Brian Fuentes Rumors: Tuesday

10:59pm: Rosenthal says the Nationals are also in the mix for Fuentes.  His source says they want to sign Mark Teixeira or Manny Ramirez, plus Fuentes.  Nationals GM Jim Bowden said on November 12th, "We are not pursuing Manny Ramirez."

9:49pm: Rosenthal says the Cardinals, Angels, and Tigers are showing interest in Fuentes.

8:29pm: Doug Melvin said he met with the agents for Fuentes, Trevor Hoffman, and Kerry Wood today.

8:05pm: John Perrotto expects the Brewers to move to the front for Fuentes.  I imagine they might try to sort out the Sabathia situation first.

5:46pm: According to Derrick Goold and Joe Strauss, the Cardinals have engaged in conversation with Brian Fuentes' agents. With K-Rod setting a lower-than-expected ceiling to the closer market, Fuentes could enter the Cards' price range.  GM John Mozeliak said on 1380AM today that he's yet to dig his heels in on Fuentes though.  You have to wonder if the Tigers will take a serious look.

While it would be a big signing for the Cardinals. I would prefer to spend the money elsewhere. I'd say trade for someone like B.J. Ryan.

Trade prospects for a closer that might cost the same in terms of money like Fuentes. You still spending the money and giving up players.

I wish they would use the money on starting pitching and give Chris Perez the closer job.

Someone tell Melvin it looks like he is too little too late for Woody.

Ah yeah, Kerry Wood is signing with the Indians. K-ROD signed with the Mets. Now we have to find a closer. Although I still like the idea of McClung.

Anyways, I expect a huge push for the closer market in the next couple of days now that Wood and KRod have set the mark.

I really think the Brewers would be best suited moving Suppan to the pen as a long man. Yes, he gets paid much much more than McClung and Bush. He's also the inferior starter. Treat Soup like a lost cause and stick him in the pen. McClung has outperformed Suppan in his starts, let him into the rotation. If someone falters/gets hurt, let Suppan rejoin the rotation.

Although if that doesn't happen, let McClung try out for set up man/closer spot.

I can see the Angels making a strong push for Fuentes. They have plenty of available money for him and plenty of available spots for him in their bullpen.

I hope the Angels don't get all giddy about Furntes. They need to focus on Tex and make sure they get that deal done. Angels can consider using the kid Arredondo with help from Sheilds.

I really think that Trevor Hoffman is flying way under the radar here. He had a rough start to 2008 with 7 ER in April and 2 blown saves (6.52 ERA) but then gave up just 12 ER over the remaining 5 months of the season and only 2 blown saves over that time as well (3.02 ERA). On top of that, in his 45.1 IP he struck out 46 while walking just 9 and posting a WHIP of just 1.04 while the opposition hit just .224 off him.

His age is becoming an issue but I would doubt that he's looking for anything beyond 2 years/$10M-$12M. A team like the Brewers, who lost their veteran relievers in Torres, Gagne, Mota and Shouse, could really use Hoffman's experience at the end of games.

With guys like Fuentes and Wood, you don't know what you're going to get. With Hoffman, you have a pretty good idea of what he's going to give you and he rarely disappoints.

Whichever team signs him, in my opinion, is going to get the steal of the offseason as far as bullpen arms go.

That's a good point about Hoffman, maybe the Angels could offer him 1 year deal to give Arredondo one more year of development before handing him the closers job. Well see what happens.

if the price continues to drop, I bet the Rockies get back into the discussion. When they planned to let him go, his expected price was what K-Rod got. If the price is much less than that expected price, they may decide they can afford him. That would make for a great pen, but would also allow them to package Street with Atkins to help the rotation.
