A "great fondness for the Angels" actually means "I can't find a 5 year 70 million dollar deal."

Kevin Towers sure likes to talk, doesn't he?

Don't be mad AtlantaMike. I actually think the Braves did the best thing for their club long-term. They don't have the budget right now to keep their farm system in a constant state of flux, bringing in big money players and dealing their young stars. Hanson and Heyward will be there soon, and I guarantee Hanson will be appreciative of having a SS like Escobar to scoop up grounders.

Towers has every reason to want to get another club involved. In fact, I think he should get two clubs involved, since I doubt the Cubs offer improves much.

I wouldn't mind Renteria back with the Cards for 1 or 2 years.

I think once the Brewers fully realize they are completely out of the CC Sabathia race-which is evident right about now-that they will then turn their attention towards adding the starter they need. I think Jake Peavy is wearing a Brewers uniform next year in exchange for JJ Hardy, Tony Gwynn Jr. and a upper level prospect not named Escobar or Gamel; Perhaps Angel Salome.

K-Rod has said all along that he would prefer returning to the Angels, but that he wouldn't mind going elsewhere if he could get the money.

Anyway, as an Angels fan, I'm not sure whether I'd prefer him to return or not. Arredondo showed great stuff as a rookie, and while he is the leading candidate to assume the closer role, I'd much rather have him as a 7th-inning guy.

I wouldn't mind if Reagins brings him back, but if I had to take my pick behind him and Teixeira, I'd much rather have Tex.

As for the Peavy/Braves talks, remember the last time the Braves acquired a big-name player via trade? They got Mark Teixeira from the Rangers, and he was traded same time next year.

The Braves have a great farm system, and I think they need to build around that. Not that Peavy is a bad pitcher, but he's not going to get them over the hump and overtake the Phillies and Mets in the NL East, and it's not worth losing a fair amount of good prospects.

citron,

That offer falls pretty far short of the Braves offer that apparently couldn't get it done. Escobar already performs at a similar level to Hardy, but he has 5 years left under team control compared to 2 for Hardy, making him far more valuable for a team like the Padres. Tony Gwynn wouldn't even enter in these conversations if not for his father playing for the Padres, he's nothing more than a 4th OF. If the Brewers won't include Escobar or Gamel, then their 3rd prospect is no better than Gorkys Hernandez. The deal also doesn't even contain a pitcher.

The Marlins building around pitching, defense, and speed?!?!?!? Who would of ever knew????

So with another marquee pitching trade gummed up, I think it's time for the Mets to come in and get Peavy like how they got Santana last year

I think even the Met's farm system is fresh out of crap.

"So with another marquee pitching trade gummed up, I think it's time for the Mets to come in and get Peavy like how they got Santana last year"

With what, exactly?

Niese AND F-Mart would have to go over in that trade, and as Towers has shown, that's not even going to be close to enough to get it done.

Chillax. It wasn't meant to be serious

But if you want to make it so, nobody thought that the Mets offer for Santana last year was worth it either

Angels swoop in out of nowhere and land Peavy for:

One MLB ready pitcher (E. Santana, Weaver, or Saunders)

One MLB ready position player (E. Aybar, Willits)

One AAA prospect (Adenhart, Wood, S. Rodriguez)

One low-level prospect.

I'd do some mix of that if I was the Pads or the Angels.

If I were the Angels the offer would look like:

Aybar
Adenhart
Rodriguez
Willits

The Padres take on all very young players with virtually zero service time. Aybar steps in immediately at SS - allowing them to trade Green. Adenhart makes a run at their rotation. Willits can play any OF position and lead-off. Rodriguez is solid (career 860 OPS in the minors - still just 23).

It's not a spectacular offer but considering that Jake is most likely going to ask a team to pick up his $20m+ option that's a fair bounty.

nixa,

The Brewers have a plethora of OF prospects including Lorenzo Cain, Hernan Iribarren, Calib Gindl, Brenan Katin and Brent Brewer. Also, Angel Salome is considered one of the best catching prospects in all of baseball. He his .360 last season with 13 HR and 83 RBI in just 98 games.

There wasn't any pitching prospect in there because the Brewers don't have anybody of any value at the upper levels. Their pitching talent is a ways away from the big leagues.

So no, the Brewers wouldn't be able to provide any pitching help but the Brewers could supply a brand new infield for the Padres.

Let me remind you that JJ Hardy was just voted the second best defensive SS in all of baseball last season (Fielding Bible) and is the only SS in all of baseball not named Hanley Ramirez to hit 50 HR in the last two seasons. An ellusive combination of AVG and power from a position where defense is the most important quality to have. Having Hardy at SS makes the Padres' pitching staff better than any Brewers pitching prospect could.

Oops. I just re-read my original post and saw that I left out a name that I had intended to include; Rickie Weeks.

JJ Hardy, Rickie Weeks, Tony Gwynn Jr. and Angel Salome would, in my mind, be enough to get Peavy in a Brewers' uniform.

Hey brewers fan the funny thing you are failing to realize is that peavy would never waive his ntc for a team in milwaukie...its amusing to see that you think he would or the brewers could afford his weak contract let alone sabathia and sheets. C.c. And Ben want out of that hole so good luck buddy. Your best bet is the dodgers send you 2 minor league pitching prospects for hardy.

"JJ Hardy, Rickie Weeks, Tony Gwynn Jr. and Angel Salome would, in my mind, be enough to get Peavy in a Brewers' uniform."

The Padres don't want arbitration eligible players back in return. Thus, Hardy and Weeks don't work.

Mike Downey is a complete tool!

White Sox
SP- Gavin Floyd
SP- Jon Danks
SP- Mark Buehrle
SP- Clayton Richard
SP- Jose Contreas

C- AJ Pierzynski
1B- Paul Konerko
2B- Chris Getz
3B- Josh Fields
SS- Alexei Ramirez
LF- Carlos Quentin
CF- Brian Anderson/ trade
RF- Jermaine Dye

I say Dye and Vazuez are gone. The Sox will get Willy Taverez, trade Dye and Vazquez for someone. They will look kinda different.

"The Padres don't want arbitration eligible players back in return. Thus, Hardy and Weeks don't work."

And you know this to be a fact? This deal would give the Padres 4 out of the 9 starters for opening day 2010. I'm pretty sure what's most important for the Padres is that they get the most in return. If anything, they can decide to hang onto Khalil Greene and find plenty of teams that will give up pitching prospects for JJ Hardy.

But I suppose we can agree to disagree. =)

"And you know this to be a fact? This deal would give the Padres 4 out of the 9 starters for opening day 2010."

They're cutting payroll. They won't be contending in 2009, and they might not even be contending in 2010. When you're cutting payroll, you're looking to add talent that's not close to arbitration eligible. Unless they're planning to flip Hardy to another team, Hardy does nothing for the long term success. But yeah, we can agree to disagree.

BLEEDINGCUBBIEBLUE- Contreras is done. He can't be counted on for a single 2009 start. If Vaz is traded, either Poreda is ready for the rotation or someone else is brought in via FA/trade.

I don't think Dye is gone.
