« Twins Interested In Kawakami, Uehara | Main | Dodgers Rumors: Wolf, Johnson, Strickland »
On this date 17 years ago, the Blue Jays signed 40-year old future Hall of Famer Dave Winfield to a one-year, $2.3MM contract. The signing was a good one as Winfield helped the Jays to their first title in 1992. That year he hit .290-26-108 with a .377 OBP and 137 OPS+, including what would prove to be the series-winning two-run double in the top of the 11th of game 6 of the World Series. Did I mention he was 40? With this year's crop of free agents playing euchre as they patiently wait for Mark Teixeira to make up his mind, let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere...

I had heard before the Teixiera biddings that the Red Sox were going to wait on Holliday next season. However, I would HIGHLY prefer Teixeira over holliday as of right now. Holliday played at coors field where the ball travels very well. Lets see how he does in oakland before we hop on the lets sign Matt train.

Waiting a year and signing Holliday to replace Bay doesnt improve the lineup. It just replaces one OK power hitter with another.

exactly TJ. I'd even go as far to say i'd hold onto bay (at this point in time). will be more cost effective.

i think theo loves jason too much to let me walk after a year and a half

I think Bay did great after the trade and would like to see a full season of him, but I tend to agree, I would like to see Bay re-signed to remain in LF.
What we need is a power hitting corner IF, Youk can play which ever, but we need to upgrade on Lowell, its easy to love Lowell, but he is old and will get worse as each season moves on.

Is there a website that keeps stats on leads blown by the bullpen. Maybe the Braves should focus on having a dominant bullpen, as I think Smoltz (if he comes back, looks good considering we have to spend some of the money, JJ, JV, and even Campillo can put sub 4 ERA.

Add RJ and trade Sanchez / Prospect for a bat like Prince and we can win the West.

Why replace Jason Bay with Matt Holliday? Pretty much the same player.

TJ: Lowell is 34... thats not "old" for 3b. arod signed thru 42.

please let the pirates resign jason bay after 2009 , that trade would have officially been perfect this year

Im glad I'm not the only one that thinks Hendry has done NOTHING to make the Cubs better

Mike Lowell is no Alex Rodriguez.... even more so considering Lowell has had issues this season with his hip

"The Bottom Line wonders if the Red Sox are better off waiting a year and going after Matt Holliday to replace Jason Bay."
Clearly they have not seen Holiday's stats away from Coors...

In the Braves article Mark Bowman advocated avoiding signing Burrell or Dunn to 3 year contracts because it will block the path for one of our young OF prospects...
I would prefer to sign one of them for a reasonable amount of money, and then trade them for some prospects. Even if we have to eat some of their contract for the final year, who cares?
Remember when a little shortstop named Edgar Renteria was blocking the path of Yunel Escobar? Escobar was signed to what a lot of people would consider above league average for a shortstop of his caliber and we were still able to flip him for a stud OF prospect and probably the best pitcher on our team.
Stop trading away prospects when you could sign a player who will put up the same numbers for the same amount of money! (Of course I'm talking about trading for Javy Vasquez when we could have signed Jon Garland for the same money.)
