sorry Roy no playoffs for you

Silly Roy Oswalt. Don't you know that $10M today is worth the same in 3 years? Oh wait...
Posted by: Victor | December 13, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Too bad the Mets can't trade any1 for Roy and/or Carlos Lee. We could use either one.

Part of me is really glad they're so adamant about payroll, 'cause it'll keep the Carl Pavano-like mistakes to a minimum... But that's not the part of me that's a diehard Astros fan...
That part of me is frequently disappointed.

I can't blame him for trying to free up some money so his team can be more competitive. But they would have to do alot more than restructure his contract to acquire his friend Peavy. Like orchestrate a 17 team trade with Towers.

Thank you Drayton, you made my decision to cancel my season tickets for next season to look so much smarter...

"In their bid to cut payroll, the Houston Astros are making it clear that Miguel Tejada and Ty Wigginton are both available, the Globe's Tony Massarotti reported. The Astros have to cut payroll, making Tejada the more efficient choice, but Houston also believes that the only way to trade Tejada is to take salary back in return."

The Astros will be lucky if they win 75 games next season. I won't be giving a dime to the Astros until Drayton is not the owner any more. Nothing like an owner killing the team's chances of making the playoffs in December lol.

They might as well trade Carlos Lee to an AL team (so he can DH), trade Oswalt, Tejada, Berkman. Seriously, if they can't commit money to surround these guys with talent, they need to get bundles of cheap talent for them that they can build around.

Valverde should be the first one traded right after Fuentes signs... what good is a closer on a terrible team?

Is Tejada their 3B now? Everett back at SS? It would make sense, but is Drayton that smart?

I wonder how long it is going to be before Oswalt requests a trade... I love Berkman and Oswalt, but they would bring back good talent and I would be pissed if I were them and not bringing in any talent around them. I am fed up with Drayton as the owner. Letting Wigginton become a FA was the nail in the coffin. I will still be going to games because of my dad's season tickets, but I won't be buying any drinks or beers there. Ill be drinking before and won't spend a dime. I am almost embarrassed to wear my Astro's hats anywhere now.
Hello Pirates we will be fighting with y'all for the first pick in the draft next year!
maximumpotential- Everett already signed with the Tigers.

oops, thx. Still move Tejada to 3B and find a Everett-like SS. Alberto Gonzalez from Wash?

Right now I don't even care. I found out about that crap with Ty last night and had to take a shot of Patron right away to keep me from hitting something. I am so tired of Drayton's BS.

I'm all up for rebuilding.
Drayton McClane sell the damn team. You're moron.

Cardinals should revisit the Valverde talks. I bet an offer of Chris Perez and David Freese would do it.
Astros save money and fill two roster spots; Cardinals get the veteran closer they seek. Even the Cardinals save money, if the alternative is handing Fuentes a 3 year/$34M deal.

If any franchise in baseball was ripe for a total rebuild, it's the Astros.
1. No chance at competing any time soon. Check.
2. Cutting payroll when they have obvious holes. Check.
3. A decimated farm system. Check.
4. A few valuable trade properties. Check.
Deal Oswalt, Berkman, Lee, Tejada, and Valverde for prospects. Get bad enough to have the #1 overall pick in the 2010 draft. Take the payroll savings and spend big internationally and in the 2009 draft, grabbing guys who fall due to "signability".
Once the farm system is back to respectability (2010 maybe), then start loosening the purse strings a bit.

Devlsh,
We would never trade Valverde to the Cardinals. When players leave the Astros, we don't want anything in return.
Posted by: astrosfan76 | December 13, 2008 at 07:36 PM
Devlsh,
The Cards want a closer to help allow Perez to mature, not to get rid of him period... The idea is groom Perez as the closer of the future, while slowly bringing him into the role of the closer of now as well.

Oswalt needs to be moved for his sake. He is obviously doing his part in trying to win and it seems that the Houston organization is not cooperating. Oswalt is a great pitcher and I feel bad that he isn't on a team that is willing to make moves in order to improve. TRADE HIM!
Posted by: Tough | December 14, 2008 at 12:20 AM
I agree with most of you on this one: let Oswalt go somewhere where he can win. He's pretty set on retiring when his current contract ends, so do the guy a favor and (assuming he'll waive his NTC) let him go. He's a World Series calibre pitcher, and - let's face it - the 'Stros aren't going to the WS anytime soon. The Astros owe it to him with all the BS he's put up with to let him go to a team that can compete.
I'm tired of hearing about this "economic uncertainty" bull. Every other team seems to be making moves, what is it that puts the Lastros is such a tough spot?
