Dodgers Rumors: Wolf, Johnson, Strickland

Diamond Leung of the Riverside Press-Enterprise has some info on the Dodgers.

  • Randy Wolf would be open to playing for the Dodgers again, which doesn't come as much of a surprise.  They have not made an offer though.  Wolf is said to be looking for three years and $30MM.
  • Randy Johnson has a few offers in hand, but not from the Dodgers...yet.
  • The Dodgers signed reliever Scott Strickland to a minor league deal.

Wolf at $10M per? Keep dreaming wolfie.

Instead of giving Randy Wolf 3 years/30 mil, why not just give Jason Marquis 1 year 5-6 mil to get similar production.

Wolf is really trying to bank on those 70 good IP he threw at the end of last season. He'll be this year's Carlos Silva if someone gives him that contract....a contract you know will be terrible the minute he signs his name.

"why not just give Jason Marquis 1 year 5-6 mil to get similar production."

Because Marquis is awful perhaps?

I like the Strickland deal!

Wolf isn't as bad as Silva. He provides pretty good K rates a decent ERA+. If he stays healthy he is worth every bit of 10 million over 3 years especially as the 4th best pitcher in the Dodgers roto.

Jason Marquis would be in the same role on the Dodgers as he is with the Cubs.

This years Carlos Silva is Jon Garland.

I would take wolfie over marquis any day. with what these players are making 10 mil per seems reasonable for a 4th spot in the rotation.
and i agree about silvia and garland.

"Because Marquis is awful perhaps?"

Marquis is slightly below average, which is where Randy Wolf's skillset resides. Good luck finding league average on a one year 6 million dollar deal on the open market. So like I said, why not just get Jason Marquis for a cheaper, shorter contract?

"I would take wolfie over marquis any day."

Randy Wolf's last 2 years ERA+ 97 and 93 with WHIPS of 1.45 and 1.37...also a big injury risk.

Jason Marquis 101 and 99 with WHIPS of 1.38 and 1.44... virtually no injury risk.

So would you rather have Wolf at a contract twice as big annually and 3 times as long?

"with what these players are making 10 mil per seems reasonable for a 4th spot in the rotation."

Randy Wolf is a 5th starter on a good team and 10 mil is definitely not reasonable for a #4 starter.

We could do better than Marquis with in house options. Marquis is almost an inning eater. He belongs on a team that is desperate for starting pitching. He isn't worth trading anyone for, at least not from the Dodgers anyway.

Marquis pitches to contact. The Dodgers wont be a very good defensive team. Wolf has better strike out rates and would do considerably better in LA than Marquis. I'd ratehr have Wolf than Marquis. I'd rather have Randy Johnson than Wolf...

they are both horrible. But atleast Marquis gives you innings and isn't an injury risk. Wolf had a 4.74 era at Petco Park I would be shocked if anyone gave him more than a 2 year deal worth more than 16 mil

"We're looking at adding Wolf next year at 4 years 44 million."

NedCo

The Cubs wanted to replace Marquis in the rotation within the first few months of his contract...

He is terrible!

Cubs will have to find a sucker and eat salary to dump him...

The idea of paying Randy Wolf nearly as much as Hiroki Kuroda is sickening.

"Because Marquis is awful perhaps?"

Marquis is hardly "awful". He is an okay pitcher who slots as a 4/5 starter who had one REALLY bad season. At least the guy can hit and isn't asking for 3/30

"Marquis pitches to contact. The Dodgers wont be a very good defensive team. Wolf has better strike out rates and would do considerably better in LA than Marquis. I'd ratehr have Wolf than Marquis. I'd rather have Randy Johnson than Wolf..."

Where do you get the idea that the Dodgers' defense wont be any good? Furcal is top notch, Loney is extremely talented, DeWitt is a gifted athlete who is a star defender at 3B and was average at 2B after a mid-season change, and Blake is right around average. Sounds like an above average defense to surround a GBer to me. Derek Lowe didn't seem to mind.

I'll take Randy Johnson on a one-year, incentive laden deal please...
