« Red Sox Rumors: Bloomquist, Lugo, Varitek | Main | Corey Patterson No Longer With Boras »
According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Brewers signed reliever Todd Coffey to a one-year, $800K deal with $200K in incentives. He had been arbitration-eligible. Coffey, 28, tossed 7.1 scoreless innings after joining the Brewers after they claimed him off waivers in September. The Brewers added Jorge Julio to their pen a few days ago.
Renck also reports the Rockies signed catcher Paul Phillips to a minor league deal to add depth.

Doug Melvin's kryptonite...building a bullpen.

Todd Coffey was huge for the Brewers down the stretch. It is a low risk signing for only 1 year. Coffey pitched a lot of late innings, it would have been nice to have him for the playoffs, but we couldn't because he was acquired after august 1st.

There's two ways to classify a signing as "low-risk"
1. Low dollar value
2. If the team doesn't plan on relying too much on them.
The latter is the problem here. There's no question the Brewers will have Coffey pitching in big spots early next season and he will likely do awful.

Also classify low risk as only 1 year, if it doesn't work out then they don't retain him. And your basis for him doing aweful is.....

That he isn't very good at baseball.

As a Brewer fan, I say "good" to every move the Cubs make. Cause it makes it funnier when they get swept the next year.

Yeah, that World series they won in milwaukee was just awesome...let alone the division championships.
You guys are going to be great without CC and Sheets...

-this is a good signing, because coffey was great down the stretch for the brewers last year, and we'll see how he does for a whole season, but its only 800K too, so its not bad.
-what are you arrogant cubs fans going to say if CC does resign?
-what are you arrogant cubs fans going to say when you dont trade for peavy?
-what are you arrogant cubs fans going to say when kevin gregg is blowing games for you while kerry wood will be saving games for another club?
-what are you arrogant cubs fans going to say when you guys choke, AGAIN!

Sorry, but I cannot take the world series taunt seriously from a Cubs fan. I would rather not have a championship at all in a 40 year history than not have one since 1908.
Oh and I'm sure the Cubs will be great with whatever rotation they end up with. And by great I mean, win 95-100 games and then get swept out in the first round...again.
Brewers 2007 playoff wins: 1
Cubs 2007 playoff wins: 0
And that's WITH your ridiculous payroll. Congrats, you're the laughing stock of sports.
