He's a good benchman. He can play OF and 1B. I like this signing.

Very solid signing. He will be used mainly as a PH.
His line last year as a PH: .316/.473/.526 with 3HR in 57AB.

yea he is a good 9th inning pinch hitter with no speed and no stick. ie: "o look here comes k-rod, lets send up norton to strike out..ect"
Posted by: Mark Twine | December 19, 2008 at 03:48 PM
scratch that, i mean no glove
Posted by: Mark Twine | December 19, 2008 at 03:50 PM
anyways, joey gathright would have been a steal for 800k this year over norton

"yea he is a good 9th inning pinch hitter with no speed and no stick. ie: "o look here comes k-rod, lets send up norton to strike out..ect""
K-rod blew a ton of saves last year and he's not that great. He's an excellent bench player. One of the best pinch-hitters in the NL if not THE best, switch hits, and can play OF or 1B in a pinch. He changed a few games with his bat this year and he'll contine to do so. Great signing. The .316/.473/.526 line as a pinch hitter speaks for itself.

"anyways, joey gathright would have been a steal for 800k this year over norton"
Greg Norton = pinch hitter, not defensive substitution.
Gathright = defensive substitution, not pinch hitter.
Huge difference among bench players.

Solid signing. Norton was a fine pinch hitter/utility guy last season. Being a switch hitter makes him that much better.
Posted by: FineHamAbounds | December 19, 2008 at 03:58 PM
"This past season, Norton led all Major Leaguers with three pinch-hit homers, 18 pinch-hit RBIs, and 17 pinch-hit walks. His 18 pinch-hits ranked second behind Philadelphia's Greg Dobbs...Since the start of the 2001 season, he leads all Major Leaguers with 13 pinch-hit homers and 64 pinch-hit RBIs."
Absolutely solid signing.

speed, age, defense over just 3 at bats a week. gathright>norton
Posted by: Mark Twine | December 19, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Gregor Blanco has all of that for much cheaper. Norton is intended as a HITTER, not a defensive replacement.
Posted by: daslied | December 19, 2008 at 04:11 PM
Josh Anderson has similar speed, is younger, and plays comparable, if not better defense. He's already on the Braves. Therefore, for the Braves, Norton > Gathright...
Make sense?

Someone finally signed with the Braves...Yeah!!!
Posted by: njbraves | December 19, 2008 at 04:18 PM
Gregor's actually surprisingly mediocre defensively and he doesn't steal a ton of bases. As a hitter though, Gathright is just a poor man's Gregor Blanco.
Posted by: nixa37 | December 19, 2008 at 04:19 PM
nixa37 and daslied very nice insight, yall win this round, we are all braves fans though. lets give em hell next year!!!
Posted by: Mark Twine | December 19, 2008 at 04:24 PM
Yeah, you're right. He's still a better option than Gathright, though. And I totally forgot about Anderson...
Posted by: daslied | December 19, 2008 at 04:32 PM
Wow a poster that's actually willing to change his mind when presented with a reasonable argument? With the way things have gone on this site lately I didn't thing such a thing still existed.
Posted by: nixa37 | December 19, 2008 at 04:37 PM
Hey nixa37 (4:37),
The Braves actually signed a free agent, didn't they? So miracles can happen!
Posted by: ink-stained scribe | December 19, 2008 at 04:56 PM
Norton was intended to be used only as a pinch-hitter last year. He's an excellent pinch-hitter and can come off the bench and change the game. Like I said, his / stats in that role speak for themselves. He makes any national league team more complete and better. Good for the Braves. I always get excited when I see Greg Norton with a bat in the on-deck circle in close and late situations.

"K-rod blew a ton of saves last year and he's not that great."
Not by a percentage of his chances.
Posted by: AA | December 19, 2008 at 05:23 PM
Norton is an awesome player to have. Occaisional power, very patient. Just always seems to do what he's asked.
And lets not forget his two web gems in LF. He does the job in the field aswell.
A proffesional. I'm very happy to have him back because he's a rare commodity.
Posted by: Apollo'08 | December 19, 2008 at 05:47 PM
62 of 69 opps
That's almost 90 percent of his save opps were not BlowN.
Posted by: beastOftheEast | December 19, 2008 at 05:48 PM
Mike gonzalez went 14 of 16 which is 87.5 of his saves which isn't bad but krod had so many chances to blow more saves but he still was at 89 percent.
Posted by: beastOftheEast | December 19, 2008 at 05:52 PM
If krod goes 40 of 45 in saves or 39 of 44 I be a happy met fan.
Posted by: beastOftheEast | December 19, 2008 at 05:58 PM
You can't argue that KRod is incredibly ineffecient in nailing down games.
I'm really looking forward to seeing if the Braves can do anything with him. They've always done a pretty good job against closers.
Posted by: Apollo'08 | December 19, 2008 at 06:02 PM
I'll tell you one thing about K-Rod he doesn't blow away people anymore like he used to. Now its mainly his curve.
Posted by: Cyyoung | December 19, 2008 at 06:15 PM
I'd love to agree the braves are good against closers, but honestly they're just good at getting the tying runner into scoring position and then blowing it. Guys like Norton that can come up in the clutch will help prevent that.
Posted by: FiNch | December 19, 2008 at 06:24 PM
Cy young yea santana didn't hit 95 at all last year and he had a era around 2.50
Posted by: beastOftheEast | December 19, 2008 at 06:26 PM
People of the nl east don't know how to face krod like lidge last year. Krod is better than lidge and krod promise to him 96 again so doubters will have to wait and be blown away
Posted by: beastOftheEast | December 19, 2008 at 06:30 PM
Greg hit .262/.373/.439
Posted by: Showtime35 | December 19, 2008 at 06:37 PM
"I'll tell you one thing about K-Rod he doesn't blow away people anymore like he used to. Now its mainly his curve."
His out pitch has always been mainly his curve. His fastball was always a show me pitch. In fact, I think this year is the first time I actually saw him trying to throw strikes with it. It also appears that no one outside the Angels and Mets realize just how good his change is.
Posted by: AA | December 19, 2008 at 06:43 PM
mark twine, norton is the best thing since Julio Jones!!!!!
Posted by: Buzz Meat | December 19, 2008 at 07:01 PM
Atlanta already has 3 Joey Gaithright why would they need a 4 th?
Posted by: cardfan61 | December 19, 2008 at 09:06 PM
Horrible. Greg Norton is probably my least favorite Brave of all time. With the large exception of Corky Miller...and Bob Wickman.
Posted by: Roberty | December 19, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Roberty...need I mention Dan Kolb?
Posted by: fuzbal | December 19, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Seriously, I like this signing a lot. Norton plays hard and is a pretty good PH. However, with the Braves' luck this offseason, I'm afraid Norton gets hit by a meteorite during spring training.

You clearly started watching baseball in 2007.
