« Rays Willing To Trade Bartlett? | Main | Orioles' Talks With Markakis On Hold »
According to a press release, the Astros signed Doug Brocail to a one-year deal today. He'll get $2.5MM plus incentives in '09 and there's a club option for $2.85MM plus incentives for '10 with a $250K buyout. The Astros declined Brocail's $3.25MM '09 option in October and did not offer him arbitration yesterday.
Brocail, 41, posted a 3.93 ERA in 68.2 innings this year. His strikeout rate was up significantly from '07. He struggled in July and August, but pitched well in September.

Good low risk signing, and should be a solid bullpen.

On a one year deal, why not. I guess the downside is the Astros are going to have half of their bullpen back up for free agency next year though.

Basically a no brainer for the Astros, there really isn't much downside to this deal. I guess I'll say good job not screwing up, Ed Wade.

Brocail was crazy good last year! he was also battling some sort of cancer if i recall.

Not really a good business move for Brocail. They didn't offer him Arb., so the market for him should have been stronger than otherwise.

TheTEEJ - I think you might be thinking of the angioplasty he had in 2006.

I don't really like the move - they should have just offered Brocail, a type A free agent, arbitration and taken the picks. The Astros are really a ways from being a WS contender (their 2008 pythagorean record was 77 - 84), and moves like this and the Hampton signing - while certainly low-risk - are clear evidence that Houston management/ownership just don't get it. It's time to destroy and rebuild.

Well the thing is Brocail would have accepted the Arb and more then likely would have made more money through Arb, since he wanted to stay in Houston.
The Astros are not going to rebuild, Hampton isn't going to be our number 2, he will be a number 4-5 and that is what he would be if he had signed with the Braves. And if the Astros do trade Val or Wiggy or both I think the Astros would get good prospects in return, like a Scott Lewis from the Indians.

Chris W, what if they offered Brocail arbitration and he accepted? They would "lose the picks" and be forced to pay him more than he is getting paid now. Yesterday, I was annoyed they didn't offer him arbitration but now I see they probably already had something worked out.
This is a pretty good move for the Astros. Just be glad they finally got rid of Timmy "The Toad" Purpura; he would have offered Brocail a 3 year guaranteed contract. Wade may be a crappy GM in some respects, but he's not the worst GM the Astros have ever had and he's made some decent moves like this.

I dont think Wade is that bad. Obviously he is working with a restricted payroll, a crappy owner and a depleted farm system. He has done pretty good in terms of whats available. Chris- I think you are right about the angio. I could of swore one guy on the Stros was battling some sort of cancer while still pitching. It might of been that his wife had it or something. Anyhow, good job on the signing now go get us some Peavy (yeah right)
