ESPN's Keith Law has his top 50 free agents ranked. As always, it's a must-read. Law has never been afraid to go against the grain. For example, when he wrote his 2006 list he called Barry Zito, "a third or fourth starter with the reputation of a one or two." Anyway a few highlights from this year's list:

I wonder how much of Dunn's new contract Law will be getting. As soon as Law gets over his Utley man crush he will be proclaiming Dunn the most valuable player on the planet. "Just look at that VORP!! Look at the VORP!!"

Keith Law was dead-on with Ted Lilly being ranked higher than Barry Zito that year. Wasn't he shut out of being a member of the BBWA? What a joke.

Law is the best baseball analyst out there right now, bar none. Also, this line deserves some love:
"Sheets' natural habitat is the disabled list."

Could you ask Law to take his rankings out to 150? For us Twins fans? Thanks -

Burnett is this year's Barry Zito, you heard it here first. He will bust. His wild swings back and forth smell like an $18M per year contract but a 14-12 record with a 4.4 ERA.

I love how Burnett is being touted as such a great pitcher. Yes, he led the league in strikeouts, but he also had an ERA north of 4.00. He's a solid #3, but to be paid and treated like a #1 is insane. Say what you will about Lowe pitching in the NL West, but he stays healthy and is more worthy of being paid like a #1 than Burnett is.

MVPujols,
Maybe you should actually check the stats you make fun of from now, so you don't look quite as ignorant. Dunn just barely cracked the top 100 in VORP, ranking 98th, right between Marlon Byrd and Ty Wiggington. The top 5 in VORP last season were Pujols, Hanley, Chipper, Berkman, and David Wright in that order...looks like it does a pretty good job to me.

DodgersBruin -
Lowe is 4 years old, so that's gotta go into play.
Posted by: Smoltz's Beard | November 14, 2008 at 09:36 AM
Burnett's ERA+ last season was 105. He was barely over league average. At 31. Plus, he has a long injury history.
Lowe's ERA+ last season was 131. He's also never been on the DL in his career.
Yes, Lowe is 4 years older, but since Lowe is a sinker ball pitcher, he doesn't rely on pure velocity to pitch. Burnett does. If you sign either pitcher for a 4 year deal, Lowe is the better option.

nixa37: you aren't totally wrong but you failed to realize that VORP is for each indivdual team performance. So it splits up players performance between their 2 teams. Dunn ranked 98th in just what he did for the Reds. And for instance Manny and Tex were each ranked twice ahead of him. Manny actually came in second when you add his scores together and Teixeira came in 6th ahead of Wright and Arod. Dunn's combined numbers put him at tied for 51 overall with Bobby Abreu.

Yeah, I thought 98th seemed a little too low. Thanks for pointing that out. Still, as you mentioned, Dunn couldn't crack the top 50. The big, bad VORP monster thinks he's a very good, but certainly not elite, offensive player, which is what most reasonable people seem to think.

maybe Mr Law doesn't get into the BBWA because he's such a condascending SOB. Same reason some players don't get into the HOF.

I'm not arguing with you, simply stating what is a pretty obvious reason as to why Burnette could fetch more than Lowe. You think many of the FO executives would actually go so far as to do research before they made an offer? Please...
Posted by: Smoltz's Beard | November 14, 2008 at 10:49 AM
And also...just because he was never on the DL doesn't mean jack. Glavine was never on the DL as well and, although older than Lowe, we all saw how that turned out last season.

Sympathy laugh. Well played.

Bill Conlin says hi.

