« Kevin Gregg Trade Reactions | Main | Ibanez May Be Too Pricey For Royals »
According to Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star, the Blue Jays have a four-year, $54MM offer ready for A.J. Burnett. They'll apparently leave that proposal out there, let Burnett shop it around, and wait until the situation is resolved before moving on to other free agent pitchers. Surely Burnett can top $13.5MM a year.
Griffin says Ryan Dempster (Canadian!) and Derek Lowe could be targets if Burnett signs elsewhere, assuming they are still on the market. Jeff Blair wrote yesterday that Brad Penny is also on the radar.

If Burnett doesnt sign, the jays will have to pick up someone. Id be ok with Lowe or Dempster but theyd need another guy to replace Marcum for the year. Maybe Garland?
Halladay, McGowan, Litsch, Burnett OR free agent and then who? Purcey has potential but he hasnt earned a rotation spot.
If they could retain Burnett I would be ok with Purcey but if not, then they should grab Lowe or Dempster and a type B starter like Garland.

I could see other teams offering around 60/4. Specially the Yanks.

I think Burnett is in line for more than 4/60. Doesn't it just make too much sense? 5/80 seems like the perfect rate to overpay.

4 years of Burnett sounds like a bad idea.

Anybody have any thoughts on Pedro? Might be a decent flier at a decent price. Already pitched in AL East and if healthy (yes I know "if") he still throws the ball well. I'd rather take the risk on Pedro and a Garland than hit up Burnett, Dempster, Lowe for too much money and too long of term.

"I think Burnett is in line for more than 4/60. Doesn't it just make too much sense? 5/80 seems like the perfect rate to overpay."
Burnett's payday will very likely be closer to 5/80 than 4/60. He's probably the second highest upside pitcher available (you could make an argument for Sheets) and his stuff is simply a joke when he's on.
Some team is going to pay him more for what he's capable of doing, rather than what's actually done and should be expected to do.
I actually do like the Pedro Martinez idea though if the Blue Jays can get some more dependable innings from someone else. He could end up being a pretty high upside/low risk acquisition for a team like Toronto, and he's talented enough to figure out a way to get out hitters. I'd rather have Pedro than Penny, but I wouldn't be opposed to giving either guy a shot.

i wouldnt go much higher $$ wise on Burnett. if he takes that offer then great.. but if he doesnt then forget the other free agent SP, they arnt worth the money they will get. i dont think Burnett has any interest in coming back to Toronto anyway, but ofcorse hes not going to admit that because he wants the Jays in there bidding to drive up his price.
the Jays dont NEED to spend that much money on a free agent just to fill out the rotation for 2009.
if the Jays cant sign Burnett, they can wait until late in the offseason to see what pitchers are left, and then sign them cheap to give them a chance. wasnt it just last offseason Lohse couldnt find an offer he liked before taking one year with St.Louis?
if the Jays want to remotely contend in 2009 the best move might be to trade for SP instead of overpaying for the likes of Dempster and Lowe. Dempster is a mess waiting to happen, and Lowe's numbers wernt that impressive away from Dodgers Stadium.

i doubt the Yankees will sign Burnett. Theyre fixated on Sabathia and theyll make him an offer that he cant refuse and no one will be able to beat but it also wont leave them with enough to sign another A type FA pitcher. Theyll likely go with Sabathia and a B type guy.
Boras is likely to want FAT cash for Lowe and I dont think the Jays are willing to dole out huge coin for Lowe, I could see them going Dempster over Lowe.
I could also see the Jays just going with 2 cheaper guys and then spending money on signing a DH like Giambi. I could see the jays taking stabs at Pedro, Garland, Prior, Garcia.
Remember Ben Sheets is also out there as well and might command a little less than Lowe or Dempster.
I just hope the Jays get some pitching, a power hitter and a shortstop, although I would be ok with Scutaro at short for the year.

What's the deal with Bedard? Has he been non-tendered by the Mariners? If not, the Jays should go for him. He probably won't cost too much, as he had a terrible year, and other than 2007, he hasn't been that great. But he did show he can play in the AL East, plus he's also Canadian, so maybe there is something there.
I don't like the idea of Dempster being signed, as he's not an AL-type pitcher. He's going to be serving a lot of hits and homers pitching in the AL East.
I think a Giambi signing would be interesting, as he has pretty decent OBP, and he obviously has the power. But I think he could end up back in Oakland.
I like the Pedro Martinez idea, as he was dominant the last time he played in the AL East. But you need to remember that he's a few years older, and it's not like he did anything in his 4 years at New York, other than that first year in '05. He's pretty risky.
Definitely no on Garland. I'm sure Yankee and BoSox fans would be salivating from the thought of having to hit against Garland whenever he faces them.
I like the Mark Prior idea, but I think he would rather stay in the West Coast than come to the East Coast. Plus, I think the Padres will elect to keep him, as he won't cost them much.
I think they should look into Sheets. Brad Arnsberg is one of the best pitching coaches in the league, and maybe he can find a way to keep him healthy for a whole year. Sheets is ace material, and his price should have dropped after his elbow injury at the end of the season.

I agree, Sheets should be an option, even if they re-sign Burnett heh could you imagine a rotation with Halladay, Burnett and Sheets? lol not likely but one can dream hah.
If I was Ricciardi here's what I would try to do.
Needs:
A level starter: Sheets or Lowe
(if burnet doesnt re-sign)
B level starter: Penny (if the price is right), Garcia, Pedro or Prior
DH: If funds are available Giambi or Burrell, if not then maybe Sexson being that his price is way down.
Bench players to look at: Kotsay, Nick Punto, Willy Bloomquist, Ramon Vazquez or other players will utility skills.
A lot of people seem to think the Jays are going to be shopping for a shortstop and in my opinion, they could spend the money elsewhere and trust the spot to Scutaro full time. But if they are able to trade for Greene and the asking price isnt high, Id take it. Free agent wise, they wont get Furcal or Cabrera and there's no one else on the list that would be an upgrade over Scutaro so why bother? Oh if only Johnny Mac didnt hit like a pitcher.
Trading Overbay would be nice and then move Lind to 1st and put Snider in left or viseversa. Thatd work and Im sure there's more than one team thatd be willing to trade for Overbay if they knew he'd extend.

He would laugh at a 4/60 offer. That's not even close to enough to make him leave Toronto.
I really hope the Yankees don't sign Burnett, because it would cost the Jays a first round pick which is likely to go to a higher ranked FA.

Looking at their offensive needs, how about Juan Rivera? He's a good hitter, and this would allow Lind and Snider to split time at DH, or give Snider another year of seasoning in AAA. Also, this would improve their defense, as Rivera is a better defensive player than Lind or Snider.
This could also allow them to go ahead and trade Overbay to another team looking for a 1B (Orioles? Giants? Indians? Mariners?), and keep Snider in the majors.
