According to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, the Yankees signed sinkerballer Sergio Mitre to a split contract. The Major League portion is for $1.25MM, and there's a club option for 2010. Eight teams had shown interest. Mitre may not be ready until midseason following July Tommy John surgery.

never ceases to amaze me...

It's the kind of no risk acquisition that teams need to make. Wish the O's had picked him up.

Not a bad signing at all. I like it

Dang...hoping the Cubs picked him back up.

I like this signing by the Yankees because like everyone will say it's low risk high reward and adds depth in case they have injury like this year... hope we keep signing pitchers like this after the big name guys are obtained(sabathia and burnett) and the offseason is about to end so spring training would have a lot of competition which always brings out the better in people...great signing cashman

Smart move on Cashman's part. The dude's career numbers are pretty crap, but at that salary in this day and age, you take the risk and hope he can give you a couple of starts where he keeps you in the game.

Nothing to special but a nice signing. $1.25 million is nothing for a guy that has shown some potential.
A nice start to the offseason for the Yanks.

like this signing alot as we learned last year you can never have enough starting pitching. Also don't know if there is much truth in this but I have heard sinker ballers who return from Tommy John surgery come back stronger because it adds a couple mph on the sinker.

Obsessions they are basically going off of his pre-all star break 2007, where he was one of the best pitchers in baseball. Like the article says he fatigued and his numbers ballooned in September and then he hurt himself.
Definitely worth a shot.

Id rather have him start than Ponson if the Yankees get injuries to their staff like last year.

meant this year.

GREAT PICK UP BY THE YANKS. A GOOD PLAYER at an affordable price. but the only thing that i dont like that he wont be with the team at the start of the year.

Sergio Mitre is not a good player.

Zig:
Is says he will be available by June 09 and we have an option for 2010 as well.
The guy's major league totals suck but he's out up decent numbers in the minors. Maybe he has a connection with some in the Yanks organization who feels they can bring something better out of him. Low risk vs higher rewards?

With a name like that, Im shicked the Mets didnt pick him up.
Posted by: clarknaddison | November 03, 2008 at 05:24 PM
good insurance....deff dont want to see any more of Ponson.
Posted by: clarknaddison | November 03, 2008 at 05:24 PM
I also like this move because he will now be back with Joe Girardi (surprised no body mentioned it) and he might feel more comfortable because of this...

The Mets already have a Latino Sinkerballer. Miguel Pelfo.
I cant wait to hear all the Latino Mets complaints when the Mets sign a closer. Considering the best 2 available are KRod and Fuentes, its not like Mets management has a great non-latino option.

Tommy John surgery doesn't add anything.. it seems like it does because they throw harder then they were before they had the surgery -- but they were only throwing that hard in the first place because they were hurt... Typically you'll see a few mph drop off and then sometime in the near future they need the surgery..

Props to Cashman. If he successfully recovers from TJ he'd be a nice backup option ( def. better than Ponson at least... )

This sounds obvious but if Mitre can keep his sinker down, he's a solid innings eater. He has very little margin for error given how hittable he is but when he's got command of his sinker, he's an effective pitcher.
It's a good no-risk pickup but I don't see the Yankees netting a return on their investment this year. Coming off Tommy John surgery, I don't see him being sharp soon enough to be effective and as I've said twice already, without command, Mitre is far too hittable.

Whats with the yankees and signing pitchers coming off TJ surgery?
Although im all for sinker pitchers.
