Rockies Shopping Holliday, Atkins, Taveras

9:11pm: According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves are not interested in Taveras after all.

10:47am: According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post and Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News, the Rockies are shopping Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, and Willy Taveras.

Holliday, a Scott Boras client, is set to earn $13.5MM in 2009 before reaching free agency.  Ringolsby says the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Angels, Mets, and Phillies have shown interest. Renck has the Cardinals as a lurker.  The Nats may also be interested.  The Rockies will target young pitching in return.

Atkins is under team control for 2009 and 2010.  Ringolsby has the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Angels, Mets, Phillies, White Sox, and Twins as interested parties.  Renck sees the Indians as another possibility.

Taveras is also under team control through 2010.  Ringolsby says the Royals, Yankees, White Sox, and Braves are in on him, while Renck adds the Nationals.

Bussy days Tim? ;)

Of course the Royals would be in on Taveras. It makes little to no sense.

I know Dayton knows more than me, but I sure wish i could get his cliff notes on this year's offseason.

Holliday in RF or Atkins at DH could be cool but will cost too much prospects and they will be FA's too soon.

I really want the Rays to get Bradley and/or Butler then a reliever like Huston Street or Juan Cruz or dare I say, Brian Fuentes?

I somewhat understand the Atinks-to Red Sox idea, even though; how much better is he than Lowell? But Holliday to the Sox? They want to resign Bay and probably will, we are stuck with Drew, Jacoby & Coco in center. Maybe this will go crazy and trade Ortiz, DH Drew, Holliday in RF. Okay thats a little too crazy. Is Bowden/Bucholz/Masterson and a AAA prospect too little for 1 year of Holliday?

I predict Taveras goes to the White Sox for what I don't know it just seems like a good fit.

Taveras to the Braves? No thanks...even with 68 stolen bases, Blanco is a much better option for 2009...

I guess if the Red Sox want to get stupid they could sign Tex and trade for Holliday and they would have one heck of a bench and probably the best lineup in the game I just don't see it happening. I would prefer they go after CC and I would rather have them sign Tex than give up prospects for Holliday.

RaysFan-

I'm guessing Holliday would be a deal with Wade Davis or Jeremy Hellickson as the centerpiece. They're going to ask for young arms.

Davis and Jackson(although, Jackson + Coors = bad idea)/Sonnanstine for Holliday sounds like what the Rox would ask for, although I probably wouldn't do that deal (maybe another prospect if the arm is Jackson).

I'd consider Sonnanstine for Holliday straight up though, although I probably wouldn't do that deal in the end.

I really don't see Fuentes as a move Friedman would even remotely consider. Cruz maybe, but he is a Type A and will cost a draft pick.

Yankees shouldn't get involved, all of those players will require alot in return.

No, way Atkins, or Taveras to the White Sox, no way.

"I somewhat understand the Atinks-to Red Sox idea, even though; how much better is he than Lowell?"

Oh come on. Garrett Atkins isn't even close to being the player that Lowell is. Atkins isn't a distinctly better hitter than Lowell, despite hitting in Coors and in the NL West.

And then there is the fact that Lowell is one of the best defensive 3B in baseball, while Atkins is considered to be below average. Atkins simply isn't an option for the Red Sox.

And frankly, neither is Holliday. Bay is nearly as good a player to Holliday, if not his equal.

People don't seem to realize how good Bay is because of his year in 2007 and the fact that he played in Pittsburgh.

Bay's OPS+'s for 2004-2008: 132, 150, 138, 93, 134

Holliday's OPS+'s for 2004-2008: 103, 114, 137, 150, 140.

I'm sorry but that is not a very distinct difference between the two hitters, and considering that both are free agents after 2009, there is simply no reason at all for the Red Sox to be persuing Holliday. Teixeira makes wayyy more sense.

I could definitely see any of the teams that Tim listed going after Holliday. I like the Angels idea, maybe they could package together something like Howie Kendrick, Nick Adenhart and a lower level prospect. The Angels are going to need a big bopper for the middle of their lineup soon, when Vladimir Guerrero starts to slow down more than he has already.

I just don't see a great amount of teams being willing to give up top tier prospects for a guy who they may be able to sign without giving up talent in one year.

"No, way Atkins, or Taveras to the White Sox, no way."

I could see Atkins. White Sox don't have a replacement for 3B down on the farm, and I'm not sure if KW wants to go with Josh Fields at 3B.

Taveras adds speed to the team, something they need desperately.

"No, way Atkins, or Taveras to the White Sox, no way."

is that a wish??

In my opinion, Bowden/Bucholz/Masterson & a prospect is too much for one year of Holiday. I don't see the Sox being interested in him anyway - as you say, they are set in the OF for now. Plus, how does anyone know what kind of hitter he will be outside of Coors? I mean, if you check out his splits, his avg & OBP are just about as good, his power is down somewhat (but not alarmingly so). His production (RBI) are down, but that could just be the product of guys not getting on base in front of him outside of Coors. I just don't know how good he truly is.

"No, way Atkins, or Taveras to the White Sox, no way."

Like rex said they need the speed and he will be a much cheaper option than Pierre or Figgins who are the other names I expect they could aquire. Also in a dream world for the White sox they trade for Roberts but I just don'tsee them meeting the Orioles high demands.

By the way I'm not a White Sox fan.

I honestly think that the Red Sox and Yankees call about any big name player rumored to be available. Their payrolls are so high they can always explore any option. Even if thei interest is not "genuine" it's the "it never hurts to ask" method I guess.

