Mets Join Yanks In Sabathia Chase?

Bill Madden, Anthony McCarron, and Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News say the Mets will be in the mix for C.C. Sabathia:

Omar Minaya was dicussing a trade for a pitcher with a GM but said he would first have to see how Sabathia's free agency was progressing, a baseball executive said. A Mets official subsequently wouldn't deny interest in Sabathia.

Of course, the Yankees hope to sign Sabathia quickly. Joel Sherman believes the Mets are only trying to drive up the price for the Yankees, since both teams will be in on the same second-tier starters.  Matthew Cerrone doesn't even see the Daily News article as an indicator of Met interest in C.C.

The Mets aren't seriously in on CC. The NY writers are just doing this b/c it's a "competition" the Yankees are going to win. Look how last year no one said there was a competition with the Mets and Yankees for Santana? And even then, they write the Mets should be thankful the Yankees let them have him.

are you kidding me? What happend to "They only have $25 million to spend" To me this is his agents driving up the Yankees price.

The Mets only have $25 million to spend? HAH! I don't think they're major plays for CC either but I highly doubt they have no more to spend than that. They're opening a new stadium and have to appease an absolutely livid fanbase.

reardentech,

i read that in one of these sites. Right now theyre at about 120million or so without resigning Perez. They need 2 starters IMO if they don't sign him and while I don't want them to get a new bullpen I expect them to! Oh and there's talk around that their hitters aren't clutch enough so maybe they'd want to drag Pete Rose out of retirement if he promises to stop gambling and Selig lets him back in, so i think they have more fish to fry (haha Marlins joke) than going after CC. Unless of course they want to get into the Yankees stratosphere of payroll.

If they could somehow pull this off, Johan and CC back to back is as terrifying as it comes. If they could get into the playoffs, I'm not sure who could beat them.

cubbyfan,

somehow i still feel the mets will find a way to screw it up, even if they got CC. Come on now, they're the Mets.

''somehow i still feel the mets will find a way to screw it up, even if they got CC. Come on now, they're the Mets.''

I guess the tables have really turned, huh? We've even managed to make the Philadelphia Phillies look good after all these years of turmoil! ::throws up::

The Mets have way too many holes to be spending $25 million per year on Sabathia. Either way, they'll manage to lose 2-1 every time CC starts if he were to become a Met.

I'd love more teams to jump in the pool on CC to get the asking price up so the Yankees could go for a nice 10 year, $190 million contract on Sabathia.

gotta love philly fans....

so insecure like their boy, jimmy rollins. it's not enough to win but then like the true schmucks they are have to throw barbs at the mets. it's pretty funny and sad at the same time.

the mets aren't getting cc although i'd love them to. it's k-rod, one or two lower tier starters to supplement #57, big pelf and maine and then retool the bullpen.

The most hilarious aspect of this rumor is that if the Mets actually managed to get Sabathia, they'd still manage to miss the playoffs.

FranzFerdinand,

dont' be bitter that your UnAmazin' Mets got blown out of the water for the second year in a row in the NL East. Philly was just better, pal.

''dont' be bitter that your UnAmazin' Mets got blown out of the water for the second year in a row in the NL East. Philly was just better, pal.''

Touche, but don't get your head blown up. The Phillies weren't as good as the last two years IN THE REGULAR SEASON as the Mets were (historically) bad. The Mets unbelievably handed the division to Philly two frickin' years in a row, but I think this ''blown out of the water'' concept is a little farfetched.

I'd say the Angels blew the rest of the NL West out of the water this year, not the Phillies with the Mets.

matty and franz,

you see that's what gets us philly fans riled up. You act like we didn't win and you lost. The Mets can make all the excuses they want, but in the end we won. That's what pissses me off about Mets fans the most. I don't care that they spend 20-25% or more than us or that we can't afford to keep all our players (Burrell) if we wanted to and that you can afford to get a second closers salary on your staff. Give us a little credit, that's all. If you did that, I think you'd see a kinder, gentler Phillies fan (or at least as much as that's possible.)

matty,

and actually every CC start would be 5-1. It'd be 1-1 going to the 10th and after CC had thrown 150 pitches he'd be pulled for Heilman and he'd give up a Grand slam to lose it.

MattyMets,

I'm not a Phillies fan, just pointing out that you should give them respect when it is due. I know its hard cuz they are a rival and I respect that, but all the same, they are the champions.

Haha there go the Mets again going after players they don't need...As a Phillies fan i hope they do sign him since we rocked him in playoffs.

looks like someone needs to take a remedial course on reading comprehension. care to quote exactly where i said anything about "the phillies not winning and the mets lost".

hint: you won't find it because i never said it. what i did say is it's funny and sad how you fans and your team are still preoccupied with the mets when you won the wc. i guess not meaning much in 25 years will do that to a city.

Spend the 25 mil on K-Rod, Lowe and Pudge

the mets don't need pudge. did you see him play with the tigers/yankees this past season? no thanks.

derek lowe would be nice but the yankees and sox might overpay for him. omar will have to be creative with the pursuit of starters this offseason as outside of cc, everyone else has major issues that give you pause and carry significant "buyer beware" baggage with them. case in point? oliver perez.

I have a lot of respect for everyone on the Phillies except Jimmy Rollins because he has a big mouth. The Phillies are actually a very likable team, its just that everyone hates them because their fans have absolutely no class.

