« Rockies Rumors: Embree, Shouse, Taveras, Atkins | Main | MLBTR Chat Transcript »
12:01pm: David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News says everyone expects the Phils to re-sign Moyer. He says not to read into the Lowe/Burnett inquiries; the team has inquired on more than 25 free agents. MLB.com's Ken Mandel names six of them: Doug Brocail, Russ Springer, Raul Ibanez, Rocco Baldelli, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Nick Punto.
10:16am: According to Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies are still talking to free agent pitcher Jamie Moyer but don't have an agreement yet. Moyer apparently wants a multiyear deal. The Phils recently contacted Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett to hedge their bets.

Lowe would seem like a better idea in Philadelphia with his groundball rate. Moyer keeps the ball down, but he's a flyball pitcher. His ERA In Philly was 4.61 vs. a (surprising) 2.92 on the road.

They need to just get this done. Then focus on LF.

Id love to keep Moyer and sign Derek Lowe.
Unlikely, but it would make for a formidable rotation. Hamels, Myers, Lowe,Blanton, and Moyer.
I would like to see the Phils go after Dye or Ordonez too. Dye is better suited in LF and could replace Burrell. I understand we are on his list of teams he cant be traded to. Maybe he will waive it for a chance to win.
Go PHILS!

Really, what would be so bad about not signing Moyer and letting someone else sign him ?
It's not like you losing Texiera or Rameriz, but he'll bring back the same type A compensation.
Or is it that no one besides the Phillies would sign Moyer.

BaseBallz,
Moyer won't sign anywhere but Philly or Seattle I'd expect. No reason for him to. He's 46 now. Not exactly an age where you start out somewhere new.
And he was 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA so he definitely earned his Type A status.

Agreed, Phils. I don't see him anywhere but Philly or Seattle either.
Also, BaseBallz, Moyer has obviously been a great mentor for the younger guys on the staff - especially Hamels. Losing him would hurt on multiple levels.

Kewl guys, thanks for the info.
I just saw Moyer get shelled in the postseason and don't have the benefit of watching him all year =(

BaseBallz, did he get shelled in game 3 of the World Series?
Posted by: voiceofreason | November 26, 2008 at 12:29 PM
Call me crazy but I could see him in St. Louis.

voiceofreason,
haha no he was speaking of the Dodgers game. He didn't do too fantastic against the Brewers either although I thought he got pulled a little early. Overall, he was our 4th best starter in the postseason but 2nd best all year long. To me go 2 years 15 million and call it a day. The second year he can be almost a defacto pitching coach because that's what he is anyways as PhillyPhan6 states.
Moyer excels against overanxious teams and younger players becuase he hits his corners. He also does better with a slightly wider strike zone and if he's not getting his calls he's going to get hit. If he gets them though, he's very capable of 6 IP 1 or 2 ER.

CubbyFan - Why St. Louis? Are you saying that because he fits in the rotation, or do you know something I don't about a Moyer connection there? I agree that he fits there as a player, but as stated above, I don't think he wants to pick up and move again. His whole family is still in Seattle, and he apparently loves it there, so they are a very plausible option for him.
And yes, he got knocked around the first 2 playoff games, but he pitched well in the WS and he pitched great all year. Plus, he always seems to do well against the NL East. They need to keep him around if possible. I'd give him 2 yrs, $15 million in a heartbeat.

By the way, totally not trying to call you out, CubbyFan. I'm really just wondering if there is a St. Louis connection there that I missed.

I say Moyer comes back to the Phillies, and I hope that when he retires as a player that the Phillies keep him as a pitching coach. This guy has made Cole Hamels into one of the best pitchers in the game and can help other young pitchers grow and become great. Plus, I see him as a future manager.
