« Padres Sign Jody Gerut | Main | Furcal Signs With Dodgers »
According to Frank Cusumano of Channel 5 in St. Louis, the Cardinals are "turning the page but not shutting the door" on Brian Fuentes after making an aggressive offer and apparently not hearing back. It's been suggested that Fuentes wants three years at more than $10MM per. He's seemingly waiting on Mark Teixeira to see if the Angels will have the available funds to sign him.

Good, just give the ball to Perez or Motte and go get a starter.

Good riddance. Chris Perez and Jason Motte are practically free.

Go ahead get greedy. Watch the Angels sign Tex and the Cards pass. Where do you go then Fuentes?

if the Cardinals are passing on Fuentes, who wants more than $10 mil a season ..would they be interested in trading for BJ Ryan who will make $10 mil right on in each of the next 2 seasons?
i would think with all the problems the Cardinals had closing games this past season they would want a sure thing from their closer.

Are the Brewers still in contention for him?
Posted by: pskip13 | December 19, 2008 at 08:04 PM
Personally, as a cub fan, I would like for either milwaukee or st louis to give him 10 million a year. No reliever is worth it...and I was glad the Cubs didn't give kerry 10 mil a year either. I know some believe otherwise, but i'd rather have 10% of the salary of my opponents at that level.

Im with you specialFNK, but his price is REALLY gonna have to drop to come into DD's apparent closer price range. If Tex signs with the angels Fuentes will go back to the Cards and sign for a little less then he wants, and if Tex signs elsewhere then Fuentes goes to the angels.

that is almost what brad lidge got. fuentes isnt going to get close to 3 years 10 mill+

I cant beleive that the agents for Fuentes didnt even contact the Cards to respond to their offer. They must be the same agents as Furcal.

I wanted the guy on the Cards but I think it was ridiculous that Kerry Wood got all that money, he always gets hurt and he will again, I'm sure. If he's gonna be a greedy prick, just go after Trevor Hoffman and Randy Johnson or another starter, the Cards are afraid of being burned but they may get us into the playoffs.

Cards are smart - by the end of Jan. Fuentes will be begging for a job - he's not going to get 10m+. Go get Juan Cruz and Brad Penney and save 3m.
Posted by: rockford | December 20, 2008 at 08:03 AM
I agree with rockford...go get Penhy and maybe a Cruz type and call it good. Between Perez/Motte/Kinney we will get the job done. The majority of the blown saves was by Izzy and Frtanklin last year i believe. Most of the time signing closers do not pay off. Esp. with the prices skyrocketing.

Penny not penhy
Franklin not frtanklin

anyone think there's a chance that Wainwright goes back to the closer roll if Perez and Motte can't get the job done?
Posted by: GoCards5 | December 20, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Wainwright won't go back to closing. He is a stud when he starts. He's undoubtedly, when healthy, the ace of that staff.

"anyone think there's a chance that Wainwright goes back to the closer roll if Perez and Motte can't get the job done?"
No. Just no.
The Cardinals need starting pitching more than they need a closer. Wainwright is the Cards' best starter. He'll stay in the rotation. I could see Piniero moved to the pen, but not Waino.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 20, 2008 at 12:18 PM
If the Angels get Teixeira, it is almost assumed that the Cardinals get Fuentes. I don't see the Tigers entering the bidding, and the Brewers need to fix their starting pitching before fixing the pen. Fuentes' asking price drops drastically if the Angels are out of the bidding, probably to the 2/18.
So every Cardinal fan should hope that the Angels don't get Teixeira, since Fuentes is a stupid signing for the Cards.

Wainwright will go back to the closer role.....when pigs fly and hell freezes over... why the hell do people want to move our best starter out of the rotation? That's just stupid. No way do you give your BEST pitcher LESS innings!