hey mr morgan,
well done. Mr Conlin is the most self effacing man I've ever heard from. My goodness I miss him on "the sports reporters" on ESPN. I wonder why he's not on anymore (he says with wonder and amazement.
Oh and Keith Law hates every phillies prospect, its a fact, LOL
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 14, 2008 at 11:27 AM
I think a lot of people hate the Phillies current prospects. Not that it matters all that much right now given the title.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 14, 2008 at 12:05 PM
I still think burnett is a risk the orioles need to take.. they are desperate for pitching and need guys who can give our prospects time in the minors
Posted by: #1O'sfan | November 14, 2008 at 12:10 PM
I think Keith is one of the few credible guys that ESPN still pays.
"Burnett is this year's Barry Zito, you heard it here first. He will bust. His wild swings back and forth smell like an $18M per year contract but a 14-12 record with a 4.4 ERA."
I'm not saying you are wrong....but
1. His stuff is way, way better than Zito's is, especially after Zito lost his velocity on the fastball.
2. He just put up a 4 era in the AL east...just saying.
I still kind of like Lowe better too...and for that matter, I might rather take a chance on Sheets, who is better than both of them when healthy and will likely get a smaller contract. You just can't put more than one high upside but injury prone pitcher in your rotation...like the Cubs for instance. Harden and Sheets/Burnett don't mix well...but a Dempster/Lowe guy would be perfect.

NJM,
oh come on now, Donald, Marson, Carrasco, Taylor, Berry.
Not to mention in lower levels, Stutes, DeFratus, D'Arnaud, Kyle Drabek, Knapp, Sampson and Savery, Cisco. Not to mention how much i love the Jarred Cossart signing.
Who says the Giants have all the best pitching prospects??
(bracing for the onslaught of Giants fans)
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 14, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Every team has a ton of names you can list but the Phillies still don't have a single high-upside, high probability player. There's not some massive conspiracy to keep the Phillies minor league rankings down, its just how the analysts (pretty much across the board) see it.
(Doesn't Berry sort of remind you of someone, atleast minor league profile wise. If he brings you guys back another stud reliever, that would be pretty nice.)
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 14, 2008 at 01:05 PM
oh come on now, carrasco isn't a high upside guy at 21 ready to make his MLB debut after he crushed the 2nd half against the IL? And what about Taylor? He's Ryan Howard Jr but with a gun for an arm and minimal strikeouts. He also had better overall stats in his first minor league year than Ryan. We'll see how he does at Reading. A year or two of those two together is going to be nightmare for NL pitchers.
Oh and I LOVE Berry. Followed him as he broke the MILB SB record for the Clearwater Threshers. Who you comparing him to??? To me he's a mix of Rollins and Victorino, more like Shane though obviously by position and also by emotional fire. I could see them signing Shane for 3 years until he's ready.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 14, 2008 at 01:40 PM
Carrasco could be very nice, but I don't remember any recent reports that have him pegged as a 1/2. If they're out there, maybe I missed them. Taylor, sure, maybe, but he's hardly a high probability bet at this point. What I'm saying is you can take the top prospect (or top few) in most systems and, with pretty high certainty, say you wouldn't trade them for any single Phillies prospect and so on down the list. Just go to BA right now and look at the AL East. Jackson for Carrasco (or whoever you'd call #1) maybe, the other 4 (Wieters, Anderson, Price, Snider), no chance.
(Re: Berry is 23 and just put up a .069 isoP. He has 6 HRs in over 1,000 minor league PAs. How could that possibly remind you of Victorino or Rollins? You don't see him as a Bourn again version of a certain other former Phillie?)
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 14, 2008 at 03:05 PM
no way. Alright I'm admittedly biased but Berry is going to be much better than Michael Bourn. Bourn will be lucky to hit .220 for as long as he stays in the majors. Berry will hit between .260-.270 easy.
And while I'd love another steal like the Lidge trade there's no way that lightning is striking twice.
MLB.com likened Berrt more to Kenny Lofton (but hopefully without the attitude)
Carrasco's definitely not a 1 but I think he can be a 2 (although he's not right now). I was kind of disgusted though when KLAW when asked thought Niese was much better than Carrasco. Sorry I don't see that.
IF (and its a big IF), Taylor does as well at Reading as he did in Lakewood/Clearwater this past year he'll be up sometime mid 2010.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 14, 2008 at 03:16 PM
oh and victorino was never a big HR hitter until this year vs CC. That's why i didn't catch the comparison and also I have higher aspirations for Berry than Bourn.

Apparently my sarcasim was lost on you Nixa. We have blue font over at stltoday.com that effectively alerts other posters of instances just like this. It would have saved you the trouble of typing "VORP" into a search engine and then acting as if the player ratings were committed to your memory...