Actually it was the WS(WORLD SERIES) we won, not the WC (Wildcard) that's what you couldn't even do. Oh and i was referring to MattyMets who said:

The Mets unbelievably handed the division to Philly two frickin' years in a row,

Should i have lumped you two toghether, probably not, but i also didn't made a snide remark about reading comprehension now did I?

learn to direct your comments to the proper party then you won't get the snide remark back, phils. by the way, wc = world championship or couldn't you figure that out?

geez, it's funny how desperate you guys are for validation. you guys won. talking smack on a mets-related post doesn't get bonus points for next season.

and nymforlife,

Jimmy calls it like he sees it. Actually he was wrong about one prediction. He said before the season started that we'd win 100 games this year (we won 103).

And admit it, if he was on your team you'd love him.

And everyone doesn't hate the Phillies, everyone hates the Mets because of their antics (elbow bumps etc). Remember the Jose, Jose, Jose chants by Braden Looper of the Cards after you lost to them in the NLCS in 2006. How about the Marlins that LIVE to beat you guys on the last weekend of the season. Even NYC radio announcers/sportswriters etc admit that the Mets are the team in the NL that fans of other teams love to hate because of their "attitude". I heard one announcer say a couple weeks back that the Mets "have a superiority complex with absolutely no reason to have one". Summed it up pretty good I thought.

Can't wait for Spring Training. Good luck finding a bullpen.

Wow, sorry my bad. you're a little testy, even for a fan of a team who collapsed two years in a row.

Enjoy your offseason.

actually i'm not testy at all. i'm actually laughing at your obvious inferiority complex. stop worrying about the mets and focus on your team who wants to repeat.

don't you have homework to do, little boy?

actually i'm not testy at all. i'm actually laughing at your obvious inferiority complex. stop worrying about the mets and focus on your team who wants to repeat.

Well as the "ugly stepsister" in New York I'm sure you understand inferiority complexes pretty well.

I'm very confident in my teams chances to repeat because we know how to perform in the clutch. We'll be just fine. How much will you sweat come September 2009?

pretty original stuff, phils...

still seeking validation. how about we let the mets fans and people who follow baseball aka the adults discuss and you can go back to your jimmy rollins action figure, ok little boy?

Congrats to Phillies fans and way to go picking up Lidge that is the reason you were better than the Mets this year. This is the only reason you were better than the Mets. They scored the same amount of runs but the Phillies bullpen was solid. If the mets had Lidge the Mets would have won the division easily.

I give the Phillies credit for winning the last weeks but it wouldn't have happened if the Mets bullpen didn't blow it.

"The Mets have way too many holes to be spending $25 million per year on Sabathia. Either way, they'll manage to lose 2-1 every time CC starts if he were to become a Met."

The funny thing is this was also the case last year, when the Mets had too many holes to give Santana 20 million, but nobody gave a shyt last year. And atleast CC wouldn't cost prospects. Why the hell not? Sign CC, let Murphy/Tatis play LF, Let Heilman/Niese be the 5th starter, let Castillo play second (or find another 2B for 3 million, that isn't a hard hole to fill), and put together a bullpen made up of guys like Juan Cruz and Jeremy Affeldt, and then trade for a closer. It could be done.

And you have to give the Phils credit, but the fact is, and this is a fact, not mine or anybody elses opinion, the Mets held the Phils destiny in THEIR hands with 2 weeks to go, 2 seasons in a row. The Phils may have played great down the stretch, but they did not control their own fate. They needed help from NY to get into the playoffs, two years in a row, and they got it two years in a row. Sure, they played well down the stretch, but it makes no difference if the Mets don't collapse in front of you both times.

I give the Phillies credit for winning the last weeks but it wouldn't have happened if the Mets bullpen didn't blow it.

you see there you all go disrespecting the World Champs again.

Oh and Franz, i'm tired of your game. I love the "act like he's a kid" routine. Let's put it this way, I'm not old enough to remember Jim Bunning as a Phillie but plenty old enough to remember Dave Cash. Time for you to move on now. Thankfully not all Mets fans are like you.

And believe me, I give Philly all the credit in the world. Especially in the playoffs, but they did (moreso in 07 then 08, because in 08 the WC was a fallback) have help to reach the post season.

nrmax,

i've gotta disagree with you 100%

How about looking at it from another perspective. How about we are both evenly matched teams fighting for the same thing and we have a little more guts, guile, whatever you want to call it to pull it out. Feel free to blame it on injuries or whatever you like, I've seen that charachterization too (not from you but from others)

I really doubt that if the tables were turned Phillies fans would be saying that we "HANDED YOU" the division or whatever context most Mets fans say.

To me its as if Red Sox fans were to say, hey, we handed the Rays the divsion. They didn't, they won it outright and I don't think I've ever heard or seen a Red Sox fan say that. A 162 game season doesn't allot for chance and happenstance. Maybe in a 16 game football season, but not 162 games.

And in 2007 we beat you "personally" in the last 8 games we played.

2009 starts anew and IF you can get past us and win the division I'll be pissed but I won't go and say we handed it to you.

Hey philsWSchamps. You're right. I'm a die hard Mets fan but the fact of the matter is that you guys got it done. It doesn't matter how, the bottom line is results. So enjoy it.
Mets fans, take a short trip with me for a minute. I believe that it was in the beginning of September that the Mets were beating the Phillies 7-0 going into the 7th. We proceded to blow that game. It's called a statement game and we blew it. Enough said. Phillies fans, take a bow and enjoy the moment.
By the way, Mets fans. Does Philly now supplant the Braves as public enemy number 2, behind the Yankees? We can come up with all kinds of excuses but until the Mets fix their problems, namely the bullpen, the same close but no cigar results will occur.

Well said surdo. I think the Phillies Vs Mets may end up being the National League equivalent of Yankees Vs Red Sox.

Let's Go Phillies
