Phillies Trade Golson To Rangers For Mayberry

According to Scott Lauber, the Phillies sent outfield prospect Greg Golson to the Rangers for another outfield prospect, John Mayberry Jr.

Golson, 23, hit .282/.333/.434 in 426 Double A at-bats this year.  Mayberry, 25 in December, hit .263/.316/.474 at Triple A.  Both are former first round picks.  Baseball America says both have a wealth of potential - Golson projects as a young Ron Gant in the best case, while Mayberry has a 35 home run ceiling.

I imagine that Golson's at bats being AA, and Mayberry's AAA is the reason for the trade. Mayberry would be readier to step in for Burrell, if the Phillies went that way.

I think that Golson, (being a 5 tool guy) has a better ceilin than Mayberry

If this is the answer for LF, WTF are they thinking? They need to get a real outfielder that has proven creditials.

Wow....

I am guessing that he will be a platoon partner with Jenkins and/or Stairs.

I guess us Phillies fans can officially say goodbye to Burrell.

i have family in oklahoma and went to see a redhwaks (rangers AAA) game this summer and this mayberry kid aint bad. hit 2 home runs in that game. this is a good pick up for the phillies.

Rangers fans...did you guys have a glut of corner OF types or something?

I know you have Murphy and Cruz, who was Babe Ruth of AAA the past two years

This is a lateral move and not the end of their offseason moves. Don't panic.

Outfield moves, anyway

Sorry for the random, non-baseball post
BUT
Does anyone know how to quickly get rid of a cold
Because I got one and all I can pretty much do is post pathetic comments like this one...

Hilarious. Fans are acting like the Phillies made this move to solve LF.

Take some zink, it helps a LOT!

Hey pskip13

3/4 cup of real hot coffee, add a 1/4 cup of whiskey (scotch will do although I prefer Irish Whiskey myself) and drink slowly. May not cure the cold but you won't mind it as much

Fans in Philly must be happy to finally get rid of Golson, as he's been developing slower than expected.
I thought the Rangers were once high on Mayberry, but chatter on him seems to have died down in recent years. I guess they weren't as happy as originally thought.
I think the Rangers plan on using Golson as their regular center fielder (assuming he improves his hitting), so they can move Hamilton to right. Or use him for a trade. This can't be just a depth move for them.
And I agree, this could be the Burrell replacement for the Phils. At least now, they can focus their money on getting a good 2B to replace Utley for a third of the season.

Why wouldn't they just try and get Nelson Cruz?

Golson will spend next year in Frisco learning to hit a breaking ball.

He is at best 4th on the depth chart to be the Rangers CF behind Marlon Byrd, Julio Borbon (AAA), Daivd Murphy and then maybe Golson.

More of a lateral move that gives the Phils a COF platoon prospect and Texas a guy they can see if he can ever get it together. Texas got tbe better defender and higher potential, the Phils the closer to MLB power hitting COF.

stop freaking out everyone. there's no way that the phils use this kid to replace Burrell. He'll be the 4th outfielder, defensive replacemnt at best. This was more addition by subtraction. While Golson has plenty of potential he strikes out way too much and can't hit the breaking ball to save his life.

IF, Texas can ever get him to figure this out they could have a steal on their hands, but good luck trying.

and they're not getting a secondbaseman. Bruntlett/Donald can handle things until Utley comes back. Chase will bust his tail to get back ASAP so unless (God forbid) there are complications with the surgery he'll be back sooner than everyone thinks.

My biggest worry is IF the doctor at HSS is a Mets fan or not, hmmmm.

Thanks for the Health Tips

And Phillie Fans: Congrats on your WS V!!

Roster filler on both ends. Two guys drafted high that needed a change of scenery.

now that there are phillies fans here:
i need to know. why would the phils think twice about big money on burrell? any money for that matter
am i wrong? because other than one monster season he seems nothing more than a slightly above average - and inconsistent -slugger with below average defence
while he didn't seem like extra baggage or anything, it also didn't seem he was any more of a factor in the WS than, say, geoff jenkins.
i thought losing rowand would set them back more than losing burrell and we see that didn't!

Well knowing the Phils and how cheap their rotton owners are it wouldn't surprise me if this is Burrell replacement...If the Rangers can teach Golson to hit they could get the better end of the deal because Golson got a ton of speed and he's great on defense.

crash,

haha, we've always been here, just quieter when we didn't win.

I would want Burrell back for the right price. If money was NO object then yes give him whatever he wants, but we've got to worry about long term contracts for Hamels, Howard, Victorino, Werth, Madson etc. Not all of those will happen so if we spend too much on a .260 avg 25HR 90 RBI guy who's declining and not good defensively (arm is still good) then it takes away from other things we need. Also in 2-3 years they have kids that will be able to come up and replace Burrell's production (Taylor). Personally, and its a ways down the line, I think they should move Travis D'Arnaud to the outfield as he's blocked by Ruiz but more importantly Marson. Other than Taylor, most of our up and coming outfielders are more of the Victorino mold (quick and not HR hitters like Berry, Brown) and we could use another young HR hitter in the outfield).

Phils WS Dominc Brown is still developing power with his 6'5 frame. He has a nice walk rate too, which bodes well for his development

Burrell will annoy the hell out of you when you watch him every day with his bad swing habits and called 3rd strikes. He's valuable though because he's gonna walk around 100 times and hit 30 HRs

He's a terrible runner, which shows both in the field and on the bases, but he has a very good and accurate arm. He could possibly play a decent 1B as well
