« Moyer Wants To Stay With Phillies | Main | Yankees Rumors: Teixeira, Manny, Mussina »
According to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times, Ken Griffey Jr. is open to returning to the Mariners as a free agent. Griffey’s agent, Brian Goldberg, said that his client is “open minded” about returning to play in Seattle, where he played for 11 seasons.
Goldberg added that Griffey wants to talk with the White Sox about returning to play in Chicago. The White Sox declined Griffey's $16MM option this week.
Griffey, who hit .249/.353/.424 last year, has said that he wants to play for three more seasons.

Aren't the Mariners trying to cut down on payroll?
Griffey is probably the best Mariner of all time, but this wouldn't make much sense at all, since they are rebuilding.
It would be nice to see him back, but he's not the answer. But it'd also at least bring a couple hundred or thousand to the games.

But Griffey is the only partner to comment so ... it's on the Mariners.

His defense is so bad at this point that I can't imagine offering him more than $4M or so and that would mostly be to bring more fans into the park because of his name.

Ken Griffey JR doesnt need to play the OF all that much ... he can simply DH and get some fielding time in at 1B...

We aren't going to compete with our without him. I say bring him back if it can be done cheap. His OBP is still better than any current Mariner, and that sweet left-handed swing can still do some damage in a park that favors the lefty. I'd go to as many games as possible if we brought him back.

1. Griffey is NOT as bad as he is made out to be by you guys...just because he doesn't have the range he used to have, doesn't mean that he is a horrendous liability. Griffey can still get it done, Ken Williams has shown no disappointment in what Griffey offered to the team. There is a good chance that he could be a regular CF/RF in a similar platoon to what he had with Anderson in Chicago. Pinch Run/Pull him after an at bat in the 7/8th inning for defensive improvement with a guy who can't swing the bat.
2. Griffey won't be going to first base.
3. With the american league, DH is always a possibility to keep him in the line up on his off days
4. From the Marketing Perspective in respect to Seattle, look at Ramirez in LA. They sold record amounts of jerseys at prices higher than any other players. That would be the same thing with Jr. in Seattle. He would practically pay for himself (at 4 mill or so) in souvenir sales, not even mentioning bringing extra fans.
5. For those in Cincy that hated on him as a "virus" and what not...Ozzie and Ken Williams certainly had a different opinion. They said that just having him on the team made them a better team, even if he wasn't in the lineup.
I certainly see Griffey having a choice of where he wants to go, I wouldn't be surprised to see offers from at least 5 clubs. White Sox will probably make an offer, Mariners will probably make an offer, Rays will probably make an offer...and i am sure that there are others out there that want griffey on their roster.

Coltholt, the only people in Cincinnati that think he was a virus or 'clubhouse cancer' are mouthbreathers.
Griffey would certainly give Mariners fans more incentive to come out plus that .350 OBP isn't exactly bad. If he splits time between the field and DH he could probably stay healthy which would help his power numbers. Of course he'd have to give up a bargain contract.

griffey is perfect for the m's right now. here are the reasons:
1.more people in the seats
2.left handed bat at dh, would you rather have jose vidro back?
3.putting him at dh would put clement at 1st to platoon with mike morse.
i know he is older but he would make a great 5th or 6th hitter in the lineup. less chance of getting hurt at dh. hopefully mr. z the new gm can get jj hardy over here from milwaukee. betancourt is more of a concern then griffey. he is playing like a shortstop off the bench.

The Mariners need to jump on this now and offer him a contract...This is what they need since their gone through rebuilding mode he will definitly bring fans to games...He's just gonna have to take a big paycut.

The only real value to bringing Griffey in now is to put fans in the seats. I know I would go to a few more games if Junior was back. Fact is that Seattle has a ton of questions to answer at a number of positions. That along with their core minor league talent being at least 2 years away means they are going to need to be some stop-gaps brought in.
Griffey would be the king of all stop-gap players. I would like to see him take a stab at 1B. Seattle is devoid of talent there and doesn't have any on the way either.
Griffey would fit in fine as a 1B/DH occasional LFer. He's not getting any World Series rings if he comes to Seattle though and that may weigh heavy on his decision.

"Coltholt, the only people in Cincinnati that think he was a virus or 'clubhouse cancer' are mouthbreathers. "
I would love to agree with you, but Griffey's statements after he got traded offer a different idea. If you really want me to dig up articles, I can, but he said that he felt more appreciation at away games than he did in Cincinnati. People all over the place have been saying, "now that griffey and dunn are finally gone..." that shows that the reds fans seem to think that the reds couldn't do well until griffey was sent away.
Posted by: coltholt | November 01, 2008 at 11:03 PM
coltholt, I know exactly what you're saying. I could never stand the negativity around him caused by the fans here. I was just saying the people who were constantly hating on Griffey were morons. The same idiots who in one week span would hate Griffey for not trying for certain fly balls hard enough and yelling because he dove for a ball but it got past him.
Posted by: Bank Street Grounds | November 02, 2008 at 12:39 AM
Maybe an overrated facet in all of this as well, but it would also help attendance in watching Griffey attempt to reach all of those home run plateaus. He might also be able to help a player such as Wladimir Balantien become a better hitter. I say go for it, Seattle.
Posted by: MattyMets | November 02, 2008 at 09:14 AM
If you wanted griffey for home run plateaus you should have tried for him last offseason. Griffey only (reasonably) has one plateau left and he won't hit that until post all star break 2010 (660/661). If you want him for the plateaus, give him a 3 year deal with incentives for the milestones (3000 hits, 660/661 hrs...other posibilities...outside shot of 2000 RBIs...i don't know all of the all-time standings on the rest of the stats...but i am sure 2000 rbis is getting up there...)

Griffey was over 10 runs below average defensively in part time play last year. He is miserable in the field at this point.

"Griffey was over 10 runs below average defensively in part time play last year. He is miserable in the field at this point."
That may well be an effect of wearing down. Spending more time at DH can help that.

The Mariners are at least 2 years away from contending. Why not sign Jr. as a DH, keep the fans coming. With their young pitching they might even compete a little, and if he really wants to play 3 more years, by then they are probably ready to battle for that ring he needs. Do I think it will happen, no, as a die hard fan would I like to see it happen, yes!
