Mets Rumors: Castillo, Heilman, Putz

The latest on the Mets...

  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post says Luis Castillo met with the Mets and implored them to keep him.  Castillo said he'll get into shape this winter.  The Mets will still consider trade possibilities, but a deal doesn't seem likely.
  • David Lennon of Newsday reports that Aaron Heilman called Omar Minaya yesterday to request a move to the rotation.  The Mets are still opposed to it.  Lennon adds that the Mets have received Francisco Rodriguez's medical records.  Sherman says the Mets don't even want to do four years for K-Rod though.
  • Tracy Ringolsby says the Mets have targeted J.J. Putz as their priority.  ESPN's Jayson Stark said the same yesterday.  With Putz set to earn just $5MM next year, the move would give the Mets the flexibility to fill other needs or add a free agent closer anyway.  Similarly, Shermans says the Mets "remain very interested in Huston Street."

Comments

1. The Mets don't need K-Rod. They need a bullpen.

2. So, what are these Orlando Hudson/Mets rumors I'm hearing?

3. If Heilman has to be traded, how about Heilman to the A's for Santiago Casilla? Reclamation project starter for reclamation project reliever. Although that deal does favor the A's because Heilman has more upside, but Casilla was better in 2008. Such a move would allow both Josh Outman and Gio Gonzalez to develop further in AAA, and solidify the rotation as Duke-Gallagher-Eveland-Braden-Heilman.

Although, I don't think the Mets should trade Heilman.

It would cost too much in prospects to acquire Putz, better off, for a big market team, giving the extra money to K-Rod or Fuentes and keeping the kids

Why would the Mariners want to trade JJ Putz? He's a nasty closer that makes only $5 million. So why trade him? The Mets must be prepared to blow the M's away with an offer.

Because a rebuilding team with a weak farm system doesn't need a closer. Putz will be an FA before the team's good again.

I could see Mets offering Murphy for Putz...I think they'd bite.

They won't compete, might aswell rebuild.

That works.

Murph could slot in LF for 2009 and then slide in to take Beltre's place at 3B if he isn't resigned in 2010.

I think trading for Putz is a great idea. I think Murphy could be a good starting point. Add in a couple of low-level prospects, and I think the Mariner's will take it.

Better than losing a 1st round pick to the Angels. And this way, they'd still have payroll flexibility to upgrade their starting rotation this year, and payroll flexibility for next years crop of FAs.

is anybody else concerned about a comment from a player that he promises to get in shape for this year like he wasn't in previous seasons?

alright I'm trying not to laugh hysterically picturing the conversation with Castillo and Minaya and Bernazard saying:

"Really, I'll work harder now, I'll try harder now, don't banish me to the Nationals like you did Milledge"

Oh to be a fly on the wall of that conversation.

"is anybody else concerned about a comment from a player that he promises to get in shape for this year like he wasn't in previous seasons?"

I am. He really wasn't in shape last season.

He needs to be gone. I just don't know how.

''He needs to be gone. I just don't know how.''

Agreed. It doesn't look like there's a way out of that contract. Plus, the only way the Mets could get rid of Castillo is for a worse contract, and I don't know of any teams in need of a second baseman that could give us another terrible contract in return.

I guess just keep Castillo and hope that he magically gets two new knees.

An in-shape Castillo still isn't a very good player.

What exactly can the Mets exchange for Putz? It's nice to target an elite closer, but it's usually better when you can actually trade for him.

Putz seems to be the best option at this time for the Mets. Though he will probably break down in the middle of the season and we will be paying 2 closers for not even performing. I really the Mets will just need the strong bullpen and add one bat and it will be sailing from there.

1. Replace two men in the pen. Dont even bother on a closer. Get a strong pen and someone will step up to the roll. Heilman did alright in the closers roll last season. Anybody else notice that?

2. Why does Daniel Murphy have to play second? Have him in left field with Nick Evans. Give them there platoon experience and watch them mold into stars.

3 Resign Perez or Martinez and pick up a quality arm. I would like to see Roy Halliday just because the mets will have the beast rotation.

there are my three tips for the Mets though they are also everyone elses.

Sorry I don't know if you can say that either of them will be stars. I think solid contributors are the best you can hope for.

Yes and No, while the lack of conditioning is a bit troubling, you also need to put it in context.

Last Offseason, Luis Castillo had offseason surgery to clean out his knees, as such, he was probably not allowed to do the running and lower body exercizes associated in a normal offseason routine. Then he played through injuries for much of the regular season (Possibly due to said lack of conditioning)

Now that he's healthy for an offseason, he can catch up on that conditioning that he was unable to do before.

Putz is coming off a 3.88 ERA, 1.60 WHIP season where he spent time on the disabled list. He also only has 1 year (and an option) left on his contract. You're not exactly buying him at peak value.

As for what it would take, I'm not sure. I don't believe the Mets would deal F-Mart or Murphy (And since his hamstring strain, who knows if teams would want to trade for an injured player anyways), nor would they hurt their low minors, leaving a limited group of prospects to deal from. I do know that the Mariners asked for Jon Niese and a prospect for Raul Ibanez back at the trading deadline, I realize that GM has been canned, but for the most part it's probably still the same scouts suggesting that the Mariners like Niese. I wouldn't rule out him being a significant piece of a package (Along with 2 or 3 other pieces)

I hate, hate, hate, hate hate hate the idea of signing K-Rod. But I would rather lose first round picks for the next 3 years by signing K-Rod then lose Murphy by moving him for Putz.

I hope Seattle can get good value for Putz, but they shouldn't be able to. He was awful last year. Even his 3.88 ERA was deceiving. At no point was he the same guy as in 2007 or 2006. If Seattle can move him for good value still, I'd be all for it. I think it's probably only something like 50/50 that he reverts to being dominant again.

Dunno who I'd like from the Mets. Neise obviously, or maybe some combination (2?) of Carp, Evans, Kunz or Murphy. I doubt Seattle could get that much, though. They haven't opened up negotiations with the Mets yet and are in no rush to move Putz when they can hold on to him in hopes that he regains some value.

What about Putz + Washburn, or Putz + Lopez? Thoughts?

I think that helping the Mariners out with salary relief for Washburn would make sense to lessen the prospects for the Mets.

Seattle gets:
Parnell, Carp, Kunz, Antonini

Mets get:Putz and Washburn with the Mets taking on Washburn's contract.

I also think that when new GM's take over they like to get rid of bad contracts of the past GM.

Thoughts?

My thought is why would Seattle want all the mets crap. no not their carp, their CRAP.

I guess Carp had a good season in AA but has proven zero. Parnell was horrible in AAA when promoted and Kunz has been getting shelled in Arizona.

Any conversation for any starting pitcher (don't tell me you're taking his salary) and a closer would have to include Murphy.

Donnie Walsh: Werd up playa.
