Correia, Padres Reach Minor-League Deal

Kevin Correia will compete for a starting job with the San Diego Padres, Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes.

Correia, a righty, was previously with the San Francisco Giants. He agreed to terms on a minor-league contact with an invitation to spring training. If he makes the 25-man roster, Correia could earn $750,000, according to his agent. Krasovic notes that Correia is from San Diego.

Hey, a minor league "contact"?

Pencil him into the #4 hole of the rotation, ahead of Cha Baek. Now, who'll be the #3 between these two chumps and Peavy/Young...

I think the Padres are going to let a whole bunch of guys try and win that last 2/3 rotation spots in spring training. I think Peavy and Young are locks, with Baek, getting strong consideration. Then look for guys like Geer/LeBlanc/Inman/Garrison/Buschmann/Faris along with maybe a couple more Correia like players competing for it. I doubt many of them make it, but they have little reason to make a massive rotation upgrade unless they actually trade Peavy.

Thumper, if healthy, the previous rumors of Mark Mulder or Prior make sense for that third slot.

Thats true as well. Its basically going to be a rag tag group behind Peavy/Young, which I can handle for the short term. I want to see them rebuild, so we shall see what happens. In that spirit I hope they give the young arms a chance to prove themselves, and see what they have.

Garrison is out till june and will start in AA. I wouldn't expect him till middle of '10.

Inman is too young and needs more time developing a secondary out pitch. I wouldn't expect him till sept. call ups.

I could see a Peavy, Young, Baek, Correia and Geer (if he doesn't need TJ). Burke will be the 6th man and LeBlanc will start out at AAA again. And I could see Prior signing again.

Mat Latos will start off in AA after a successful '08 in Low & High A. He could fly through the system if things go right... hopefully by the time they're ready to trade Peavy.

its a great move for the Padres to sign Kevin Corredia!! He could possibly be a soild number 4 starter but they should also sign another free agent pitcher to a minor league deal like say Mark Prior and Livan Hernandez and/or maybe trade Giles for a shortstop and a young prospect pitcher

WestCoastBias,
I totally agree with the last 2 of ur comment! It is true that there was a rumor that the padres eyeing 2 pitchers Mark Prior and Mark Mulder to sign a minor league deal and also Mat Latos is the best pitching prospect in their system he has the stuffs to be a number 1,2 and 3 starter

yeah the padres can have'm!!!
That wonderful 3-8 with a bloated 6.05 ERA... And I was hoping last year at the trade deadline we coulda swapped him out for a dozen game balls.
