Hopefully the Sox will send one or two of those guys plus maybe another prospect for Saltalamacchia.

Blake makes sense for a lot of teams, not just because of the thin market at 3B but because of his versatility. Remember that from 2004-2006, despite only playing RF full time in 2 of those years, Blake was one of the top ranked RF in baseball in +/-.

Hopefully they DONT send 1 or 2 of those guys PLUS another prospect. And Salty is probably the 3rd catcher the Rangers have that I'd want to trade for. Teagarden, Laird, Salty, Ramirez.
I think Bowden for one of those guys is fair. I just don't see the Sox trading Buchholz or Masterson at this point (esp. Masterson) for any of these guys.

If the Sox are going to be major players for Texiera, I wonder if there's a way to work this Rangers' Catcher trade into that mix? If the Sox sign Tex, then Lowell would be an extra part. If the Rangers are looking for a 3B, would it make sense to try and work a discounted Lowell into the trade?
Lowell, some cash, and Bowden for Teagarden, perhaps?
Would seem to kill two birds with one stone. Obviously only works if the Sox lock up Texiera, but it's worth considering if the Rangers are in the market for 3B. And based upon what I've heard, Teagarden seems to be the prospect the Sox should be aiming for at C.

As a Red Sox fan, I hope the Sox deal Buchholz for Teagarden. He seems to have the best overall upside, or whatever word you want to use. I also don't think Clay will ever be what he's been projected to be in Boston. He was HAMMERED in 2008 and gave no indication he could get out of the funk. I know he's young, but I feel like he's made for a small market. For those who want to point to the no-hitter, remember it was a September game vs. a AAA version of Baltimore's lineup and that game probably has made him think all he has to do is throw and hitters will miss or make outs. As he found out in 2008, it doesn't work that way. The Sox need a guy to step in and play every day behind the plate and I'm thinking Teagarden is the man for the job. I'd love for it to be Salty, but I'm not sure I trust him catching five or six days a week.

"Lowell, some cash, and Bowden for Teagarden, perhaps?"
Interesting proposal. Honestly though, it would need to be a good amount of cash, like $8M or so. And even then, the Rangers seem to really love Teagarden, and he's a great catching prospect. Maybe if the Red Sox included another decent prospect, say Oscar Tejeda, then the Rangers would let Teagarden go. That would really be a good move for Boston though, he would fill that spot for a while, and he's a very good defensive catcher and a solid hitter as well.

Buchholz's BABIP was extremely high in 2008 and his other numbers were great. Still going to be a very solid pitcher and maybe an ace barring injury.

Seems nice on the surface, but I just don't know that I believe the Rangers will trade Teagarden in a deal that doesn't net them a pitcher with ace upside like Buchholz...
Lowell would seem to be a decent stop-gap option for the Rangers to look into though, assuming Boston picked up part of the tab...

To get Teagarden, it won't be straight up for Buchholz. Teagarden will cost more. We could package him with some prospects or maybe Salty for Buchholz...and Lester. We get pitching and the Red Sox settle the 1st base and catching issues with the ability to go after Sabathia to keep him from the Yanks

You're not getting Buchholz plus some for Teagarden...
Why the hell wouldn't the Rangers trade Teagarden for Buchholz straight up?
Posted by: N41D | November 06, 2008 at 01:13 PM
Teagarden cost more than Buchholz? Please. Another Ranger homer who doesn't understand the vaule of young pitching.
Potential aces don't grow on trees. Texas would do well to get a one for one swap.

Hahahah. Right. The Sox wouldn't give up Lester and Buchholz together for Johan Santana, what makes you think a catching prospect is worth that? Buchholz has potential ace upside and Lester is a proven top of the rotation MLB pitcher.
Not to mention, the Sox aren't interested in Sabathia and don't have any first base issues. They already have one of the top three first basemen in the AL. The only first base issue arises if they land Teixeira and that's just a matter of having two of the top three AL first basemen.

i would prefer a catcher who has proven himself in the big leagues. if they are going to trade buchholz, add in a couple more prospects and go after martin in l.a.
i was thinking a lowell, buchholz, ? might get it done. i don't know what l.a. needs, hence the ?
i would prefer maybe lars anderson, but l.a. has loney.
all i know is i wouldn't also give up bowden or masterson, seeing the next group of red sox pitching prosects are 2-3 years away, and giving buchholz and bowden/masterson would leave them bare.
run on sentence...
i actually don't see the two teams "matching up".

Yeah, I don't think the Sox should do Buchholz for any of the Rangers catchers, so there's no chance at them adding someone else to the deal. I think when all is said and done, it's going to be something like Bowden for Salty or Ramirez, depending on how the Varitek situation pans out.
I also like the idea of Russ Martin and would have no problem putting together an impressive package for him, but I dont think he'll be moved.

I doubt Lowell will be any kind of "throw in" in any
deal and Boston has the deep pockets to hold onto him
for the 1st couple of months for him to prove he is
healthy. Lowell is not a "lazy" ballplayer, as we all
can name several examples of here.. He plays 100%
every day, GG, clutch hitter, power and also, strikes
out little for someone with power.
Those kinds of third basemen are rare, Florida might
have given him away, but I highly doubt that Boston
will.
Agreed on either Salty or Teagarden, Texas will want
another prospect (lower level is all they would get
however) other than Bowden, but I imagine Bucholz
alone could get Salty. Teagarden may require another
prospect (lower level) though Boston might also try
to expand the deal as well.

In case you all haven't read anything but Gammons, the Dodgers have said Martin is NOT available. Multiple times.
As for the Rangers trades, I wonder what they'd want in return for Hank Blalock. I'd rather see him play 3rd base than Casey Blake for the Dodgers.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | November 06, 2008 at 01:57 PM
Dodgersbruin: Everyone is always available...it's just a matter of how much you have to overpay :P
Besides GMs don't speak the truth half the time. In this case you're most likely right though...and trade discussions for Martin are probably a waste of time.
Posted by: gfulla | November 06, 2008 at 02:45 PM
yeah i said this yesterday that the martin rumor was a straight gammons boston pipedream.. i mean seriously that rumor is so bad.
but if it would happen it would require 2 top notch prospects plus 2 more lesser types.
martin
for
Buchholz
Anderson
Exposito(who is very far from the majors.)
maybe Chih-Hsien Chiang
but i would still want more, russel martin would go absolutely nuts in fenway, he would with out a doubt destroy there

Actually, as a Sox supporter, I would totally pull the trigger on that deal, dodgerblue. It's expensive, but it doesn't really hurt any necessities we have.

i really like that package, even though if we still got that i would be angry. i think the dodgers need to get martin a extension.
i love lars anderson. i honestly think if lowell cant play beginning next year, youk plays 3rd and anderson plays first.
typekey must die!!

Teagarden is who the sox should go after.. he proved he could really step his game up at the end of the season.. i would not like to see the sox part with masterson though.. he could become a huge 3 or 4 man in a couple years..
