« No Sammy In Miami, Texas Or Cincy? | Main | Giants Will Listen To Proposals Involving Sanchez »
Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle spoke with Houston Astros general manager Ed Wade about the possibilities of signing one of the "big-time free agents" anytime soon, to which Wade said no.
That includes starting pitcher Ben Sheets. Wade laughed when McTaggart asked if he expected Sheets to be under the Christmas Tree.

Nothing new. They've been pimping Aaron Boone; that's how pathetic this offseason has been.

I actually think Hampton will have a good season for Houstan. If he pitches how he did at the end of last year he'll do alright.

The market is shrinking for Sheets. He is destined to be a Ranger.

Mike Hampton will have a solid year this year IF healthy, i believe. I also expect him to pitch somewhere close to where he was at the end of the year for Atlanta. Aaron Boone was a solid signing for the Astros, he has somewhat of an upside do to the fact that he has been known to come through in the clutch. 2003 Red Sox Fans? But its sad to see the Astros in such a bad shape considering that they have a strong offense when Michael Bourn gets on base and lets not forget they also have one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball in Roy Oswalt. The market for Ben Sheets is dropping and it will also drop for Pettitte. Therefore i see the Astros making at least one more move, if not then they are basically giving up on this season and will have no shot at catching the Cubs.

Um, yeah. Only an idiot thinks owners will treat baseball as everything but a business, but, unfortunately, Uncle Drayton treats it ONLY as a business. What he doesn't realize is that turning the 'Stros into a small-market team like Pittsburgh or Kansas City will make him the most-hated man in Houston. The Yankees and Red Sox have both learned that if you spend the money and put a winner on the field, the money takes care of itself. We're in for a long stretch of sub-par baseball in Houston. Drayton needs to loosen the leash and let the baseball people (not Tal) run the team. God help the Astros.

Drayton has the money, He is hiding it. He needs to take the risk on Sheets and go sign him, Sheets and Oswalt with Hampton and Wandy leaves a 5th spot for maybe Chris Sampson. Astros are not getting any better even though they are "rebuilding" but when Berkman and Oswalt's and Lee's contracts start to pop up there will be no money and no hope and we will be rebuilding for like 10 years. The Marlins got no where when they rebuilt and got rid of Beckett and D-Train and now Cabrera and that is how the Astros are looking we need to spend money and take the risk. You have already risked on age with Boone Hampton and Hawkins. So why not get a young guy like Sheets or at LEAST Wolf and get some "younger" talent.
