« Mets Revamping The Bullpen | Main | Astros Sign Hawkins »
1:47pm: This Scott Miller column is from yesterday, but it has some good info. Miller's source believes the Braves are the frontrunners for Peavy and are willing to include Gorkys Hernandez. Additionally, the source said the Cubs are very aggressive and the Dodgers are making a strong pitch.
12:53pm: Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald says Samardzija is not on the table and has a full, not partial, no-trade. Additionally, the Cubs have not thrown Fontenot into the mix. Miles gives a 50-50 chance of the Cubs getting Peavy.
9:39am: GM Kevin Towers expects to trade Jake Peavy before the winter meetings, saying, "The train's kind of left the station." Continuing the metaphor, Barry Axelrod said, "The only thing we've got is a brake."
According to Yahoo's Jeff Passan, the Cubs have moved in front of the Braves in the battle for Peavy. Passan says the Padres want Jeff Samardzija (who has a limited no-trade clause), and the Cubs could also include players such as Felix Pie, Sean Marshall, Ronny Cedeno, Kevin Hart, and Donald Veal. Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times suggests Rich Harden or Mike Fontenot could be involved. De Luca notes that a Peavy trade would probably prevent the Cubs from acquiring Brian Roberts. ESPN's Buster Olney believes Josh Vitters would have to be involved, while the Daily Herald's Bruce Miles adds Jose Ceda, Welington Castillo, and Mitch Atkins as possibilities. Miles does not see the Cubs as a player for C.C. Sabathia, by the way.
The Padres would prefer a deal with Atlanta, but can't pry Tommy Hanson loose. The Braves are willing to trade Yunel Escobar, Charlie Morton, and Jordan Schafer.
Meanwhile, Tom Krasovic at the San Diego Union-Tribune says Peavy and Barry Axelrod are concerned about the Braves' shortstop situation if they are to include the defensively-talented Escobar. Perhaps the Braves could sway them by outlining some contingency plans at the position.

AirmanSD - Kulbacki does not project as a RF (especially at petco)and as Hunter has grown he has projected more as a RF than a CF. The Pads really lack a true CF prospect.

Chipperowns- I agree on Marshall and Morton. Maybe Marshall has a slight edge, slight. Gorkys and Pie are similar players. The difference is Escobar. Cedeno isn't close. And unless the Cubs throw in Vitters, I can't imagine their proposal being taken over the Braves. I also think the Braves are offering a fourth lesser prospect. That could mean Jeff Locke....or it could mean Kris Medlen.

Do you guys ever read Keith Law's stuff?
He is shocked the Padres aren't in on Flowers, as they don't have a catching prospect near his potential.
Also, the Padres CF prospects aren't as good as Schafer or Hernandez.
And apparently the Pads don't like Schafer, so I am pretty sure that is why you are hearing Hernandez.

"1-Peavy 2-Zambrano 3-Lilly 4- Harden ? Harden"
You have Harden as #4 & #5. The Cubs are hoping for 25 starts out of Harden. Quit overloading the man's pitch count. ;)

NEBravesfan33 - Mitch Canham who should be in AA next projects to be the Padres C of the future and they have nick hundley as a stop gap at the moment...While Flowers projects to be a better player than both of them the Padres are really weak in other spots in their farm system (ie CF, SP and SS) so they are not looking at flowers because he would fill a hole that is already plugged while the rest of the ship sinks.

Truthfully I'm surprised and pretty much irritated that we are not asking for Flowers and Rohrbough as mandatory parts of the Escobar deal. If we can't get Hanson then that is fine and I totally understand it but why the hell is KT not going after Heyward. I'm sure Braves fans won't want to hear this but you can only have so many untouchables. If it's Hanson so be it, we should be asking for Heyward then. I know we are trying to get step in right now players but there is serious value to be had by targeting a few of the Braves lower level guys. With the likes of Heyward, Teheran, Rohrbough, Locke, Hernandez, Flowers, Freeman and Hicks there is definite value to be had in the system it's just not exactly ready to step in.

Frank Wren can have as many untouchables as he chooses. Just like Towers can keep Peavy.Heyward will not be traded nor will Teheran. If Towers is holding out for those guys he might as well go ahead and take the pile of crap the cubs are offering.
By the way I call it a pile of crap assuming Samarjizia isn't park of the package.

Steve - You may be right. If that is the case then, what are the Padres waiting for?
Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton and a lesser prospect(I am going to guess one of Locke, Medlen, Marek).
I am sure the Padres would want a better SP package. But Hanson, Teheran aren't going anywhere. And I have a feeling that if Rohrbough was apart of this, we would of heard his name. Locke could be. And if he is, the Padres should jump all over it. The Cubs aren't beating that package.

I read somewhere a few days ago, that Hanson, Heyward, Teheran, Rohrbough, and Freeman are the untouchables. I don't remember where it was.

Whose the Padres 2B for next year?
Posted by: BLEEDINGCUBBIEBLUE | November 08, 2008 at 09:02 AM
"Whose the Padres 2B for next year?"
I would say most likely Edgar Gonzalez, since he was mostly the starter last season.
Posted by: BravesRed | November 08, 2008 at 09:25 AM
That was a mistake, I didnt mean to have Harden as #4 and#5 starter DAAAAAA! The Cubs should include anybody it takes to get Peavy. I would take a bag of Doritos for Cedeno he sucks!! I hope they give Fontenot a shot at second base. I also hope they resign Woody, he would remain as the closer, and the 8th goes to Marmol, and the 7th to Shark, or Gaudin. I do believe we need another lefty in the pen, im not a big fan of Cotts.

I think if Vitters or Samardzija are not in the trade, than Cubs would have to trade probably half of their farm system to get Peavy. If Cedeno, Hill, Pie, Veal, Hart, and Marshall were enough, the trade would of been done.
If Escobar/Gorkys or Schafer/Morton were enough to trade for Peavy, than this trade would of happened, unless Wren is willing to throw in another pitching prospect, don't count on this trade happening.
Watch, the Dodgers, Cardinals, or Astros are going to come from under the Braves and Cubs, and take Peavy.
You can agree with me or not, I don't care, i'm only stating facts.
Posted by: BravesRed | November 08, 2008 at 09:52 AM
KRS1 - Peavy's no trade clause and the Pads pushing to trade him has made it so the KT has little leverage with the braves since the cubs and astros have little to offer.
BLEEDINGCUBBIEBLUE - Edgar Gonzalez (all bat no glove), Travis Denker and Matt Antonelli (who the Padres think will be thier 2B of the future) will all battle for the job in ST. The pads prob wont be looking for another 2B.
