Blue Jays Interested In Furcal

According to Yahoo's Tim Brown, the Blue Jays feel they may be able to sign Rafael Furcal with the money they intended for A.J. Burnett.  The Jays would obviously have to top Oakland's four-year, $35-40MM offer.

I knew the Jays had to be one of the "mystery" teams reported last night...

Jays are in dire need of a SS. They don't even have a SS prospect that could be ready in 2-3 years time.

4/44 should get it done.

Tim,

Would the Jays HAVE to top the A's offer? I thought the A's effectively removed the offer.

What happened to the Blue Jays being maxed out on payroll?

"What happened to the Blue Jays being maxed out on payroll?"

With Burnett off the books and the likely non-tendering of Frasor and Tallet, payroll looks to be around 78m, and was 20m higher than that last year. So unless the Jays are using the CDN dollar's drop as a reason to keep payroll stagnant (which 78m would actually be, since the dollar is down the same 20%), they have money to spend.

That being said, Furcal would basically mean they are blowing it all on one player, and that simply isn't going to happen. They would still need a DH (don't want to start the season with Snider) and some SP options.

"They don't even have a SS prospect that could be ready in 2-3 years time."

Justin Jackson gets raving reviews for his defense at SS, and his bat shows a lot of potential. Next year at this time he will most likely be Toronto's #1 prospect with Cecil and Snider already having made their impacts at the big league level. A 3 year deal for Furcal would give Jackson one full season each at A+, AA, and AAA.

i could see this not being true. no offense to tim brown, but i learned in general that Yahoo has not been the the most reliable source.

jacksons bat leaves a lot to be desired, as of now hes john mac which isnt enough

John Sickels disagrees:

5) Justin Jackson, SS, Grade B-: A high grade you might think. But I buy into the projection and I think he will ultimately hit.

Most other prospect reviews have him that well received or better.

Not to be a sucker for this report, but IF true I could see it. While the Jays might like a DH, they might like to go ahead and run with Snider...it's hard to say. On the other hand, there's no "top shelf" option at SS in the system for at least 2 years and likely more.

Plus, they need for a true leadoff hitter is dramatic. So I could see a SS being their big ticket buy.

As for the debate over money, I'd be pleased with this signing for at least one reason - so that the doomsayers could quit wringing their hands about the money issue in Toronto.