In the end, I just think Holliday will stay put. Everyone seems to think he is unsignable, but I don't really believe that. And I don't see the Rockies getting what they really want, so it just won't happen. I can see Atkins and Taveras being traded though.

From a Braves fan perspective I do not want Taveras. Do we not already have Blanco a speedy OF. Do we not already have the up-and-coming Schaffer who is untouchable and compared to Grady Sizemore by ML scouts. Do we not already have Josh Anderson and depth with speedy OF? Last time I checked we need a POWER OF. Go get Garret Atkins and convert him to a LF. He has a manageable contract and I bet we can get him for a reasonable offer.

Holliday is comparable to Santana in that he's going to command a lot of money next off season and a lot of prospects this year. That probably limits the market for him a little, combine that with the fact he may or may not be a product of Coors (and he plays LF) and the list of Holliday suitors could be very very short.

I don't see the ChiSox and Rockies as a match. The only pitcher they have that the Rockies would be interested in is Floyd, and the Sox would be crazy to trade him for Atkins and Taveras.

Why on earth would the Mets be interested in Atkins? Unless they think he can play a cheap Corner OF.

I guess it doesn't hurt to inquire about Holliday either, but unless he's coming with an extension window, I have little interest in paying for a rental.

"I don't see the ChiSox and Rockies as a match. The only pitcher they have that the Rockies would be interested in is Floyd, and the Sox would be crazy to trade him for Atkins and Taveras."

Poreda, with another prospect?

"Go get Garret Atkins and convert him to a LF. He has a manageable contract and I bet we can get him for a reasonable offer. "

Atkins doesn't provide enough power to truly be a power bat at a corner OF spot. You need more power out of your corner OF.

"Poreda, with another prospect?"

Ok, I think I could see that, but the Rockies do need another starter for this year, and Poreda doesn't really fit that.

Taveras would be a good pickup for the Yankees. He's young, can play CF, and doesn't have a noodle arm. Don't know what it'd cost.

"Ok, I think I could see that, but the Rockies do need another starter for this year, and Poreda doesn't really fit that. "

Trade Holliday, shoot for 2010?

If Holliday is traded, 2010 should be the goal.

Holliday to the Mets (shallow farm system, can fill need through FA), Red Sox (too many OF), Yankees (shallow farm system, can pay $$, too many OF), or Nationals (well, Jim Bowden is the GM, so you don't know) realy don't make sense.

I have to agree with mkorpal. The Rockies will ask for too much and will eventually sign Holliday or keep him until the contract runs out. But yes Atkins and Taveras will go.

Honestly, giving up Poreda and then some for Atkins makes no sense for the White Sox.

Atkins is a solid hitter, but he's not much with the glove. Josh Fields easily has the upside that Atkins has, and is a much cheaper option. There's no reason for the Sox to give up talent for another corner position player.

Poreda should be untouchable unless the deal is for Roberts.

Poreda is untouchable and Will Not be traded from the White Sox.
I don't see the White Sox trading any of their best prospects.
Maybe Vazquez for Atkins? Probably not.

"Santana's deal was better because he got a 6 yr deal."

The Mets were trading for ONE year of Santana + the right to negotiate with him and extend him (which they would have had anyway had he stayed a Twin, as he would be a FA this year).

The guaranteed extension reduced competition for Santana, which reduced what he could get back in a trade.

Holliday's return will be greater than Santana's.

The problem I see is the Rockies will be looking for equal value to Holliday, who is arguably a top 20 player in the league. But they will be offered equal value - major contract/agent concerns. This will be no where near the value of Holliday. The only way I see him being traded is if he says there is no way he will re-sign, period.

On the other hand, Atkins has no place to play on the Rockies. Helton should be ready to take 1st base back by the spring, and Stewart is too good to play in the minors, so unless he figures out how to play 2nd, he is blocked. That, along with an increasing salary pretty much makes him a must trade.

Taveras is only being traded because we have too many options in center, and as the most expensive, he is the one most likely out of here. But it's certainly a luxury, and not a necessity.

"Poreda is untouchable and Will Not be traded from the White Sox. "

Watch him be traded for something.

I wasn't saying it was a good idea, I was just responding to a comment that a deal for Atkins couldn't be consisted without giving up a young starter at the MLB level.

I don't think he'll be traded. As of right now we have 1 open spot in our rotation and maybe 2 if we trade Vazquez.
The only way i see him being traded is if its for Figgins or another big time player. We are also trying to stay young not get older.
We have other chips to trade besides Poreda.

Given Dusty Baker's love affair with speedy CF leadoff hitters with low OBP, I certainly can imagine the Reds making a trade offer to the Rockies. The Reds have plenty of starting pitching to deal. It further makes sense given the Reds' OF need, though Jocketty has indicated a power RH bat is what is covetted.

"I don't think the Sox will pull the trigger and go after Atkins. The man is terrible away from Coors with no glove. Sounds like Josh Fields to me. I would like to acquire Taveras however. What exactly would the Rockies want in return? I'm guessing nothing of significance."

Lance Broadway has somewhat fallen out of favor and has struggled.

I don't see how Taveras is much of an improvement over Brian Anderson.

"As a Yanks fan, I’d like to see Atkins in the REAL pinstripes, not that Colorado bull"

Insulting other teams doesn't get you very far. This isn't third grade.

well i mean its true, the Yankees have the real pinstripes

Taveras? To the Yankees?
That's the day I unsubscribe to the YES Network.

I'd like to see the Phils get Atkins...We tryed to get him last year, but the Rockies weren't interested in trading him and we need a 3B that can hit...Come on Amaro let you first move be a big one.
