« Dodgers' Offer To Manny: Two Years, $45 Million | Main | Cameron Not Likely For Yankees »

Latest On Rafael Furcal

According to Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times, the Dodgers have a two-year deal in mind for free agent shortstop Rafael FurcalSI.com's Jon Heyman recently said their offer was in the two-year, $25-30MM range.  His agent is looking for four years, and says ten other teams have expressed interest.

Heyman believes the Orioles and Royals may be suitors, though Furcal may be out of the Royals' price range.  The Tigers are out, but the Cubs, Giants, Blue Jays, and A's are in.

Tigers suck

In that price range the Braves can definitely get involved should they trade Escobar.

I think the A's have enough injury prone players for now.

No more than 2 years if its the A's, please.

I think the Cubs should and will be a big player in this.

If the Dodgers can't get it done, Walt Jocketty will be front and center. Can't find a better fit for Cincy. Sure-handed short stop who can hit from the leadoff spot. Give him 4 yr/$50

The Royals should make a play for Furcal. Then move Aviles to 2nd and that is a pretty nice looking infield if Gordon can start playing up to his potential.

Royals don't have the money to sign a 3/45 type of deal.

Coltholt, 4/50 might be enough to get it done. I wouldn't mind seeing him team up with Phillips, that'd be one hell of a MI.

No reason for the Giants to get involved...Probably be a 4 yr 40-60mill contract. We need big bats, not more fast leadoff guys.

With the Cubs showing interest, you have to wonder if they're going to include Theriot in a Peavy Deal. That would make sense as it'd give them some proven major league talent at short instead of Cedeno.

If we lost Theriot, you'd hate to start the year with Cedeno, so Furcal makes the most sense as a leadoff hitter who can bat lefty with some speed.

It'd really limit us on our RF choices, but worst case you keep Fukudome there and pray he learns. Try and trade for Hermida or someone in that tier. So much going on... no time to do my real work!

Bd, I think Fukudome is going to improve in his second year. iirc that's been the case with most of the Japanese hitters who've come over. Fuku obviously has the talent since he did it for nearly 3 months, he just needs to adjust, or figure out what he needs to adjust too and then make the adjustment. Maybe he just needs to listen to advice. He's got all winter to let it sink in. The guy has talent, now the league isn't new to him, time to start earning his money.

"Royals don't have the money to sign a 3/45 type of deal."

I'm not buying that the Royals are out of money. I know there is the whole Dutton story and they are trying to get Grienke and Gordon locked in. But they were looking to add Hunter and Kuroda on last year too, which means someone has budgeted about $13M for 09' payroll.

Plus Moore has been known to run interference when pursuing a FA.

With all that being said, I don't think the ROyals get Furcal. I think they will be a close second in the bidding. Someone else will realize they need a SS more than teh Royals do.

"Fuku obviously has the talent since he did it for nearly 3 months, he just needs to adjust, or figure out what he needs to adjust too and then make the adjustment."

So you're saying he should adjust?

how about the Twins as a darkhorse. For once the have to money to afford him. they were talking about offering o cab 3/30 so why not a bit more for a younger higher caliber player. few teams need a ss as bad as them and Furcal definatly wants to play for a team that will contend next year. i dont know if the reds A's or baltimore will. The Cubs certainly will but will they have the money with the ownership in flux and the desperate need for a right fielder? I dont know i just dont see them finding the cash unless they move fuku or d lee.

I agree with 55saveslives. Though Furcal, when healthy, would be a great leadoff hitter and would get on base, signing him wouldn't fill the giants needs: A power bat that can drive runners in.

Den Orath-

I think Furcal makes more sense for the Twins than any of the other teams mentioned.

Much rather get a higher caliber guy in Furcal than O-Cab.

I don't see the Cubs adding 25 mil in payroll with Peavy & Furcal. They would need to dump some salaries before they could even consider such a move.

If the Royals do not sign Greinke they will fight very hard for Furcal. They seemed to be very interested in Furcal and Dayton Moore has been dumping money into FA since he has arrived. Gil Meche was his first and he has proven to be solid. Maybe not 5/55 solid, but solid. Mahay was shutdown out of the pen this year. And Guillen... well we shall see what he does this year. The Royals have been in need of a SS since Angel Berroa didnt pan out following his ROTY season he had. (Which was five years ago) So the Royals could heavily pursue Furcal but i cant see them making any more moves if they do sign him. Especially if they resign Greinke. If they dont resign Greinke i would expect to see Furcal in KC in 09'.
