« Rockies Rumors: Fuentes, Embree, Taveras | Main | Arbitration Rumors »
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, at least four teams are interested in free agent infielder Mark Loretta. Among them: the Phillies, Pirates, Diamondbacks, and Dodgers. The Pirates have talked to Loretta's agent twice.
Crasnick figures the Astros won't offer Loretta arbitration this time around; he accepted last year. He lost his case but still earned $2.75MM. The 37 year-old hit .280/.350/.383 in 297 plate appearances while playing a below-average second base and an above-average third base.

I'd like to see the Pirates get him. They could probably use him the most.

Seems like a better player than Garret Atkins.

the dodgers would probably sign him to start at 2nd and move dewitt back to 3rd

Like to hear more from Astro fans that saw him everyday, but it seems that a lot of teams would be interested in a utility/platoon guy who can still put up numbers like 280/350.
There are a lot worse options getting paid a lot more than 3 million bucks out there.

I think the Astros are probably going to offer Loretta arbitration. If he excepts again they will probably unload Wigginton and us Loretta as the everyday third baseman. That way the Astros get the salary dump they are looking for and still have a productive hitter at third.
Plus if he declines the offer the Astros get a compensation pick for him because he is a type b free agent.

I think the Astros will offer Loretta arbitration, because if so many teams are interested, there is a high likelyhood that he will reject and since the astros lost both david newhan, tomas perez and jose castillo. If they dont keep him, they loose vet off the bench and then probably will have to pick someone off the rule 5 draft for the bench or bring up saccommano from AAA even tho they just took him off the 40 man roster so someone else might grab him.

I think I'd rather see the Dodgers target Ray Durham. Seems more like a Ned Colletti pick anyway.

Did you really just say that Mark Loretta is better than Garret Atkins???

Loretta is a great util man off the bench but I really can't see him being more than a mentor to young players and a bench guy for ANY team. He is decent at offense and decent at defense but nothing more. Really like the guy though.

I dont want to see Andy Laroche as the only option at third for the Pirates. Sign him but I hope the front office dont expect season ticket sales to sky rocket!
A big name pitcher would help that.

I agree that a big name pitcher would definitely help ticket sales (even if it is someone like Pedro Marinez). However, even without Loretta (I do wish we would sign him) I will disagree that Andy Laroache is the only option at 3B as Neil Walker could be ready for the MLB very soon.

You're kidding... right???

I really can't see the Phillies interested in Loretta. They have better options at 2nd with Jason Donald until Utley is fult healed. The only other condition to sign him would be if he is willing to give left field a shot.He would be a cheap short term alternative.

Would rater see the Bucs get Grudz or Durham.

We can only hope Walker is ready but his low AVG in Indy scares me.
