite team not fill it's need, and that the free agent instead signs with a division rival. Okeydokey.

Taking the emotional part out of it, the Pads are right to let him go. He's 41 years old and the skills are starting to slip. His ERA last year was a full run higher than his career average. He gave up 8 homers in just 45 IP, which is pretty dreadful for a closer. He had just 34 Save Opportunities last year, and considering the state of that team he probably won't get too many above that in 2009. So why pay $5m for 30 saves to a guy with slipping skills when you can get the same 30 saves out of Heath Bell for 20% of that amount?

Emotionally it's a bear, I agree. And it sounds like the Pads should have just been honest about it, like Hendry was with Wood. But in fact it's a good baseball decision and a good economic decision.

Where will he end up? I too think the Brewers are a good fit. The Mets would be a great one year solution; remember, they still have to pay Billy Wags the $10.5m on his contract. Insurance is NOT going to cover it and I can't believe any team would be stupid enough to pay $25m in one year for their closer (K-Rod at $15m and Wags at $10m). And he might look good in a Cards uniform if he'll take one year and agree to tutor Chris Perez.

Final prediction? Brewers, one year at $5.5m plus incentives.

Stupid Padres. They're gonna be a debacle in 2009.

Hoffman needs to chill. The team loves him and the fans in San Diego (though there may be few of them) love him. This isn't anything personal I didn't think the Pads would even offer him that last contract. It is not a secret that the Padres are in complete rebuilding mode. Why is he taking such offense to this? Lets see bring back an antique of a closer who isn't good anymore or see what you have with your youth. Mostly all franchise players wind up playing their last few years on a different team....why is Hoffman so different?

yewnork, don't be an idiot. and same for you tygyr. A Tigers fan rooting for the nationals to win it all next year? You are stupid; go put your head back in the sand and SHUT UP! Thats more embarassing than being a bandwagon fan. If you want parity go watch the NFL. Talk about quitting on your team.

Which brings me to yewnork: I guess you had your head in the sand right next to Jeopardy contestant #1. You missed where he rolled around and ONTO the ball in the OF, where he took three down the pipe in NY, where he didnt leave his own dugout in the brawl with Tampa and later faught Youkilis who had taken offence, and you missed where he said he was prepared to sit out the season if he didnt get traded. Oh, and the "knee injury" he sat out games for? He looked just fine sprinting around the bases for the dodgers in October, when fatigue is most felt. Maybe it was just the adrenaline kicking in (or the thought of a huge payday).

"I'll take 'Quitting' for $200 Alex."

Wow. Way to make a Hoffman story about Manny guys...

Have you ever been to SD? It's not like ze're the Marlins. We may not have the fan base NY has, but this is devastating for a lot of people.

Hoffman may not be the closer he once was, I think his career speak for itself. He's still an above-average closer today at 41. He doesn't have the greatest stuff anymore (even though his changeup is still probably a top 5 changeup in the game today), but he still intimidates hitters like few closers can. Bottom line, his save ratio is still good, and in the end that's what matters. I can definitely name several pitchers closing games today that would be inferior choices to Trevor.

Saying SD is right to do this is wrong, because firstly they can't afford to pay a guy to match his production, and secondly because he's an icon in SD. They're disrespecting him when he's been nothing but great on and off the field for the Padres.

I hoipe vthat wherever he lands, he can find a good gig for him, and a welcoming fan base. If you've never experienced Hell's Bells, it's something to look forward to. I've seen Gagne come out at Dodger stadium during his Cy Young campaign, and that was nothing compared to the day Trevor came out against the Pirates for save 479. Best baseball memory ever.

If he were willing to be the 8th inning guy, pretty much every team in baseball would want to sign him. He simply isn't a good closer anymore.

"As far as Hoff goes, hey I'm a Tiger fan, but I hope he goes to the Indians. That's a Tigers rival. I prefer balance and competition in baseball, not four all star teams and 26 AAA teams. "

Man aren't you just a better person. You wish free agents would sign with your competition while normal fans imagine what a particular player could do on their team.

"Selfish biases"

You are a clown.

Love this site...simple discusions go off on the most bizarre tangents. Hoffman string goes off on to "did Manny quit on the BoSox".

It was time for the Pads to move on from Trevor. They are in complete rebuilding mode, and cutting the salary makes sense. However, it was done in the most classless way possible.

Sandy Alderson has proven that he is totally unconcerned with fan perception or public relations. Kevin Towers is made the mouthpiece for the classless maneuvers, and hence he looks bad also. The Padres PR gaffs in the last three weeks are amazing!

As a Pads fan, thanks to Trevor for so many great years, am sorry to see you go the way you did, and wish you the best of luck down the road.

Now, why don't we argue about if my dad can kick your dads ass...
