« Olney On Braves, Peavy, Burnett | Main | GM Trade History - Doug Melvin »
Tigers president/GM Dave Dombrowski says he isn't looking to trade Magglio Ordonez, despite speculation that the right fielder is available.
Dombrowski said he hasn't made a single call about Ordonez.
"We're not looking to trade Magglio," Dombrowski said. "He's one of the best hitters in baseball and an important part of our club."
As MLB.com's Jason Beck rightly points out, this doesn't mean the Tigers won't listen to offers for Ordonez.
In September, the Detroit Free Press' John Paul Morosi said the Tigers would need to trade Ordonez if they were going to fill their many needs. The Tigers are in the market for a shortstop to replace Edgar Renteria, and could also use an upgrade in the rotation, at closer and at catcher. Considering their stated intention not to raise payroll, it's hard to see how Detroit is going to do all that, or even some of that, without trading Ordonez. But I guess that's why they pay Dombrowski the big bucks.

Magglio is a right fielder...
Posted by: baseball52 | November 15, 2008 at 02:47 PM
He has been for as long as I can remember. That's not to say that he couldn't play LF if needed.

Ordonez to the Angels for Aybar/Wood, Napoli/Mathis, bullpen arm + A/AA prospect?
That might be too much (or not enough), but if the Angels don't resign Texiera, they need another good bat in the lineup.

Right field...fixed it. Thanks for keeping me honest.
Posted by: Coley Ward | November 15, 2008 at 02:58 PM
And, while we're speculating wildly, I'll throw in my two cents...I don't think the Tigers would get much in return for Ordonez beyond salary cap relief.

Honest mistake, Coley ... I think if the Tigers were to trade him they should do it now, because I think they would be able to get something of value, considering he is still putting up dominant numbers
Posted by: xjoe87x | November 15, 2008 at 03:05 PM
Come on...trade him to the Reds...listen to this deal...
Magglio
WIllis
Zumaya
Bailey
Cordero
Roeneke
Malony
Stubbs
Valkia
could work for both sides. think about it.
Reds would get a right fielder...a left handed starter with upside...and a set-up man or closer options...reds shed off a decent amount of salary off int he trade, but the Tigers still save money, get younger, fill needs, and are getting a lot.
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | November 15, 2008 at 03:05 PM
ok looking back at that....Reds would probably have to throw in a few more prospects...i wonder if they would want Hanigan as a throw in? Im guessing they would want Duran and Lokzar which would still be a lot...but i think id still pull the trigger on it
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | November 15, 2008 at 03:07 PM
Do the Reds really have the money to take on both Magglio's and Dontrelle's contracts? I think they can find much better uses of their money and prospects.
I think the Braves could be a match with the Tigers. Maybe a deal built around Tyler Flowers with a throw in or two from Brandon Jones, Lillibridge, Morton, Reyes, Acosta, Boyer, etc.
If the Braves were to include Flowers they'd probably look for Detroit to pick up a portion of the money owed Maggs as well. Not a bunch, but maybe a 2-3 million a year.

Considering that Willis has a horrible contract and would get destroyed in the GABP and that Zumaya can't stay healthy, and who knows how much his stuff has been effected by the injuries I think it would be a horrible deal for the Reds.
The Reds would be giving up four top prospects, a fifth useable one, and their closer for really one player that could help them.

Personally, I dont see how trading their best hitter would be any way to do much of anything productive for the tigers.
Its a stupid rumour, period.
Posted by: xethicx | November 15, 2008 at 03:19 PM
I wouldn't exactly call it a stupid rumor. The Tigers have a lot of holes to fill and very little money to fill them. While a trade of Ordonez is unlikely, it certainly isn't outside the realm of possibility. Would it really be unproductive to deal Maggs if they got a few guys who could help now in return, along with ~15 million to spend upgrading the team through free agency?
Posted by: nixa37 | November 15, 2008 at 03:29 PM
cubsgm,
The Tigers have already said they aren't adding to the payroll. You probably haven't heard them in on Furcal because they don't have the ~10 million it will take to sign him.
Posted by: nixa37 | November 15, 2008 at 04:15 PM
If the Tigers, who scored almost as many runs as the Red Sox, got someone like Furcal, they'll be fine. Inge is as good as IRod, who now is a hollow stick.
The big question is-- what's going to happen w/their pitching? Will Verlander and Robertson NOT suck. Will Bonderman come back strong? And can they finally find someone to work in Chicken Man's spot since the pixie dust has clearly worn off?

