« Twins To Avoid Type A Free Agents? | Main | Rockies Have Not Contacted Ohman »
SI.com's Jon Heyman talked to someone familiar with the Yankees' thinking, and he says the Yankees have not set a deadline on their six-year, $140MM offer to C.C. Sabathia. Hank Steinbrenner said the offer wouldn't be there forever, but that doesn't mean it will be pulled anytime soon.

day of denials indeed

Hank just talks to appease the media but its pretty clear he does not make the decisions.

why would the set a deadline anyway? They're desperate for starting pitching, especially with Mussina retiring.
The question is IF that desperation will cause them to increase their offer if anyone on the West Coast comes close.
I don't see how this log-jam gets broken. THe only way for it to happen is to say for example someone other than the Dodgers gets Manny so they overspend to try to get CC as a difference maker.

That's BS. Now I'm going to have to keep clicking refresh on this site until something goes down.

I thought Hal was the one who mentioned the deadline?
Posted by: jimmywallaby | November 24, 2008 at 02:08 PM
it was hal.
this is classic backtracking. heyman's report might as well have said 'howard rubenstein called me to say 'tell cc we're sorry. we will be here any time he decides to sign.'

jimmywallaby, I'm with you. I'm pretty sure it was Hal Steinbrenner who said their offer had a deadline.

They can always send the $140 million on Juan Uribe. It seems more practical.

Oh the wonderful Yankee drama. Self-inflicted of course. "We said it, but we didn't mean it, but since we said it we'll keep talking about it like it's important to everyone."

CC; our offer won't be around forever, but take your time, no rush.
Are the Steinbrenner brothers bipolar?

Flashback to 2007 off-season:
If A-Rod opts out of his contract he won't be a Yankee.
If A-Rod is resigned it won't be through his age 42 year.
If A-Rod doesn't accept our offer by such and such a date the offer will get pulled.
Seriously, is there any reason to believe that Hank/Hal are serious? It's like the worst bluff ever. As an agent I wouldn't consider their threats anything more than that - just threats.

For everyone commenting-
This really is not anything new. What was said to begin with was the offer was not going to be there forever. Soon after, typical anti-Yankees bashing started. Seriously, I can not stress this enough.
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE YOU COMMENT.

What HAL said was that the deal wouldn't be out there forever but he never said that they SET a deadline within the language of the deal nor verbally mentioned it to CC's agent.
So far, accoring to reports, the only deals tendered to CC so far is from the Yanks and Brew's. I'm not worried that he hasn't accepted anything yet.

bjsguess:
Keep in mind that the Yanks DID pull their offer back from Arod. It wasn't until he came crawling back to the Yanks thru mutual friends and spoke directly to Hank/Hal/Lerner w/o Boras that they hammered out a deal. And also the deal they worked out, from what I read, was vastly different from the one they originally were planning to offer. A lot of that deal is incentive/marketing driven.
