« Kasten: No Offer Yet For Teixeira | Main | Tigers Interested In Beimel »
Now that the Cubs have essentially taken themselves out of the Jake Peavy sweepstakes by signing free agent pitcher Ryan Dempster, Padres GM Kevin Towers is looking for a new trade partner.
MLB.com's Corey Brock reminds us that "Towers indicated Monday that the Cubs were essentially his sole focus as far as discussions to trade Peavy, the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner."
Now the Padres may try to rekindle talks with the Braves:
Towers wouldn't rule out the possibility of circling back around to the Braves, who last week said they were moving on after a deal couldn't be reached.
"You never know ... we certainly made more progress with them," Towers said. "We were able to ID and agree upon a large part of the package."
The Braves have always been the logical landing place for Peavy. Atlanta GM Frank Wren said recently that he had given up on trading for the Padres ace.
Coley Ward writes for Umpbump.com and can be reached here.

Seriously, you Braves fans need to get real.
TOWERS REJECTED THE TRADE OFFER, NOT WREN!!!!!!!
It wasn't until this that Wren pulled out of negotiations. Now,when Wren realizes that Lowe and Burnett are going to sign elsewhere, talks will resume. You guys need to understand that after the top FA pitchers sign (not with the Braves since BOS and NY are involved) the Padres WILL GAIN LEVERAGE. They will have the only stud pitcher on the market.
The reported package is not going to be enough. You can't get a CY Young winner in his prime, under a reasonable contract (that will look GREAT in a month or so) for a pile of beans. I'm sorry to break it to you Atlanta, but it just doesn't work that way. Escobar is a nice SS, but probably not all-star caliber. Hernandez has upside but hasn't shown it above A-ball, so there isn't a lot of probability there. Morton is probably a back-end type and Boyer plain sucks. It's going to take one of two things: 1) working a deal around Hanson (let the insults fly ATL!) or 2)sweetening the original offer, maybe include Flowers.
Remember, Towers has a great trade resume as GM - he isn't going to take a bogus offer, like what Wren offered before. He could always wait until the trade deadline to deal Jake.
Wren will come back. This isn't done by a long shot.

Everybody's looking at this like Towers has lost all leverage. That's crap.
The Braves as they stand today are nowhere near winning their division, and they need pitching bad. They turned away from Peavy to focus on FA's, but now they're realizing the FA market is going to be brutal and they may be priced out for the top guys (2 of Burnett, Lowe, CC and Sheets are going to NY, one is going to the Red Sox, and the last one is up for grabs with the Angels and the Dodgers in need of pitchers). Good luck to the Braves on signing FA's.
They'll be left with 2 options: go for a lesser pitcher and finish 3rd or 4th in their division, or improve their offer for Peavy.
Towers is playing this right. Good SP's are a rare commodity, and always in high demand. Once the dust settles after all the big FA's are signed, someone is going to get desperate and throw a ridiculous deal at SD. That's what Towers is waiting for.

whoever said that the Ted is a hitter's park is a moron.
Atlanta, the team that was built on pitching, did not build a hitter's park.
Escobar had a tough year 'cause he was hurt. And a tough year when his stats are:
.288/.366/.766
as a 26 year old SS who is under team control for another 4 years is a tough year?
ok, some of you are just nuts.

actually, Towers kept agreeing for the trade and then wanted to have Flowers included instead of Hernandez.
As you can see in the AFL, we're NOT getting rid of Flowers.
Wren then said "This is the deal, take it or leave it."
Towers said "ok, we leave it."
The Braves, and i'm a fan, are 3 years away and as soon as we realize it and rebuild around McCann, Escobar and JJ, we'll get there sooner.
Hey Yankees fans...would you give us A. Jackson, Hughes and Joba for Chipper?

Tom,
In your scenario, who exactly are the Braves bidding against? The Yankees are out because they signed 2 of the top FA SP. The Cubs are out because they signed Dempster. At least one of the LA teams is out of the bidding according to you if the Braves miss out on the last of the 4 big names.
The Braves aren't going to panic and throw out a ridiculous offer just because they miss on the big name FA starters. There are still a bunch of lesser SP on the FA market and available via trade. I also think at that point the Braves could seriously consider just rebuilding in 2009 with an eye toward 2010 when Hudson will be back and the Braves top prospect should be more ready to produce at the MLB level.

The only reason that Frank Wren told the Padres that the deal was off was to get the Cubs out the way. In the time it took for the Cubs to re-sign Dempster, the Braves could have traded for Peavy 10 times. Now its Wrens turn to haggle with Towers!