Ordonez to the Angels for Aybar/Wood, Napoli/Mathis, bullpen arm + A/AA prospect?
That might be too much (or not enough), but if the Angels don't resign Texiera, they need another good bat in the lineup.
You kidding? Taking on another old outfielder while giving up FOUR players and getting that contract?
Let's be realistic in what we think we can get for our players, huh ?
Posted by: SanDiegoGuy | November 15, 2008 at 05:21 PM
There is NO way the Angels put together an offer like that for Ordonez. You do realize that he will be making approx $20m/year for the duration of his contract?
Trading Ordonez is salary relief with maybe a prospect or two. Certainly not proven ML talent or top shelf prospects.

hey tigers fans,
how about Jason Donald, JA Happ and another minor leaguer for Magglio?
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 15, 2008 at 05:37 PM
For shortstop why dont they approach someone of a little less value that wont hurt them defensively like Izturis, Cora, Everett or Uribe.
Or hrmmm hows about release Gary Sheffield, get Furcal and then get a cheap DH like Sexson, Branyan, Cliff Floyd etc.
Getting rid of Sheffield would also make for less headaches and tippy toeing all around for the players and coaches.
Posted by: xethicx | November 15, 2008 at 05:42 PM
I've been suggesting that we release Sheffield for months, and simply replace him with Jeff Larish, a man within the system and sign someone... anyone to play SS.
Posted by: TigerFan54 | November 15, 2008 at 06:01 PM
However... philsWSchamps, pick a minor leaguer and we might have a deal.
Posted by: TigerFan54 | November 15, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Philly: Magglio Ordonez
Tigers: Jason Donald, JA Happ and Ryan Madson
Posted by: Phinally08 | November 15, 2008 at 06:42 PM
Mags isn't that old....34 and he has proven to be better and more durable, than any of the other old OFs that the Angels have.
He is making $15M guaranteed, and up to $17M. If, however, he does get injured/does not meet AB requirements, they can buy out his contract for cheap.
Now, realistically, if the Tigers want to move him and get a couple of MLB ready players, they would have to pick up around $10M of his salary per year (void if he is bought out). That would still provide ~$7M of payroll relief.
Now tell me sports fans, does 4 years of Manny at $25M guaranteed per year or Mags at 3 years for $7M-$10M per year sound better? Keep in mind that at the end of their contracts, Manny will be 42 and Mags will be 37. Mags does not produce like Manny does, but he isn't that far off.
I have no idea why Sheff is wasting a roster spot. Eat his salary and open up a roster spot for Larish, he will provide the same pop with a better average and won't be a distraction in the clubhouse.

"Philly: Magglio Ordonez
Tigers: Jason Donald, JA Happ and Ryan Madson"
Done deal. Steal for Tigers, especially if they're not eating any money.
I do think the Tigers need to trade Magglio, eating a little bit of salary. If I was a Tigers fan, I'd be looking at guys like Wade Davis and Jeremy Hellickson in awe. Do what the Rays want to get one of those guys.

Are you serious? Why not hand them lidge too so they can have a solid bullpen. Maybe we could pay his salary for them too. By another minor leaguer I meant someone like Julian Sampson or Antonio bastardo. Not someone on the cusp of becoming one of the top setup men
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 15, 2008 at 07:13 PM
According to Cots Mags salary looks like:
09 - $18m
10 - $18m (guaranteed if healthy)
11 - $15m (guaranteed if healthy)
That's a 3/51 deal. He will be 37 when the 3 years expire.
This year Mags posted an 870 OPS. The year before he was crazy good. Years previous he was a solid 850-900 OPS guy.
So, the question is would you rather have Dunn (901 OPS and 28YO) for $15m/year and the only talent cost is draft picks OR Mags at $18m/year + a high price in prospects?
Posted by: bjsguess | November 15, 2008 at 07:49 PM
Madson has only one year left and his agent is Scott Boras, so why don't we trade him while he has value and then sign Juan Cruz.
Posted by: Phinally08 | November 15, 2008 at 08:25 PM
Phinally,
i'm aware of who his agent is and that after next year he may be gone. He should be on we're targeting now to resign to buy out a year or two of free agent years. If he's got closing on his mind and we can't sign him longer than your package gives up wayy too much for a guy who is older and has a very expensive contract. make the deal Madson and happ, or save madson for another deal down the road. You don't take away the strength of your team that helped you win the WS (a shut down 8th and 9th innings).
Anyway I'd rather have Manny for a little more $$$ and not give up anyone. Manny i believe would sign a 3 year 75 million dollar contact to come to play for Charlie. Then when he's done, Taylor can be ready and step in. And you can trade Donald and or Madson for starting pitching later on.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 15, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Madson ain't going anywhere. Even if they don't end up resigning him, no reason not to get another year of great value out of him and collect two picks next offseason
