« Marlins Rumors: Max Ramirez, Pavano, Rhodes | Main | Brown's Latest: Teixeira, Crede, Friedman »
According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Indians GM Mark Shapiro is considering all options for the team's closer job.
No free agents have been ruled out, even expensive closers like Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes. The Indians' #15 pick is protected, if they go that route. Shapiro admitted to interest in Trevor Hoffman and Kerry Wood, if they are not retained by their old teams. If the Indians can't find a closer, they may add a late inning reliever to put in front of Jensen Lewis and Rafael Perez anyway.
On the trade front, the Indians have Huston Street on the radar. Kevin Gregg could be another consideration.

Matt Capps? The Huntington - Shapiro connection should be noted.

Capps would be a good idea.
I have a better idea. Give the job to Jensen Lewis.
Then, fix the rest of the bullpen using some low key signings/trades.

How about a trade with the Blue Jays? Some deal involving BJ Ryan and Jhonny Peralta?

Agreed on giving Jensen Lewis a go. Shapiro is smart enough not to overpay for bullpen help.

I would stay away from Huston Street as the Athletics seem to want to much for him.

They're actually probably selling low on him. They will target middle infield help though

I agree on adding a guy in front of Lewis and Perez.....but NOT making Lewis the closer. Perez has much better stuff and should be the closer. Wedge hinted at this last year even, but said he couldn't make Perez the closer as he was the only lefty in the pen.
Adding a guy like Brian Shouse or Affeldt would allow them to move Perez to the closers role. He has the ability to come in with men on base one inning, get out of it, and come in to start the next inning. I'd love to see him do this in the 8th-9th innings, ala Rivera and Papelbon.
Another guy to watch out for in the Tribe pen is Jon Meloan, whom we got for Blake. He's got the stuff to be a solid closer and could have the job by the All-Star break if no one is added.
Juan Cruz is another interesting option. If no true closer is added we may be able to get him to come here with some extra dough and the knowledge that he could become a closer here.

so anyone think Astros get Shoppach and prospects for Wiggington and Valverde? then and it is a stretch.trade for peavy and have blum and loretta and castillo platoon at 3rd? where does that leave Houston with a closer though?

Why would the Astros give up on JR Towles so quickly? that would seem to be filling an area you already have filled while depleting 3B and the Closer spots.
