« Mets Rumors: K-Rod, Fuentes, Vazquez, Garland | Main | Yanks Have Not Set Deadline For C.C. »
A note from Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:
I've been told it’s highly doubtful the Twins will sign a Type A free agent, which would cost them their first-round draft pick next June, though they have checked into some of the Type A relievers and are in a “Never say never” mode.
The Twins own the #23 pick in next year's draft. Players such as Orlando Cabrera, Doug Brocail, Juan Cruz, Darren Oliver, and Russ Springer would presumably cost them that pick.
Christensen also notes that the Twins had strong interest in Jeremy Affeldt and scouted Dayan Viciedo.

Not that the Twins usually target type A free agents anyway...
If the price is right on a player like Cabrera, I don't think the loss of a pick will be the deciding factor. However, if Blake signs with the Twins, I can see them moving around the pieces they have already and calling it good with the infield, which would render Cabrera's type A status moot.

This is not news to Twins fans. The Twins are rarely interested in any free agents over $5.99/lb. They've probably never have signed a Type A in their history, and I'm hard-pressed to think of a B either. But I think Bill Smith may try to do something at SS this winter via trade, where there's less open market turbulence, more control of cost.

If the Twins gave up their first round pick to sign Russ Springer, then someone should beat Bill Smith in the face. First round picks can be huge for low budget teams like Minnesota, you don't just throw those away. Guys like Ben Revere and Aaron Hicks could end up being big time contributors for the Twins, I'm sure they'd rather have guys like that then Russ Springer.

None of these guys is worth surrendering their #1 pick!
And, Cabrera will never wear a Twins uniform - Gardenhire doesn't want his attitude and his problems getting along with Guillen.

"...and scouted Dayan Viciedo."
Interesting. Never heard much about that. I wonder how serious the interest was?

I doubt they were ever seriously involved into trying to get Viciedo. All they did was scout, doesn't mean they were going to be serious players into trying to get the kid. I'm sure most teams at least scouted the kid.

It's more like this for the Twins:
Terry Ryan: I've never heard of half of these guys and
the ones I do know are way past their prime.
Dave St. Peter: Most of these guys never had a prime.
Ron Gardenhire: This guy here is dead.
Bill Smith: Cross him off then.
