« Heyman's Latest: Holliday, Bradley, Hudson | Main | Braves Offer Tazawa Major League Contract »
8:04pm: Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press quotes Scott Boras as saying it's highly unlikely Ordonez will be traded. Ordonez can block trades to all but ten teams.
1:10pm: Jon Paul Morosi talked to Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski, who says there will not be a significant difference in payroll this year. I calculated they'd be over $120MM with the current group, leaving roughly $14MM to spend this winter barring other moves. The needs: catcher, shortstop, bullpen.
Dombrowski will need to be creative, and trading for an affordable closer makes sense. The Tigers are rumored to be in on Khalil Greene as a possible shortstop solution. The catcher market is bleak, so don't expect much there.
As far as trading Magglio Ordonez, Morosi says the Tigers may consider it if they can fill multiple holes with a trade.

Tim...do you think a 3-team trade would work here
Padres get:
Escobar and prospects from Braves
Braves get:
Ordonez and Peavy
Tigers get:
Greene and prospect from Braves

Magglio Ordonez for BJ Ryan, Adam Lind, Ricky Romero, and Brian Jeroloman. Tigers get a cheap, controllable LF bat, the dominant closer they need, and pick up a former first round pick SP prospect and a C prospect who is known for his defensive prowess and puts up decent OBPs. The Jays fill a major hole, desperate for power from a corner OF spot. Thoughts?

Angels send:
Mathis, izturis
Tigers Send:
Ordonez

There is no way this would work...the braves wouldnt be able to get peavy and ordonez when the best player they have to give up is yunel escobar

Rafael Soriano, Clint Sammons and Martin Prado for Magglio.

This one also wouldnt work beacuse Adam Lind is a big part of the blue jays future and Romero is probably the most valuable young pitcher in the blue jays organization

...and becuase the Tigers need a catcher NOW, not a prospect.

Magglio is not going to be expensive, when the tigers are cutting payroll. The team who recieves Magglio is going to pay about 15 million a year, anyways if the tigers even take the 3 mills to pay

mags is not going to expensive at all. i could see a ss propsect and pitcher getting it done for him as long you the team getting him eats his contract. i have a feeling mags is going to be on the phillies or braves next year. both have expendable ss and pitching. it depends on what ss the tigers like more. he would be a perfect fit to replace burrell. and the braves need of help

If the Braves offered Mike Gonzalez, Charlie Morton, and Lillibridge, they could probably get the Tigers to eat 5 mil or so of Maggs' contract for this year. Tigers get a proven closer, young SP, and potential starting SS, Braves get the impact LF bat they crave.

And Scott Boras seriously wants people to believe the Tigers are a potential suitor for Varitek? Please.

I mags would be a better option in LF than other FA (Dunn and Burrell). I would sacrifice Lilli, Sammons, and a pitcher (Morton, or one of the other comparables).

I certainly hope they keep Maggs. If they get rid of him and keep that loud mouth crybaby Sheffield I may not watch them at all next year.

Magglio and 15mm (5 per year) to PHI for Jason Donald, JA Happ, and Travis D'arnaud?

Wayne gomes: Magglio and 15mm (5 per year) to PHI for Jason Donald, JA Happ, and Travis D'arnaud?"
i am a life long tiger fan. i would have to say i would make that trade

Whatever the offer is it won't be much. Maggs could easily slip into negative value this upcoming year.

i read on the detroit free press website, that the tigers are looking at JJ Putz as a possible trade candidate. what if they sent Maggs, Robertson and Rodney to seattle for Putz, Johjima, and Bedard? that would give them the closer, a catcher and a possible starter.

All right, well let's get Dombrowski on the horn.
Maybe you guys could throw a utility IF back as well who could play SS in an emergency, like Santiago

highVoltage-
The difference is that Mags has trade value, Sheff has none. The Tigers couldn't give away Sheff for a bag of balls and a stick of gum.
bjsguess-
Mags value will not fall. He is a proven hitter with an affordable contract compared to other players at his level. There will always be teams intrested in guys like that.

Yes Maggs is going to be expensive. Who is going to fill that gap and going to be as good as him.......The Tigers don't want a bunch of average players. The Tigers want quality for quantatiy, and they are not looking for prospects as they are not in rebuilding mode.
