« Braves Preparing Five-Year Offer For Burnett | Main | Odds and Ends: Griffey, Springer, Hoffman »
According to Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle, the Astros have spoken to the agents for free agent catchers Gregg Zaun and Dave Ross. Ross we knew about, but Zaun is a new name. The Tigers have been linked to Zaun as well. It's also known that Paul Bako would be interested in playing for Houston.
McTaggart also mentions in the article that pitcher Brandon Backe is a non-tender candidate (that deadline is December 12th; we'll see a many additional players enter the free agent pool).

I would like Zaun back, and since he already has played here in Houston... Plus he is another player that like playing here in Houston... Either or would be fine, just as long as Towles gets more minor league experience and work on hitting.

Since October I've been pulling for the Astros to sign Zaun. It's a perfect fit. He knows the team, he'll get good playing time, and would probably be a decent hitter in Minute Maid Park. Astros meanwhile get a cheap, short term veteran who is a good enough catcher to get a good amount of starts but at the same time wouldn't be blocking J.R. Towles if he shows he is ready. Ross I would absolutely hate. I want nothing to do with him.

Paul Bako would be interested to play anywhere. Not very good.

My money is on Zaun for a one year deal.

haha I hate it when Tim refers to Ross as "Dave" Ross... I think he may be the only person that I know of that calls him that. I am Reds fan and he was always referred to as David Ross. Anyway, Ross could help the Astros behind the plate because he calls a pretty good game. He also provides some pop at times but he is EXTREMELY streaky..

Just to shoot some holes in this lead, I can't see how the Astros have contacted Zaun's agent, he represents himself.

I think Zaun has an agent now. After being made a fool in negotiations and seeing how difficult it really was(before last contract), he went and got an agent. Though I'm not 100% sure.

David Ross is almost a Brave, according to KR on MSN Sports.

What happened to Clint Sammons?
I really hope the Astros don't sign Paul Bako, he is horrible. I would rather have David Ross than Zaun, but either is 100x better than J.R. Towles.
