« Mets Offer Arb To Perez, No Others | Main | Mariners Make Free Agent Offer »
8:42pm: Towers gave Tom Krasovic a Peavy update. Towers believes that the Braves' unwillingness to grant Peavy a no-trade clause remains on obstacle in that potential match. Plus, a Krasovic source wonders whether Peavy would even OK a trade to Atlanta.
Krasovic adds that the Cubs and Padres discussed a 5-for-1 deal, where the Orioles would be involved to route more pitching to San Diego. However, Towers noted the Cubs' current payroll concerns.
10:35am: Murray Chass snagged a good quote from Padres GM Kevin Towers regarding the Jake Peavy trade talks:
"I would say the Cubs are still in it. Lou said they’re not in it, but their general manager says they’re in it. The Dodgers have bigger fish to fry. That’s not to say they might not circle back later in the winter. Our primary goal is to trade Peavy."
One Cubs source spoke of a "two-year window to win," according to Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune. Chass quotes Towers as seeking established players back for Peavy, which is why the Cubs would need to get a third team involved. Van Dyck says the Cubs hope to hang on to Mike Fontenot and Sean Marshall.

Roguesaw thanks for that last post, its funny to see alot of the top prospects that teams refuse to trade that never amount to anything.

"I could see someone like Jackson being traded"
I'm a big fan of Jackson. He may not be amazing, but he sure is a winner.

I am also a fan of Jackson. He sure did well in his first year. Man, the Cubs could sure use some good pitching prospects...he may be their best hope as of right now. Cashner is good too, but I haven't figured out if he will be able to be anything but a bullpen arm.

MM is certainly an accepted abbreviation for million in finance. Maybe be didn't capitalize it, but if that's really the issue, come on...

RogueSaw-
Thanks for making my point for me! And you're right, I never said he'd be anything more than a quality No. 3. BA's top 100 or not, Olson was fairly well regarded.
nixa- talk to me when Rohrbaugh or Locke even sniff the top 100...or at least the bigs. Olson DID dip out of the Birds' top 10 prior to the 2008 season, but then, that seems to be a habit of BA- to drop guys once they've seen big league service time and get knocked around a little. I said myself that Olson struggled 'mightily' over the course of his rookie year, but also indicated why I think he can bounce back nicely. More (most?) importantly, it seems KEVIN TOWERS agrees. Not saying that means the world, but for THIS TRADE, it certainly carries weight.
RogueSaw- back to you; I was impressed that you at least admitted your bias (something nixa poorly conceals) without losing all objectivity. My lone problem with your post... You guessed it:
'and i made multiple posts becuase i hate long ones. eyes get sore readingthem'
As a somewhat...loquacious person, I'm hurt (LOL)! Seriously, though, what does it say about our current culture when we need our information in bite size pieces; ready-made for consumption by an attention deficient world. OK, off my soap box!
Oh...no one had any opinion re: my O's/Pads/Cubs trade proposal? Not even to call me an idiot (setting myself up there)? C'mon!

I read the first couple of posts and made myself sick. I cannot beleive how many of you are going to look down on the Braves for not making this trade yet. I will explain to all of you people why this hasn't happened yet.
The Padres wanted a trade that looks like Hanson, Gorkys Hernandez, Flowers,Schafer, and JoJo Reyes (or Charlie Morton) for Peavy. These are among the Braves top prospects. Simply put, the Padres want to trade Peavy, but they don't. They are asking too much for him, and until the price is reduced, he will reamain a Padre. However, don't count out the Padres lowering his price around Winter, and then expect him to get moved, ultimately to the Braves. They are the only team that has enough prospects to get it done.

you mean this one?
San Diego gets: Jeff Samardzija, Garrett Olson, Sean Marshall, Felix Pie, Ronnie Cedeno/Mike Fontenot, Hayden Penn/Brad Bergeson, and Kam Mickolio
Chicago gets: Jake Peavy and George Sherrill
Baltimore gets: Josh Vitters and Kyle Blanks
Posted by: roguesaw | December 03, 2008 at 09:34 AM
i dont know if baltimore would give up three young pitchers and a closer for vitters and blanks. i realize those guys have quite a high ceiling. how about olson mickolio and scott? also what would be done to get samardzija to waive his ntc?
Posted by: roguesaw | December 03, 2008 at 09:38 AM
i really think we are looking more at baltimore making a swap with the cubs, olson for pie or something like it, and then where the cubs go from there is between san diego and them. i dont see baltimore playing a huge role in a peavy deal.
