I want to see Mark Cuban do the perp walk in his orange jumpsuit. Who is more arrogant, Mark Cuban or Martha Stewart?

The Love Song of Scott Proefrock.
Heh.

If true, Cuban deserves to pay the price. I'm not sure what this has to do with MLBTR though. MLB already said there is zero chance he gets the Cubs weeks ago. That should have been the end of it.

Spiney:
Cuban.

"As always, there were some interesting findings in the Bill James Handbook. Derek Jeter has a 93 percent chance to get to 3,000 hits but Alex Rodriguez has only a 49 percent chance at a record 762 home runs"
What an absolutly idiotic comment by Peter Abraham. You can't compare stats like that saying Jeter has a 93% chance and Arod "has only a 49%" chance makes it sound like Jeter is such a better ball player than Arod. Getting 3000 hits is a heck of a lot easier than hitting 762 HR's, hell its a lot easier than hitting 500 HR's. 3000 hits is a milestone not a record, 762 HR's is a record and one that if Arod reached would be all the more impressive considering Bond's steriod issue. Also a 50% shot at probably the most hallowed record in sports shouldn't be considered "has only", I wonder what % chance Jeter has to break Pete Rose's hits record? Pobably closer to 5% than 50%.
I am by no means a Yankees fan but I respect Jeter and Arod as great ballplayers and future Hall of Famers. What I don't respect is the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) suggestions in the NY media and fan base that Jeter is a far superior player than Arod. Jeter is great and all but he's not even the best SS on his own team. Give Arod credit where credit is do. Jeter is one of the best ball players of his time, Arod is among the best in the history of the game.

Steveo26,
Abraham may be using the term "only" becuause the 49% is down from what it was last year (i believe 53%). You may be right, just food for thought.

A little note about Cuban. The charges filed were civil not federal, so he'll only be fined if found guilty. So no orange jumpsuit, Spiney.

Scott Proefrock was a big part of the Orioles good drafting and development of the last few years. He wasn't an integral piece that that should change for the Os but he is a very good baseball man. It will be interesting to see how he impacts the Phillies.
Posted by: basemonkey | November 17, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Way off base, Steveo. Abraham is one of the few Yankee beat writers who consistently scolds/mocks fans for their harsh treatment of Rodriguez.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 17, 2008 at 12:58 PM
I don't know NotJoe,
I think Steveo gave a very good reading of Abrahams comments. Why juxtapose the two players if you were trying to elucidate a point through the comparison ?
Im not saying i care about what it is Abraham is saying, or that it was his conscious intention of making that point, but make the point he did and i respect when someone reads into how things are written.

And more importantly where are all the signings ???
I need big deals to be made to get me through my day.

"Jeter is one of the best ball players of his time,"
I don't even know that I would give him that much credit...

Why link to baseballcube? It's like a myspace page with everything going on each page. Baseball-reference.com has minor league stats now and is a much easier read.

Aduncaroo:
Since 96 who in the world has been a better SS than Jeter?
Maybe Arod overall but he hasn't played there in 5 years.
Maybe Omar Vizquel but only defensively.
Maybe Young has been a better hitter over the last 5 years because of his power.
But other than Arod no one's been better the last 10 years on BOTH sides of the ball.

I'm obviously a Yanks but I don't drink from the 26 diamond encrusted kool-aid cup. Jeter has avg:
200 hits, and 76 rbis as a #2 batter playing shortstop with a .387 obp/.458 slug/.316 bavg
lifetime.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | November 17, 2008 at 02:46 PM
There have been about 50 or so SS's who have been better defensively than Jeter since 1996. Offensively, there aren't many matches. 120 OPS+ at the SS position for 14 years is outstanding. The myth about him being a special postseason performer are a bit of a myth. He's had such a high sample size of postseason at bats, that it has been nearly identical to his career avg's.
845 reg. season OPS
846 postseason OPS
Posted by: Teetz | November 17, 2008 at 02:58 PM
Teetz:
Forget about cumulative stats like most post-season hrs. Look at the other stats which are just as impressive, especially considering how many at bats he's had.
Career (playoffs, div champ, world series) .309 bavg and .377 obp. Numerous clutch hits and big plays.
1996: .361 bavg and .409 obp
1999: .375 bavg and .434 obp
2000: .317 bavg and .427 obp
2003: .314 bavg and .384 obp
He sucked in all three rounds in 2001 and in the 1998 world series run he sucked in the 1st two rounds and came alive in the world series hitting .353 bavg and .450 obp.

I love B-Ref but I gotta see the Major and Minor League stats on one page and the K/9 type stats all lined up on the right.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 17, 2008 at 03:13 PM
Yeah so like I said, he's been as good in the postseason as in the regular season. The large amount of at bats in the postseason allow his numbers to be at the mean of his skill level (ie his career as a whole). Obviously all players have great streaks and terrible streaks. Point is, he's been the same players in the postseason as well as the regular season, which is generally a pretty damn good hitter.
Posted by: Teetz | November 17, 2008 at 03:15 PM
All right, hold on...
The Jays claimed Kelvim Jimenez off waivers and then immediately placed him on waivers?
Uh, what?
Posted by: rpriske | November 17, 2008 at 03:32 PM
it really sucks when you're big signing is a front office guy, sigh.

"Aduncaroo:
Since 96 who in the world has been a better SS than Jeter?"
Well first of all...I never said anything limiting it to his position. There have been a bunch of better all around players than Jeter since 96.
If you are limiting this to shortstop...yes, he has been one of the best. However, frankly, he shouldn't be playing SS anymore and should have been the one to move to 3rd base in the first place. Take his stats away from SS and he isn't as impressive.
Jeter is just that, he is very good, but I don't think he is great. If Mark Grace had played a bad defensive SS instead of an outstanding defensive 1B, would you be saying the same thing? Their numbers are a lot alike.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | November 17, 2008 at 04:05 PM
Jeter's a good hitter. I'll give you that. Defensively, however, he should NOT be playing SS. He's one of the worst defensive SS in the league.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 17, 2008 at 04:50 PM
Jeter Career OPS+ through age 34 - 120
Mark Grace Career OPS+ through age 39 - 119
So if Jeter holds his career averages for the next 5 years and doesn't get worse, they will be about as valuable as one another offensively. THen you have to ask, does the fact that he plays an awful SS make him more valuable than if he was to play an excellent first base? Maybe, thats up for debate...but some would say he is actually hurting the team. Anyway, the media hypes Jeter up...I wish Grace had gotten his kind of hype.
