The writer at the STL PD doesn't have his facts straight.

It doesn't matter if the Cards wait on Renteria. Teams can retroactively offer arbitration to their free agents after they sign with other teams. The Cubs did that last year with Jason Kendall after he signed with Milwaukee.

It's a ridiculously stupid flaw in the rules, but it is what it is. So it doesn't matter when a team signs Renteria, if they didn't have one of the 15 worst records in baseball they'll lose their first round pick for signing Renteria or any type A free agent.

Why has it been decided that Detroit won't offer Renteria arbitration? If he accepts they get one year of a SS which is what they're looking for anyway and if he doesn't they get draft picks. Not offering him arb seems foolish.

How would arbitration make him over $1m MORE than he made in 2008 after an abysmal year both offensively and defensively?

The Tigers obviously want to spend less that $11m at SS since they declined Renteria's option, but have said time and time again that they'd bring him back at a lower price. I'm fairly certain that Dombrowski has not stated how much he wants to spend at SS or has emphatically said that Renteria will not be in a Tiger uniform next year.

Again a decision to not offer him arbitration seems totally foolish. They need 1 year of a SS (if he accepts) and they desperately need to restock a farm system that has been decimated by big trades.

Plus, the market for Renteria looks pretty good between St. Louis, san Francisco and Oakland for him to accept arbitration. Heck, two of those teams could sign him without forfeiting a 1st round pick.

Nice twist on the "If you can't beat him, grab him" philosophy the Cubs seem to be employing towards Randy Johnson by looking at him.

Honestly, I like this move, probably short term (1 year and an option?) at very low cost for a guy that will probably win 10-15 games and hopefully, when the Cubbies get back to the NLDS next season will not suffer a melt down like the rest of the staff seems to have a habit of doing in clutch games with all the big games that Johnson has been thru in his many years of service, rings won and battle tested in the AL East.

A good sign if the Cubs can pull The Big Unit in I believe.

It would be the funniest thing this offseason to myself if the Tigers offered Rent-A-Wreck arbitration, he'd jump on it in a second.. Doubt Renteria gets a scent of half the 10 million he made each of the last 4 seasons and he actually hits ok enough to probably win a raise if he went to arbitration, not just stay at the 10 mil he made in 2008.

I would love for the Cubs to sign Randy Johnson. It would be a low risk one year deal that could pay off big.

Guys, Renteria made $8m in 2008, not $10. He was going to make $11m in 2009 if his option wasn't bought out.

Even at 8 Million, his glove is as awful as Lugo's is and his fielding is like his shoes are nailed to the turf nowdays.

Aging shortstops like Renteria and Lugo making that kind of cash are not highly sought after with poor gloves, nor are they appreciated by pitchers very much either..

Detroit would be taking a 100% risk of being stuck with him if they offer Renteria arbitration have a serious feeling. Orlando Cabrera may be the same age as a SS and a FA, but his glove is still solid and his throws accurate, yet his 2009 salary may top out at what renteria made in 2008 even as just an example of what am trying to give as negative reasons for offering arbitration here and also, the potential signing team would lose a 1R pick if a top 15 team. It just does not add up.

Detroit may be better off trying to unload 1 of the salary problem pitchers it already has (Willis or Robertson) and taking another horrible shortstop back in return (Lugo) with a salary problem of his own as the Tiger shortstop for the next 2 years.

I can't see teams lining up to sign Renteria after his bad season unless they were desperate. Renteria once upon a time used to be a very coveted shortstop but everything from defense to offense has really fallen off.

The best I see Renteria getting is probably a one year deal with an option at 4 - 5 mil per.
