Ken Rosethal just updated his column to include the latest on Jack Wilson.
According to Rosenthal's source, the Tigers are one of several teams interested in trading for Wilson. The 30-year-old shortstop will earn just over $7MM next year and he has a club option for 2010.
Rosenthal adds that the Pirates would like to acquire Marlins catcher Matt Treanor and then trade him to Detroit along with Wilson.
Wilson could start at short for the Tigers, and Treanor could become their back-up catcher.

What does one think Treanor and Wilson would net? Obviously, the Bucs are targeting a "crown prize" if they're going to trade for Treanor, then package him with Wilson to get something.

the best part of this "proposed" trade would be misty may.

I had no idea Jack Wilson was worth 7 million. I wouldn't pay him 1/3 that price, terrible.

Come on Lugo is just sitting there, make an offer.

Wilson(ss), Ronny Paulino(C), and Tyler Yates(RP) to the Tigers for Freddy Dolsi(RP) and Armando Galarraga (SP)?
What do you think?

The Pittsburgh Pirates: without Jack Wilson trade rumors, what would people talk about?
Apparently the Pirates feel that the further Wilson's fluky 04' season the more they'll get in return for him. Or something?
I've never uderstood this Jack Wilson Fetish. Are there teams that feel that they need to get a bad contract on thier team to fit in with all the other teams?

"Are there teams that feel that they need to get a bad contract on thier team to fit in with all the other teams?"
They already have someone that fits in that category named Dontrelle Willis making $10 million in 2009 and $12 million in 2010. And they also have Gary Sheffield at $14 million.
Posted by: BravesRed | November 22, 2008 at 01:08 PM
I just want to ask in this day and age with these contracts is 7MM dollars for an average bat and an above average glove really a bad contract. He is as good as Lugo who makes over 10MM if I'm not mistaken.

No way! We can't give up our best SP and one of our more reliable RP for a bunch of junk. Absolutely not.

I like the idea, but here's what I would offer: One of the three of Clevlen, Thomas, and Raburn; Mike Hessman, and Dane Sardinha in exchange for Wilson, Treanor, and minor-league lefty Tony Watson.
Posted by: icordonbleu | November 22, 2008 at 03:44 PM
icordonbleu,
We don't need outfielders or a 3B. We need pitching, I expect that we are trying to get Galarraga and that is probably why the deal is not done I think in the end it could be Jack, Treanor and another minor league arm perhaps Watson as you suggested. But I think Galarraga is a must from Detroit or we move on.

It always amazes me how such run of the mill mediocre overpaid players like Jack Wilson have interested parties?
The Pirates should remain stuck with him.
Posted by: MikeClarke | November 22, 2008 at 04:06 PM
Ignoring the fact that Dane Sardinha is garbage filler, he is no longer in the Tigers organization. He was outrighted after the season and elected to become a free agent.
If the Tigers were going to trade Gallaraga, and thats a big if, it would be for something of value.
Posted by: walt | November 22, 2008 at 04:11 PM
Why trade Galarraga? He was the best pitcher for the Tigers last year. I'd be kind of curious to see the Pirates' interest in Jeremy Bonderman, Zach Miner, or both. A Bonderman and Miner deal for Treanor, Wilson, and a minor league pitcher or two seems to benefit both sides.
Thoughts?

I can understand that Wilson is still marginally better than Lugo, 2 years younger and and makes 2 million less per season. Still, his fielding is really not that much better, he is starting to break down and the Pirates are probably not going to pick up any of his salary and the Tigers are going to have to give something up for Wilson, whereas with Lugo they could dump off a Willis whom is another salary problem they already have and get about the same thing at SS they will get with Wilson by acquiring Lugo.
Is there something else wrong with Lugo? We all know he needs a change of scenery, but the Tigers considering Wilson over swapping bad contracts for Lugo just sounds weird.

I'm sick of all the venom towards Jack Wilson. It's not his fault the Pirates have to overpay guys to stay on the team, but they're trading him anyways lol.
Sure, he won't hit for any power, and his BA won't be much higher than .270, but he'll continue to play good defense and be a GREAT teammate. He's had nothing but love for playing in Pittsburgh regardless of their record.
I don't know much about the Tigers prospects, but the Bucs are pretty solid at 1B, 3B, and OF, so pitching and 2B would be nice to pick up. I'd start with Bonderman and try to pick up Zach Miner if that doesn't work. I would be welcome to trading Matt Capps or John Grabow in a Bonderman package.

MY GOD! if i hear someone say jack wilson is just an above average glove i might throw up. now i personally want the pirates to rid themselves of wilson but i believe the monetary effect of 7 million on a 40 million payroll is a lot different than 7 million on a 100+ million payroll. yes, he's no hanley ramirez offensively, but a .270 average is nowhere near terrible.
Posted by: yokedog22 | November 22, 2008 at 06:30 PM
Ramirez is better on offense, but Wilson is better on defense.
Posted by: BravesRed | November 22, 2008 at 06:41 PM
Either Zach Miner or Bonderman would be nice. If Huntington can get Galarraga, Drombowski should be fired. Although Armando is due up for some regression, he's still a fine pitcher. And, improving the Tigers defense will help him.
Seriously. Jack Wilson doesn't suck. Jack Wilson is Orlando Cabrera with better defense. Orlando Cabrera will easily get 10MM++ on the open market

What would the marlins really gain from this trade? treanor is a usable catcher and we need defense
Posted by: marlinsforlife | November 22, 2008 at 06:56 PM
Jack Wilson is a very interesting player. Is he worth $7 million a year? In today's market he might be. A poor hitter, he averages about 8 homers and 50 RBIs a season. He is a GREAT fielder however. I would love to see him in a Tigers uniform. They have been trying to get him since 2006 when they actually had a farm system. I'm not sure who the Pirates would want now. Maybe Danny Worth and Zach Miner is enough?

Jack Wilson, according to the last metrics that I saw, is slightly above average on defense and below average offensively with regard to runs saved or runs created vs league avg SS. His numbers were +3.9 and -7.9 respectively.
Posted by: walt | November 22, 2008 at 08:38 PM
walt, can you compare those numbers to the numbers of Edgar Renteria in 2008? Thanks.
Posted by: Rob M. | November 22, 2008 at 08:43 PM
Rent-a-wreck's numbers were -2.1 -3.7
Below is a link to the source of the numbers I am quoting. It seems to be a decent system of evaluating whether a guy's offensive numbers make up for his defensive numbers or the reverse.

It must stink to be the 3rd wheel in these trades. Especially when you have all this great young talent to trade. You Marlins fans are a tough bunch.
