Dodgers Sign Claudio Vargas

According to Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times, the Dodgers signed pitcher Claudio Vargas to an incentive-laden, one-year deal.  He'll earn $400K and has $1.4MM in incentives.

Vargas, 30, spent 2008 in the Mets' organization.  He pitched 85.3 innings across various levels, dealing with elbow pain at one point.  He'd been released by the Brewers in March.

Interesting. Guy was a league average pitcher not too long ago so I imagine it's a worthwhile risk for both sides. Dodger Stadium and the NL West is a great place to rebuild value. Can't believe I remember this guy coming up as a prospect, I feel old. :(

He has some upside and is worth a flyer...

Better Vargas at $400,000 then Garland at $10 million

It's worth $400,000 just to hear Vin Scully say "Claudio."

Say hello to this year's version of the Dodgers' reclamation project (ie. Chan Ho Park, Jason Johnson, Randy Wolf, Chin-hui Tsao).

Some reclamation projects work out, some don't but not a bad gamble.

For only $400K guaranteed, he could end up a decent 5th starter or middle reliever.

I agree, pitching in the NL West with half your games at Dodger Stadium is a great way to resurrect your value.

I hear Vin chronicling his career now now..."Claudio Vargas, the 30 year old right-hander from Valverde Mao in the Dominican Republic...came up with the then-Montreal Expos, now the Washington Nationals, then played in Arizona, in Milwaukee and with the Mets..." (sigh)

Nice, some depth we may not count on. If he sucks send him to AAA.

Hey, for $400k, you can never have enough live arms to look at in spring training/AA for when injuries arise. Good low risk/high reward signing

If there is one thing Colletti is good at, it is signing pitchers to cheap reclamation deals. The Dodgers don't have a long man, so Vargas makes sense in that role and can potentially start as well.

Dayam! Whatta move! Spending spree is over!

I'll bet McCourt was furious they went above $250K.

It's not necessarily Colletti that's good at this. It seems to be an annual Dodgers tradition. They've done it with Orel Hershiser, Andy Ashby, Omar Daal, Hideo Nomo, Jose Lima from 2000-2004.

Vargas has to get at least the league minimum, which is $400K

A deal that can't hurt us. You can't hate on a deal that wont hurt your team significantly in terms of production or payroll. This guy isn't exactly lights out, and hasn't had a truly good season, but he is only 30, and he could prove worthwhile for our bullpen or add extra competition for the #5 spot in our rotation come Spring Training.

Not too bad.

Oh, DodgersBruin, Hideo Nomo wasn't really a reclamation project, more of a foreign import. Just thought I'd let you know haha.

I think he was talking about the second time. He had 2 excellent seasons before pitching hurt in 2004 and having one of the worst seasons in history.

does this signing mean there's no chance that Anna Benson is this year's Dodger reclamation project. dammit!

Uh, yeah, that was a joke. See, McCourt is really really really cheap and...

It's worth $400,000 just to hear Vin Scully say "Claudio."
